Something Wrong with Group Widget

Hi,

I run a group called Art.In.General, today when I tried to use the group widget for promotion on my blog, it just didn't work! I am sure I got the code right with simple copying and pasting, but nothing showed up neither on Firefox or IE. Rather strangely, the group linkrolls work just fine on my blog, I was wondering have anyone run into the same problem? Any solution?

Search, Advanced Search, Date Search??

I just don't get it; my bookmarks show me the DATE on which they were added, but there's no way to search by date?!@?

I'd like to be able to see the bookmarks I added, yesterday, last week, last month, etc.

Sure, I'd like to be able to see bookmarks I added between any two dates;

Sure I'd love to see a Simile Timeline of my bookmarks;

Sure I'd love to see a calendar view of my bookmarks, a la my cheapo digital camera;

Sure I'd love to see graphs and charts of a variety of attributes--over time.

Am I missing some existing features??? I just found the advanced search today--I don't use the sidebar and I think it's ONLY available in the sidebar.

I am sorry there is no "Search by date" feature. We may add it if more and more people request this feature. However, it is a challenge to add more UI elements in "My boomark" page as there is already too much stuff there. Any good idea?

Hi Joel,

I agree with you that the "My Bookmarks" page is crowded; but the problem is that the "tabs" are really just searches. I hope you can change the UI so that the tabs do more than just perform canned queries.

Have you seen the SIMILE projects @ MIT? I've noticed that some of these projects have graduated and are now on code.google.com.

How about providing an RDF version of Diigo Data and then providing a suite of services around that core...from a semantic media wiki to a simple view like this:

excluding tags from search results

Is there any way to exclude tags from a search? The more I use diigo, the more I find I need this--for instance, bookmarks from tag A but not tag B (ie, not also tagged B--to get a list of items tagged A, Tagged A and C, etc., but not A and B). The only option I can find in the advanced search is to exclude the word B everywhere--but I want some pages with the word B in them--just not if they are tagged B. Am I making sense?

If there is not currently a way to do this, I really hope one is implemented--as I said, it would be really useful.

Q: Highlighting and privacy?

I was using diigo purely as a bookmarker, but i've recently discovered how useful the highlighting is (in particular with regard to notes to access from a mobile).

However I'm wondering about the privacy settings. When I highlight something it says "private highlight by soulgrind r", but even if i'm not logged in, those highlights show up under the "expand" link on my user page. That seems confusing to me, as they aren't really private (though i guess it refers to actually seeing the highlights "in page". )

Also, I'd like the default setting of HIGHLIGHTS (as opposed to bookmarks) to be private. If I bookmark a page, and tag it, etc.. then I probably am happy for it to be public (or at least I have the option to choose).

If I highlight something then its often just a reminder, or a quick bit of temporary information for me (how it get to a place, how to beat a level in a game, etc..).
So, ideally, I'd like to be able to set the default privacy for Bookmarks (tagged), Quick Bookmarks, AND Highlights (no_tag).

If I decide to tag it later then I'll probably make it a pubic bookmark, and its probably worth sharing.. but if it's "no_tag" then its probably not worth sharing (at least not yet).

Toolbar Search buttons

I recently tried the customized search feature, and I absolutely fell in love with it.

There's just one problem--I don't want the highlight and word buttons after the search bar. I don't use them, and they take up valuable space. I am using Firefox 2.0.0.13. , so I figured it wouldn't be a problem. It's really easy to customize toolbars, so I just dragged the icons into the little holding area. Easy.

Except every time I use the search bar by typing in the box, they come back! Then I have to go to customize and remove them again. Which works--until the next time I type in a search. This doesn't happen when I use the context menu to search.

Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior? I really like the diigo search bar, and I don't want to switch back to Firefox's built in one, but this is buggin' the heck out of me!

Thanks for your feedback.
In current design, the search input, the search button and the keyword buttons function as a whole. That's why there is only one check box for the 3 toolbar items in the options window.

We'll consider providing an option to hide the keyword buttons. For now, here are a few tips:
1. drag the keyword button group to the right most so they don't occupy useful space
2. delete your input in the search box. the keyword buttons will remove

So, I am a bit confused about what exactly we are allowed to use as an avatar image. Currently the page says this: Do not upload a photo containing cartoons, celebrities, nudity, artwork or copyrighted image.

So, what it seems to mean is that I cannot upload anything but an actual picture of myself, since I can't upload any cartoons or artwork. Surely this can't be correct?

Also, what is the aspect ratio for avatars? I would hate to upload something and it get all squished or stretched.

it means it must be something you own the rights to. A cartoon or picture you took yourself would be fine.

It seems a little strict, as very few companies have a problem with their copyrights being used as forum avatars.. infact a lot of companies give away promotional avatars and other stuff to advertise products.

I'd imagine diigo is just covering it' back.. so as long as u are sensible it should be fine. I think its 48x48 or a ratio of 1:1.

Ahh, that would definitely make more sense. But what about things that are said by their creators to be free for use as avatars or for general reuse? Do those fall under the copyrighted image category?

No, we don't think those fall under the copyrighted image category. It's fair use.

On the help page, it says you are able to use your OpenID to make a new account. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to link your existing account with OpenID, like there is with facebook. A way to use your OpenID to log in to your existing account, you know?

two word tags

Am I allowed to have two word tags? It seems that when I try to do this it doesn't seem to work.

For example, if I want to have two types of mapping--one for 'mind mapping' and one for 'geo mapping'. It seems that when I view these the words get shuffled about. In other words it shows mapping mind or something like that.

Even if I post most of them in the open forum, I also have some ideas that could be of business value and perhaps give a lead especially if it could be silently implemented and released as "news" instead of someone else copying and implementing it right before its finished here.

I wonder if you shoule put up a dedicated "business ideas" email address or perhaps better - a forum where one can only see own posts and replies to them, so that the "Diigo gods" ;-) can communicate with the contributors without revealing it (yet) to the whole world.

I've been thinking about some of the various issues related to Private and Semi-Private communications for a while. Obviously email is one (of a great number of possible)solution(s). I'm curious as to whether you've thought of using a Private or Invited Group here at Diigo for this purpose?

I've done a bit of preliminary testing and, so far, it seems to be quite acceptable. It even has the advantage that I can share a copy of Sticky among groups when I create it.

As for the 'verification' of a person's apparent Identity and authorized affiliations, this seems to be a very large Subject throughout the whole internet. The line of thought that I seem to be gravitating towards is based on the Community "TrustMetrics" that are so actively discussed within wiki communities. In this case, for example, I am much more comfortable entering into an exchange with someone posting under an alias of "fuzbolero" than I would normally be, simply because I have already been in communication with "maggie_diigo" and I am prepared to accept her evident acceptance of you.

This whole "identity" issue is relatively complicated when you track it across even a small number of "use" cases. Interestingly, after a several years of participating in related discussions, I've obviously settled on the wiki practice of use of "RealName". Life has gotten much better since doing so, in spite of my initial concerns and "fears".

(This reminds me I really need to add my picture to this site, since I am planning to become a more active member. Maggie... (since I'm likely to be 'promoting' the concepts of TransClusion here)... it sure would be nice if I could just add a link to the avatar-icon and have one of the (too many already existing ones) appear there, rather than having to add yet another item to my toDoUponUpdateOfImage task lists.
