Edison Electric Institute promotes energy efficiency: Consumer Reports Home & Garden Blog

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

So on July 10, the Edison Electric Institute hosted a lunch at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. A six-member panel of EEI representatives addressed journalists to discuss "the effort underway to transform the role that energy efficiency plays within the electric power sector," according to the event program.

The EEI is the association of U.S. shareholder-owned electric companies, and its agenda is to ensure that its members turn a profit.

Tags: action electricity energy efficiency smart meters usa

Posted by: keulenae

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Improvements in energy efficiency over the past three decades have played a key role in limiting global increases in energy use and CO2 emissions. For IEA countries, energy efficiency gains since 1990 have led to annual energy savings of more than 16 EJ in 2005 and 1.3 Gt of avoided CO2 emissions. However, the recent rate of efficiency improvement has been much lower than in the past. The good news is that a large potential remains for further energy and CO2 savings across all sectors. In industry alone, the application of proven technologies and best practices on a global scale could save between 1.9 Gt and 3.2 Gt of CO2 emissions per year. In public power generation, if all countries produced electricity at current best practice levels, CO2 savings would be between 1.8 Gt and 2.5 Gt.

Tags: energy efficiency iea statistics

Posted by: keulenae

Energy efficiency | The elusive negawatt | Economist.com

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

IN WONKISH circles, energy efficiency used to be known as “the fifth fuel”: it can help to satisfy growing demand for energy just as surely as coal, gas, oil or uranium can. But in these environmentally conscious times it has been climbing the rankings. Whereas the burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming, and nuclear plants generate life-threatening waste, the only by-product of energy efficiency is wealth, in the form of lower fuel bills and less spending on power stations, pipelines and so forth. No wonder that wonks now tend to prefer “negawatts” to megawatts as the best method of slaking the world's growing thirst for energy.

Tags: economist energy efficiency negawatt

Posted by: keulenae

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

For me the best energy is the energy that we don’t use. In other words, energy efficiency. There is no cleaner kilowatt/hour than the one we don’t consume. Every cubic meter of gas we don’t burn makes us a cubic meter less dependent on foreign supplies. Every barrel of petrol that we don’t need makes our economy a barrel less vulnerable to volatile oil prices.

Tags: energy efficiency europe piebalgs

Posted by: keulenae

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

In February 2008, the Mexican environment minister announced that 30,000 environmentally-friendly homes are to be built by 2011. The new housing is to be equipped with smart devices like solar water heating, low-energy lighting, high-efficiency appliances and low-flow plumbing fixtures. This pioneering project is to be rolled out in subsequent years as Mexico’s plan for 20 million new homes over the next 20 years starts to unfold, using new building standards to allow energy efficient construction to be applied consistently in each housing development.

Tags: energy efficiency organisation reeep

Posted by: keulenae

Winners and Losers in the EU- Climate Package | Leonardo ENERGY

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Many countries have an intense debate about their opportunities to meet the new obligations in the EU Climate and Energy Package, especially the part that deals with the required quota of renewable fuels. Sweden and Latvia has lobbied heavily claiming that they already have done so much and already have a high share. Poland has dug their heels into the ground, wishing to expand, rather than reduce, the use of coal. Some of the reactions are clearly rhetorical to show the own voters that “we are defending your interests”. But where are the real winners and losers?

Tags: climate energy efficiency europe latvia poland renewables sweden

Posted by: keulenae

Because LED light is so focused, a 100 lumen LED desk lamp will seem quite bright.
Energy Outlook | The Context of Efficiency

Comments:

Let's not even begin to discuss the ideological implications of this statement. posted by keulenae

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Here's a nice example of the vital distinction between consumption and efficiency. If I told you that a company was about to introduce a new car model that was expected to average 56 miles per gallon, and that it was going to be so cheap that nearly anyone could afford one, that would sound like great news, wouldn't it? Perhaps it depends on the context in which that car is introduced, and our assumptions about what it will displace. The car in question is Tata Motors' eagerly-awaited "1-Lakh" car--referring to its 100,000 Rupees price equating to $2546 at yesterday's exchange rate--and the target market is millions of Indians who haven't been able to afford a car yet. Even at an expected efficiency of 56 mpg, though, the Nano, to give its proper name, will create incremental consumption of petroleum products and new greenhouse gases emissions.

Tags: cars conservation development energy efficiency india tata transport

Posted by: keulenae
