Nederland wordt overspoeld door gevaarlijke elektrische apparaten, snoeren en speelgoed uit Azië. De Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit (VWA) slaat alarm over de spullen die vooral uit China komen.

Van de 380 partijen die de vroegere Keuringsdienst van Waren afgelopen jaar in vooral de Rotterdamse haven onderzocht, voldeed 20 tot 50 procent niet aan de veiligheidseisen. Stekkerblokken bleken te dunne kabels te hebben, waardoor snel kortsluiting ontstaat. Elektrisch gereedschap was zo beroerd gemaakt dat elektrocutie voor de gebruiker dreigt en pluchen dieren leverden verstikkingsgevaar op.

40 per cent of fire fleet 'obsolete' - Belfast Today

AROUND 40 per cent of Northern Ireland's fire appliances are technically obsolete at more than 10 years old, with two veteran engines approaching their second decade in service, Government figures have revealed.

Statistics show 46 engines out of the total fleet of 111 are at least 10 years old.

In addition, the fire death rate among people between ages 75 and 85 is three times the national average and after age 85, it increases to four times the national average. These statistics are especially alarming when researchers estimate that by 2030, the 65 and older population will exceed 70 million people.

Because many users of such aged appliances are elderly, the ministry had to think of an effective way to warn them of the dangers of using electrical appliances far beyond their service life.

The medium the ministry chose was the kairanban circular notice, a traditional system of passing information from house to house in a neighborhood in which an advisory flyer is attached to a clipboard and passed among residents, who stamp it with their seal or sign it to indicate they have read it.

The ministry has distributed 3.5 million flyers to local governments so they can be circulated right away. About 50 million households are expected to see the flyer.

Every year, electrical fires result in thousands of injuries, hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and, in some cases, even death.

While some fires are caused by faulty products, many more are caused by the misuse and poor maintenance of electrical equipment, incorrectly installed wiring, overloaded circuits and misapplied extension cords.

Smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and escape ladders are all examples of emergency equipment used in homes to take action when a fire occurs. A device called an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, or AFCI, is a residential circuit breaker designed to detect arcing faults and thus prevent fires from occurring in the first place.

Arcing can occur when you're hanging a picture and inadvertently pierce a wire in the wall, when old wires fray or when you string extension cords together to run fans or space heaters.

Approximately 2,300 injuries, 67,800 fires and 485 deaths occur each year that can be associated with home wiring, totaling $868 million in property losses. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that "AFCI devices may address 50 percent or more of these fires."

Channel 4 - News - Plane suffered 'electrical failure'

A British Airways plane carrying 76 passengers suffered a major electrical failure just after taking off, an official accident report said.

In what accident investigators described as "a serious incident", the Airbus A319 lost a number of important systems having just left Heathrow for Budapest.

The crew reported an audible "clunk" and the flight deck suddenly became very dark as the aircraft was approaching 20,000ft, said the report from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Another fire, this one on Sherwood Place in Ocean View. The fire started on the second floor of the 45 unit building. Fire officials determined that there was an electrical problem in one of the walls. It's an issue the city codes inspection office is also looking into.

This is why the European Union has funded a project to allow your fridge or your TV to communicate with your phone or your PC. This project, named Amigo, will end in February 2008 and was granted €13 millions by the EU. This project enrolled powerful partners such as France Telecom, Microsoft or Philips which pay the rest of the bill, expected to reach €23 millions.
