effective practices using blogs and wikis at the college level

does anyone have any guidance/resources on how to most effectively use a blog or wiki to compliment a college level course. Any suggestions? Anyone you know who is particularly effective at using this to enhance a course.

e.g., I am using blogs in a master's level course as a metacognitive journaling activity (http://etap687.edublogs.org), but am very nterested in what other's are doing and how, and what is known about best practices, research, etc.

any info would be fab.

We begin a new semester today and this will be the first time that I'll be using a wiki with one of my classes. It is a special topics seminar for graduate students. My intent is to provide them with the experience of building and participating in their own PLC, so they we'll play a key role in creating much of the course content (which will be housed on the wiki). I'd also suggest looking through the many wikis linked from http://clifmims.wetpaint.com/page/Course+Topics. There are many teachers doing some good things listed on this page.

Great stuff, Zaid.

I'm using 90%+ of this stuff (Moodle, Joomla...), so I'll seriously look at the ones I'm not using. No mention of Diigo? If you are new to Diigo, I guess I understand. It will replace Delicious on the list soon, I promise. The good thing is that Diigo will continue to support your Delicious account. I still tend to use Delicious for the actual searches though - hard to severe the cord completely.

Dear Paul McKenzie,

Thanks for your great feedback and suggestions :)

Yes, I am kind of new to Diigo, but I don't think it will replace Delicious on my list for a while (It has become a habit difficult to unlearn!). However, I have added Diigo to the list as a Social bookmarking tool with collaborative learning features (groups, forums, etc.)?

Anyway, I believe these two tools are both worthy in being on this list :)

I will still use Delicious to manage my social bookmarks, and then I will transfer them to Diigo and use this tool to collaborate and communicate with great people like you :)

Why not do all in one? Perhaps, in the future, but I still like a clean focused tool on social bookmarking that provides no distraction except great URLs :)

Free Online Virtual Classroom

WiZiQ's free Virtual Classroom is an online internet mediated classroom where the teacher and the students are connected to share a common workspace. In this online session, they make use of audio-video conferencing, text chat, whiteboard, and content sharing capabilities. There are no costs for using the virtual classroom. The sessions are recorded and are available online on WiZiQ, which can be accessed for later review or reference.

Attendees can join a session with privileges to converse verbally with others; draw and write on whiteboard; and share Presentations, PDFs, Flash and Images. The teacher may withdraw or re-assign these privileges to the attendees. A Teacher can withdraw privileges from the attendee in terms that the attendee can not converse, or upload anything to share on whiteboard; in this case, the attendee is a spectator. For the last few months I have especially liked Zoho's (http://zoho.com) and Diigo (http://www.diigo.com). These are 2 robust tools. I continue to learn new things about them and am impressed with the many contributions they can make to teaching and learning. Both are also helpful in the management of files and information. Trust me; you and your students should be using both of these technologies. :)

Clif,

I love Zoho Creator and use it for all my online forms, but my favorite resource is wikispaces. I have had little trouble gaining buy-in once people see the ease of use.

Google Apps continue to make life easier. Several of the teachers I coach are using Google Groups and Docs with their classes.
My teachers love PhotoStory 3, Animoto, BubblShare and Flickr.
Flickr Storm is the best at searching and managing photos!
