Killer Feature Request: Import RSS Feeds as Bookmarks

Diigo is fantastic, but I wish Diigo could automatically "bookmark" (import rss feeds) my latest shared items from Google Reader, favorite YouTube videos, StumbleUpon items, etc. Then I wouldn't need FriendFeed and I would benefit from being able to tag and share those items just like I can with my regular Diigo bookmarks!

Down the road, it would be cool to have automatic semantic tagging of the bookmarked/imported content like Twine.com.

Could not agree more Matthew. I think this would be a killer feature for any bookmark service...

that said, I would hope that this functionality might be limited to a "pro" account. Spammers would have a field day with this easy method to dump links into a service like Diigo.

When I search all (!) "My bookmarks" with a tag, the search does not return a previously used tag (however, tag is listed in "my recent tags"). Am I doing something wrong? (I am quite new to diigo)

Bug with "Top Contributors" for a tag

Before the upgrade, when I looked at a specific tag, such as "webdesign," the top contributors box would show the people with the most tags first - I was working my way up to the top six, I know!! :) anyway, now it is just random, and the "top contributors" have only a few tags! It really helps to find people with a lot of the same tag, because this is a good source for new bookmarks. Now it seems to just do a search on people with the same tag, but doesn't order it by most to least.

Editing Tags CONSIDERED HARMFUL

It appears that the bug where renaming a tag would cause all bookmarks containing that tag to be marked as though they had been bookmarked "today" has been fixed, but iIs there any intention of fixing the fact that when I edit a bookmark to remove a tag it modifies the date of that bookmark?

This is, in my opinion, broken and extremely annoying -- it means that I can't really go back and clean up or retag bookmarks without completely loosing the chronological ordering of the bookmarks (which is obviously one of the top ways for users to find things they've previously bookmarked).

Group Bookmarking - Members see existing group bookmark?

Now that I am starting to generate some interest with my blog post geared towards our arcade collecting community;

I am wondering...if a new user signs up for my group, and they go to bookmark a page that has already been bookmarked, will the icon turn red like it does on the individual bookmarking basis? Or will the dialog box that opens indicate that someone in the group has already bookmarked the resource?

How do we tell, surely this must be a feature.

I like the "recommended tags" suggestions. How about a "recent tags" option below it, which would include whatever I've just tagged another page?

This would help with consistency, where several tags ought to be the same between pages bookmarked one after another, but maybe just one tag changes.

Group Tagging using established structure

I did a search through group features, checked these forums, and checked under tools, but I can't figure out an answer to my question. I even setup a dummy account, signed up to my group, but I wasn't able to do what I wanted.

What I am wondering is, when a member signs up to my group, will the autocomplete for pre-existing tags work and pull from the tags in the group? I saw a forum post here where someone was looking to 'migrate' their existing group tags into the group for availability of group members. But it would seem to me, if a link is set to public, then the tags would be public and from a 'how it works' standpoint, it would seem that would be a public diigo access database to pull from.

I don't know. I just basically want to know if this is a built in feature yet or not. Can my group members start to type in a tag and see the tags that have already been used and are available?

Thanks for any help. Can't live without Diigo. 5k bookmarks and growing.

1) Your group home page ===> Manage group ==> Group tag dictionary
2) You can set up your tag dictionary for the group
3) When your group members want to share a bookmark to the group from toolbar bookmark window, they can choose tags from the dictionary.

And now, I realise there 's not enough tags in those.
I want to add many tags in one time on several URLs bookmarked.
though there is case to check several bookmark and edit, but not any function for that (?)

I hate tagging. I use it sometimes to make sure that I won't miss important stuff, but tagging every single thing I bookmark? No way. The catch was that with delicious I HAD to, otherwise I would never find anything again. Needless to say, when I heard you didn't have to tag anything with Diigo because it caches the pages, and you can search the content instead, I was overjoyed.

The thing is, it doesn't work. If it wasn't for the imported tags from delicious, I wouldn't be able to find anything at all. For example, I bookmarked a page titled "FancyForm - Javascript checkbox replacement". I searched for 'fancy', 'form', javascript' and 'checkbox', and it didn't came up. What did came up were pages with those words as TAGS, but not content.

I read somewhere it's because when the engine is overwhelmed, it takes a while for it to catch up with the full content. I hope this is the case, because this is such a great service. It really is just a full-text search short of being perfect (and the advanced search link being a little more accessible).

Many bookmarks are importing to the system which needs some time to fetch cache pages and index them.

If cache pages(except JPG, PDF, flash etc) are available in your bookmark page, you can full-text search them.

Firefox 3 Beta compatability

Are you guys working on a firefox-3 capable version of the extension? I can't even install it (even via https://secure.diigo.com) because the extension itself doesn't use a secure upgrade ....

Will it finally be able to synchronize my diigo bookmarks into firefox with the tags and everything in place?

P.S.: still waiting for an invite to preview.diigo :)

Hi,

Though Diigo is still working on an Firefox 3 supported toolbar, here's a quick trick to the impatient that allows you to use Diigo toolbar with Firefox 3 beta.

Open new tab and type: about:config
Click on the "I will be careful, I promise" button (deselect the checkbox in here if this message is annoying)
Right click here anywhere and choose New -> Boolean
Type the name as: "extensions.checkUpdateSecurity" (without quotes of course)
In next dialog, choose false.
Now, install the toolbar and voila you'll have it!!

Bug - Two word tags OK in My Diigo tag cloud but not working in groups. 2 design issues

I have a private group that I automatically store numerous sites in and have My Diigo where all my borkwarked sites sit.

I have come across three issues one of which seems like a bug.

1. If you update tag in My Diigo doesn't automatically update tags on same sites in groups - Yesterday i went and edited a number of tags in My Diigo fully expecting these to flow automatically into my groups where the same site is bookmarked with the same tags - however they didn't. Is this something you are looking at or should I remember to update My Diigo as well as the groups. This is a pain because 1. your group tags get out of sync with your my Diigo tags 2. It takes quite a lot of time to have to do this across my Diigo and your groups. i.e. when I imported my bookmarks from favourites it bought in a folder name I didn't want as a tag so had to change across My Diigo (easy) and in my group (difficult and point 2.
2. You cannot edit tags in groups like you can in My Diigo. i.e. i wanted to delete a tag across 70 sites that came from favourites in ie and had to do manually in groups in each site but you can delete all in my diigo in 1 action
3. BUG BUG BUG - after editing the tags in my group yesterday now when i click on any >1 letter word in the tag cloud no bookmarks are bought back. However in My Diigo clicking the same tag in the tag cloud returns the bookmarked sites.

Summary of 4 different problems (Lists - Multiple tagging - Tag confusion - Contact information)

Dear Diigo developers,

Thank-you for your work. So far, I have been very pleased with Diigo and believe it has great potential. Having used it for some time, I would like to point out a few issues which could enhance Diigo and allow it to become a more professional, powerful tool.

- Lists:
It is extremely frustrating that Lists do not prevent the creation of multiple copies of the same item. When a bookmark is (accidentally) added to the same List on two separate occasions, that List's item count goes up (eg. "Showing 20 of 20" becomes "Showing 20 of 21"), and the bookmark is displayed multiple times under the "By Time" tab. There is no intelligible reason as to why Lists should function this way. In fact, for people such as myself who use lists as a sort of "ordered checklist of sites to visit", it wastes my time by sending me to the same page repeatedly. Also, it causes the item count on my lists to grow incredibly daunting - even when I actually end up having few items. This makes me misjudge the amount of time needed to visit all the bookmarks on my List, and affects my overall time-management! Such duplication within Lists needs to be written out of the program so that Diigo can be put to professional use.

- Simultaneously adding a tag to multiple bookmarks:
If I want to add a specific tag(s) to two or more bookmarks, I have to either edit each bookmark separately, or check all the relevant ones, choose 'Edit' in the drop-down menu at the top of the page, and then manually type each tag for each bookmark into the textbox that appears. An example of a more desirable method can be found on Gmail, where I can "label" several messages simultaneously by checking all the relevant messages and choosing the desired label from a drop-down menu. Using the same method - just substituting messages for bookmarks and Labels for Tags - Diigo could instantly become a far more usable tool. My lengthy observation of the Diigo Forums shows that I am not the only user looking forward to this innovation. The user drojack has posted the same suggestion ( http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/2139).

- Different versions of the same tag:
When I search through my bookmarks by tags, I sometimes do not get all the results I want because some of the relevant bookmarks have accidentally been tagged under a slightly different version ( e.g. some relevant bookmarks are tagged "community", others are tagged "communities", others are tagged "comunity", etc.) It is difficult to remember the exact conjugations of words that already exist in your tagcloud, especially when you use Diigo a lot and have a great variety of tags. Furthermore, one can easily misspell a word and thereby accidentally create a new tag. To prevent this, I suggest that the Diigo form for creating new bookmarks should anticipate which tag the user is entering when creating a new bookmark. A wonderful example of this was the drop-down menu which used to be available on the form, but which is unfortunately no longer there (at least in my Firefox 2.0.0.11 browser). An alternative and even better system would the one used by the Firefox extension "Bookmark Tags". Let's say I want to create a new bookmark using Bookmark Tags, and I want to tag it 'french'. When I bookmark it and type 'f' into the 'Tags' text box, it alphabetically suggests the first tag that I already use beginning with 'f' (e.g. 'facebook'). When I continue typing, it automatically changes its suggestion, whilst still suggesting existing tags ( e.g. 'facebook', - 'free' - 'free' - 'french '). If 'french' is a tag I have not used before, it will stop making suggestions after I have typed 'frenc'. I then simply finish typing the word, and Bookmark Tags recognises it as a new tag. Using this kind of system, Diigo users can more efficiently create and retrieve both bookmarks and tags.

- Lack of means to contact the developers:
Last but not least, I am rather disconcerted by the fact that the users' only means of (perchance!) reaching the developers is through the Community Forum. I searched the entire site and was not able to find a single e-mail address for "User Support", "Helpline" or anything to that effect (instead, I found this info-email for people interested in "partnerships, investment, licensing, and career opportunities"). A more direct line of communication would benefit not only the users and the community, but also the developers and the program.

2. Simultaneously adding a tag to multiple bookmarks: This feature was already implemented in diigo V3. You can use it soon.
3. Different versions of the same tag: What's browser you use? IE or FF? Diigo toolbar has a tag auto suggestion feature which works as you described. However, some users reported this feature didn't work recently. With the upcoming Diigo V3 toolbar, this problem can be fixed.

Hi Joel,

Lists - recreating the problem:
1) In My Diigo > My Bookmarks, click 'Create a List'. Name the list 'Test' (the rest is up to you). Then return to My Bookmarks.
2) Locate a bookmark that has two or more tags attached to it. Let's say it is called 'Fairtrade' and has been tagged 'shopping', 'politics' and 'educational'. Add Fairtrade to the Test list, using the drop-down 'Add to List ...' menu.
3) Once it has been "Added to List successfully!", take a look at Test by clicking on its link in the 'My Lists' box.
4) In Test, you will see that the main blue box is set to 'By position' and contains 'Fairtrade'. In the top-right corner of the blue box you will see "1-1 of 1". If you click on the 'By time' tab, you will see the same thing.
6) Return to My Bookmarks and find your 'My Tags' box. Click on the first tag associated with 'Fairtrade', in this case 'shopping'. This will show you all your bookmarks tagged 'shopping'.
7) Locate 'Fairtrade' and add it to Test using the drop-down menu again. Again, you will see a message saying it has been "Added to List successfully!".
8) Go My Bookmarks > Test. In the blue box, you will see that the 'By Position' tab still shows only one copy of 'Fairtrade', but the text in the top-right corner has changed to '1-2 of 2'. Click on the 'By time' tab and you will see Fairtrade has been added twice.
(If you repeat steps 6. - 8. for each of the other tags (i.e. 'politics' and 'educational'), then by the end, 'Fairtrade' will have been add to the 'By time' tab of Test a total of four times, and the text in the top-right corner of the blue box will read '1-4 of 4', even though it is all one and the same bookmark.)

I have recently moved bookmarks to Diigo to find that a basic feature of tagging multiple bookmarks simultaneously is not available or not obvious to me. Is this something that you would be supporting in the future and can you suggest a work around to manually tagging many bookmarks with the same tag?

Social bookmaring is better way to get traffic to you sites.. may increase the ROI of th site . Rather than tagging multiple sites simultaneuosly. is gud but everyday bookmarking two or three sites and making comments to adding more friends in diggi will benefit you

I agree that once you've tagged your bookmarks you just tag one or two a day but if you'r importing from another service or another computer then a mass tagging feature would be benficial. Also if I'm reasearching and I've found a new keyword to associate with my bookmarks it helps to have a quick way to add that tag to all the relevent bookmarks in one swoop. One should be able to simply select multiple bookmarks and select a tag from a commom dropdown menu much like gmail labels. Frankly the tagging feature is one of the major attractions for me as it allows me to organize my information better but not having the functionality that I've mentioned above is frustrating and I really hope that the Diggo team will consider it.

I am understanding that what drojack, want to say. what i am saying that there is no benefit of aading multiple bookmars at time . so i think it's gud that digo.com has not this facilty.....of importing bookmarks..

We don't want to add multiple bookmarks.

We want to add/remove TAGs to/from several bookmarks . Those bookmarks have already been bookmarked by us. We just want to edit their tags at the same time.

Webservices I think you've misunderstood me. I'm not talking about bookmarking I'm referring to tagging of bookmarks. Being able to tag multiple items is the very foundation of a tagging system. Regardless, a suggestion does not have to be useful to everyone for it to become reality and I hope that you can appreciate my need for it even though you might not agree with its merits.

Tag Input Form No Longer Shows My Tags Dropdown List

When I begin to type in the Tag Input Form field, I no longer get a drop-down list of my current tags. And even if I click on the drop-down arrow next to the field, I still don't get the list.

Nothing happens.

I use Firefox 2.0.0.11

Any idea of what's wrong here?

I believe these are two different but related bugs:
- tag drop down lists no longer working
- tag based navigation (link and tagclouds) no longer working

On the second one I have opened another thread at http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/2103

I feel Diigo has some big issues today. Maggie, any help?

I also use Firefox 2.0.0.11.
I have not installed any new extensions.
I have tried un- and re-installing Diigo.

I still do not have that drop-down menu anymore.

Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem. However, you can use the preview toolbar soon in which we will ensure this feature works in your browser.

Tagging problem - 'My Tags' is not updating

I've noticed today (1st Dec) that if I add new bookmarks from the toolbar or edit tags within the Diigo site the new tags are not included in 'My Tags'.

The new tags are there in the list of bookmarks and I can click on them and load the bookmark, however, nothing seems to update 'My Tags'. They also don't appear in the edit section of My Tags.

I see from previous topics here that there was a similar problem with tagging in October - perhaps the bug has reoccurred?

Hey Maggie,

Here's a problem I've been trying to solve, I'm hoping there's a obvious solution which I have totally failed to notice.

When I started using Diigo (pre-Groups) I created 2 accounts -- one personal account, and one shared account that could be used by either myself or my collaborator on the project we working on. At that point, if I wanted to add bookmarks and annotations to the shared account, I would log out of my personal account and into the shared one, etc.

Then groups came along, which did exactly what we had been trying to do with the shared account. So I created a group for our project, added myself, my collaborator and the shared account as members of the group, and then shared all of the shared account's bookmarks to the group. Obviously when I did this, the group inherited all of the tags that had been previously created under the shared account.

So (at last) my question: there are a bunch of tags which exist in my Group but do not exist in my personal account (because they were created when I was logged in under my shared account in the pre-Groups days.) This means that when I'm adding a bookmark and sharing it to my Group, the older tags don't auto-fill in -- leading me to guess at what the tag might be, and then getting duplicate tags based on plural/non-plural, synonyms, etc. Is there any way to either: 1) import my tags.bookmarks from my Group to my personal account, or 2) import my tags/bookmarks from my old "shared" account to my current personal account?

Sorry for being so verbose. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Hi David,

Thanks for your feedback. One solution is to use the "save" button in each group bookmark that you wish to copy to your own bookmarks area.

Later we may consider offering a batch copy, but it will be a premium feature for paying accounts. Not only it's not a frequently demanded feature (thus suitable for power group users), it will also deter spammers from abusing such feature.

When I try to bookmark a page with toolbar, tag suggestions dno't show at all (drop-down menu is empty and i cannot see any suggestions while typing.) I have quite many, approyimately 600 tags, mostly imported.

But the Diigo bookmarklet show them correctly. (I would use it iw I was able to meke the private the deafault setting.)

Hi,
I tried it on two computers, on another it ran correctly (so my Diigo account seems to be OK), on the original computer I reinstalled the toolbar, and tried, but didn't work.

The bookmarklet would be OK, but I couldn't make the Private feature to be default, but I need it.

Hi, I use 2 accounts. One for informal tagging and the other for formal tagging.

For the sake of clarity:

Informal tagging: Tags gone wild. Add as many as possible.

Formal tagging: For me, I stick to the rule of 5 tags or less only per one bookmark

Currently, I do this by having two different browsers opened, and re-highlighting/re-adding my sticky notes to the other account.

Is there a better way of doing this? Preferably saving only the bookmarks + sticky note + highlights - the tags?

The reason I say no tags is because I use the tag cloud/tag list as a preview for how useful the tags really are for searching on my formal tagging account.
