idea: get tags/recommended tags from lists

Two connected ideas that'd be useful to me:

1) Recommended tag suggestions from lists. (or even groups)
I've added tags to my lists, but i'm not quite sure what use they have. But it seems to me that if i'm adding an item to a list, and that list has tags, then those might be suitable for items in that list.
I'd imagine that when you select a list from the dropdown it'd pop up another list of recommended tags, based on that list's tags. *

2) Automatically add list tags to bookmarks.
Maybe more extreme, but it'd be fine for me. If i add an item to a list then i'd be quite happy if ALL the tags from that list were automatically added to that bookmark.

I tend to find that a lot of my bookmarks fall into 3 or 4 distinct categories, and i'm adding the same 7 or 8 tags to each bookmark in a category. Even with autocomplete it seems a little inefficient. Being able to use lists to quickly add common groups of tags would be useful.

*maybe with a "add all list tags" option too.

Hi!

I have the Diigo toolbar and when I bookmark sites, I'd like the option of putting it in more than one group and/or list at the time that I bookmark, instead of me having to go to my bookmarks after the fact and adding them. I know I can select one group and one list. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a way to putting bookmarks in multiple lists and groups when bookmarking?

If you save a bookmark to a private list is it automatically private, or does the bookmark need to explicitly made private on it's own?

Privacy for bookmarks and privacy for lists are separate things. One is independent from the other. Your bookmarks will always keep their privacy setting that you chose when you created (or imported) them. If a bookmark was public before, it will still be public when being saved to a private list. If a bookmark was private before, it will still be private when being saved to a private list. So, a private list can contain both private *and* public bookmarks, yet the list as a whole will remain private. In a list, you cannot see the privacy setting for bookmarks because the privacy setting applies to the list as a whole (but as individual bookmarks, public bookmarks will remain public as already mentioned above).

Apologies if these feature exists already but I haven't found it. I think it would be helpful to have some way to "smart save" groups of bookmarks. Maybe smart lists - bookmarks are automatically included in the list if they match pre-defined criteria. Alternatively, how about compound tags - saving a group of tags as one compound or meta tag inclusive of all sub tags.

smart list would indeed be awesome. It appears to be a pretty easy feature to implemement, so I cant work out why more services don't use it. (Flickr for one, but I've suggested it on several services that use tags and it never appears. ) AFAIK zooomr is the only place that seems to do it.

One other half-way of doing it might be a "suggested lists" under the "suggested tags" where it suggests lists that have the same tags as the tags you add.

IMHO, smart lists, combined with an ability to enter tags on the toolbar and click QuickD would make it much faster to add links.

PS/ I'll stick it here. Adding links to new lists is a real pain, cos when you create a list it doesn't show up in the dropdown for about 5 minutes.

Yes! We need a way to automatically include bookmarks in a list based on specific tag combinations.

If one wants to take it to the extremes (and i'd like that ;), one advanced way could be to have a Gmail-like filtering in Diigo. Gmail allows you to automatically label emails based on specific criterias. The same thing could work in Diigo. You could filter bookmarks by a combination of tags, bookmarkers, lists etc., and then assign these bookmarks to tags, lists, convert to public/private etc.

Too advanced, too complicated? I say "advance enough" ;)

gmail filters would be very cool for power users. Though I think smart lists/smart groups might be easier for a lot of users to pick up. Both would be nice ;-)

Hello,

Here are some suggestions. Hope you'll understand despite of my french accent ;-)

1 - When bookmarking, it would be nice that the window allows to add a bookmark to several lists, using tickbox.

2 - The sections created in a list are unstable. It seems occuring with other users. I precise i'm using IE7.

3 - If I manage a long list (several pages) with some sections, it's not very easy to drag and drop for place the bookmark in the right place. Developping a tickbox tool would be great.

4 - Lists appears with the next modified in first position. Alphabetical order would be a better organisation.

5 - Is there any way to visualise all my URL that DON'T belong to any list ?

6 - Can I see or edit all the tags used in one of my list?

I think you have some great suggestions.

It would be great if we could choose to display options as drop-down-lists or as tick boxes. I would rather use tick boxes myself since it's much faster and more comfortable for me.

I would like organize my thousands of bookmarks by splitting them into different lists. Therefore it would be very handy if i could also find bookmarks that i haven't yet assigned to a list.

I cannot understand why Diigo doesn't allow us to browse or search for bookmarks in one specific list by tags. I would really like to see that implemented!

Note: Suggested in the assumption that lists are meant to act as a more traditional bookmark system

Organize list entries view - Right now if there's too many entries in a list, I can't find a way of moving an entry much other than dragging it a few entries up or down.

a. Folder like Sections - So user can organize a bunch of entries under a section (like a bunch of bookmarks of the same entry but different pages) and when they are moved up, it is moved up as a group rather than one by one. Would also be cool if the section can be made invisible so when viewing the list there's no sign of a section but the section entries act the same when dragged.

b. Page view organization - Moves an entry from say page 5 to page 2 instantly by having a dual pane view of the pages or even a thumbnail view of a bunch of pages with their entries draggable. You could even go further and add a restrictive page view like system where a bunch of entries would be restricted to page 1 and another set restricted to page 2 rather than based on order of entries for public view (though this would eliminate # of entries per page view)

c. Tags inside List - Tags of entries inside the list are shown on top of the first list entry in a hideable box. (Just feel like it's quicker for giving a preview of the content of the list than when the box is on the side, at least for lists) I guess this sort of acts like a bundle but I feel it's easier since the list is made already before grouping the tags. Maybe take it even further by having sections show only the tags listed under it's entry

d. Reading list - Duplicating a list and putting it in another section where the options act more like a rss reader that can be flagged as read/unread and starred but only for that list. Could be useful if for example I chanced upon someone's list but didn't finish reading all the entries under it and I'd like to mark which entry I didn't finish reading or want to take note of (so I can mass save the entries I want only) and get back to it later on.

Sections in lists are counted just as ordinary bookmarks.

Diigo correctly displays [20/50/100] bookmarks on a page (depends on your preferences), but counters on top and bottom of the list includes sections - and will display "next >" even when all bookmarks are displayed on first page.

Example:
20 bookmarks per page
19 bookmarks in list
2 sections
reloading page is needed to update top/bottom counters
There will be next > pointing at empty page...

Drag&drop of items in lists is nice, but there are two problems.

1. It's impossible to select a text (from comments, title etc.)
2. We can't drag&drop more that one item (useful for bigger lists with headings)

Perfect solution of this troubles is in Google's Notebook. Small dragable side with editable content and support of multiselecting...

Hi,

You can add a bookmark to one list when you add bookmark. Please check "Add to a List" checkbox and select list from combobox.

Or you can add all bookmarks in a tag to a list.
1. Search by that Tag in "My Bookmarks".
2. Check "All" checkbox.
3. Select a list from "Add to List.." combobox.

Thx for reply,but even though I have to do the PACK work when or after I save the bookmark,don't I?

I think the list should be like BOND of del.icio.us.The keywords of lists were just a automatic pack work that diigo should help me to do so.

Can you tell me what feature is in BOND of del.icio.us.? Is the Diigo complex Tag search not enough ?

1) A folder which organizes your bookmarks in a traditional way while bundle is about how to organize tags and related bookmarks.
2) An ordered knowledge follow about a topic . For example, you can create a list, add some sections, drag and drop bookmarks to tell your readers what need to be read first, what needed to be paid special attention.

So List is different from the bundle.

Sorry, you have to add those sites to each list currently. However, you can
1) Go to "My bookmark" and filter all your web2.0 bookmarks
2) Select all
3) Add them to a list

To me that is a serious limitation, because I have to keep doing it each time I add a new site. I don't want to have to remember which lists each tag belongs to. For me the delicious approach with bundles is much better. Are there plans to add that feature soon?

By comparing functions in diigo lists and groups, I hope diigo teams could add the following features, or let me know if those features already there waiting for me to discover:

I like being able to add section and order the bookmarks in lists, why no apply those functions to groups? While the bookmarks in groups and otherwise are editable, the bookmarks in lists are NOT editable? WHY? The advantage of being able to order the bookmarks is missing when sending them to blogs. The bookmarks is in a mess in order.

I like the thumbup function in groups. Why not apply it to diigo lists? As groups having bookmarks contributions from move than one members, one webpage could be bookmarked several times by different members and it could bring several entries in a single group. I would suggest diigo team find a way to avoid the multiply entries problem for groups.Also I hope there is more control on the membership, such as being able to contribute bookmarks or not. Furthermore, I would suggest being able to alternatively show the the moderators instead of the owner in the group homepages. The ownership thing is against the web 2.0 spirit.

Hope diigo team could consider those features in the future updates. Or, let me know if the current version has such features.

Although I'm with diigo just several days, I love it. Thanks for such a great tool!

Just a small suggestion:

With the POWERFUL tools on feeds and feed management that DIIGO has to offer, I suggest we flesh this out just a tad more...

Google reader really hit it off in the reviews and the subscribers with the 'shared' feeds option - mostly because people could choose the best of their feeds and republish them. Basically, they mark each article in the feed reader that they want to share, and a feed is set up just of those articles. Made a huge advance on other feed readers that way.

There are many reasons for this - but here is what i think the most compelling is - SPEED. people who like feeds (this is growing exponentially by the way) are people who are too busy to go website to website. Google Reader's function of marking articles and sharing articles from many feeds republished into one feed allows people to subscribe to others shared feed, and take the speed even farther. we dont have to search through all the sites because we have feeds, then we dont have to search through all the feeds because we can subscribe to shared feeds that include the best articles of our interest feed into one feed... enter DIIGO. Diigo can not only share the articles of a particular interest by tag rss - DIIGO folk can actually just clip the important clips of the articles. Its the fastest speed yet - the key points of the key articles of the key feeds of the topic of interest.

DIIGO has their own spin on this with what you already offer - rss feeds on groups, lists, and tags. It applies to this same excited niche of people who like to republish articles in a feed, but actually goes so many steps farther because our users actually comment on those articles with highlights and stickies. The RSS feed that comes from any given tag (or now lists and community) is extremely customized and only covers clips of the article - the bottom line of the article - which is yet another speed factor.

Ok, so what am i getting at???

I really think with all the feed ability DIIGO has could ride this wave because it is the same niche but no well designed competing products. I desperately need a MY FEEDS section!!! Somewhere where I can manage the feeds from my lists, groups, tags, etc. Rename them as news wires, offer them as publications for all those people out there looking for the bottom line of any given topic delivered directly to them. Once we can easily turn our feeds into publications on niches that focus on the bottom line that all busy people desperately need to get to, I think DIIGO could grow leaps and bounds. There you have firmly launched and expansion far beyond just bookmarking, slides, and research - but right into web design, marketing, and so much more.

Just my thoughts. :)

two other plugs ---- whats up with the invites for the beta? I am SALIVATING. 2. Whats up with the fact that the highlight button is all screwy now and i have to use the diigolet?

Some things I would want in a "My Feeds" Section:

1. The ability to have a section where I publicize my feeds. For example, I can have a tag that is Nonprofit Tools. I can have a tag that was "Newsletters". Therefore, anything I tagged both "Nonprofit Tools" and "Newletters" can as of right now be it's own feed. For each bookmark, I go through the process of bookmarking the site or article, highlighting important content, and commenting (sticky) on that highlight. This means that for each article I would be able to sift out the really important bottom line and apply my own expertise to the bottom line. As of right now, this comes into my feed reader as a really informative source, looking a lot like a newsletter about the best of Nonprofit Tools online.

I would love to have a section on my profile that showed all the feeds that I really wanted to highlight as a publication - like the example above. As of right now, all that information is in a notebook I am keeping for when I launch a site on this topic. On my site, I will have a subscription page of feeds that are really just bookmarks with a lot of highlighting and comments - but they look like a Commentary Newsletter.

2. We need to be able to rename a particular feed and add a description to it. Rather than just suzannah's bookmarks on nonprofit tools + newsletters, which is what the title would be at this point, I would be able to reburn the feed as "Suzannah's Nonprofit Tools Newsletters". This would REALLY be able to allow website designers and bloggers a new and profoundly useful tool in Diigo for republishing on their sites.

As of right now, I have to reburn every feed into Feeddemon to change the title and description.

3. ***** (this is really important) Also, we desperately need the ability to adjust feeds so that when a bookmark is "read", it doesnt automatically disappear from the feed. In order for me to publish any feed right now, all my bookmarks have to be "unread". This negates a lot of usefulness in feeds! (think i should write a post about this separately, I guess)

4. Under My Feeds, which of course would be public in most cases, I would be able to give a description of a feed, what kind of links are in it and what kind of commentary, and other users would be able to pick the best subscriptions for them. The best entry for a feed would include feed title, feed tags, feed description, and most importantly, a button leading to the new list feature, which would (as i already can but is underutilized) turn that feed into a slide list so that the potential users/subscribers could see what was in the feed.

These are just some thoughts...

Did you know that well over half of the requests seen by del.icio.us are for RSS feeds? That means that people cruising around our site in browsers are actually in the minority, when it comes down to raw traffic. Instead, our heaviest hitters include personalized home pages, desktop news aggregators, and even stranger things.

With that in mind, it makes sense to remember that small changes can have a big impact. Thus, given that our feeds have been doing a decent job this far, they haven't changed much from their austere beginnings.

Decent isn't great, though. So, as the team's semi-official (and published!) feed junkie, I've been working on some small improvements. I've been looking into how our feeds are used and how to better streamline and present our information in different contexts. These improvements include features like:

* including tag descriptions in feed titles and descriptions where available;
* offering the ability to save bookmarks straight from your feed reader;
* displaying an up-to-date count of saves, without making items appear new again in feed readers;
* building more useful feed content with links to people, tags, and more bookmark details;
* providing more metadata where it seems useful, or less where it appears redundant.

And, this is just the start. We're rolling these changes out gradually, on a per-user-agent basis, and we're planning for more. So, if you don't see any improvements in your favorite feed reader yet—or if the changes haven't quite hit their mark for you—be sure to contact us and let us know!

I really like that you are using diigo's annotation features to produce newsletter-like feeds.

Have you checked out our lists and webslides features? It seems to offer much of what you want for publishing, such as title and description. please let me know if that works for you.

I know I'm late to this discussion, but wanted to go on record as saying that I hope the new release includes PRIVATE RSS ADDRESSES (a la Google Calendar and many of the other online productivity apps.)

I don't think a user should have to make his/her bookmarks public in order to embed them into feed readers, Firefox, or widgets. Of course, being able to do so by tag, list, etc. would be most excellent, but even just a single straight feed of all saved bookmarks would be a big step in the right direction.

There are several ways to go about this.

You can keep your bookmarks private, but you can add them to a list or a group. You can then use the rss address of the list or the group to publish elsewhere.

You can do this even if the group is private . In the new release, a private list will also have a secret rss address.

Hope these solve your needs.

This is not the case.

If a bookmark is private, and then it is placed in a list, it will not show up in the RSS feed. If it is converted to public, than it WILL show up in the RSS feed.

The only difference is that if a comment is marked private on a public bookmark, the private comment will appear in the RSS feed of a public bookmark residing on a private list. But, as Tom says above, the bookmarks must be public to show up on the private list's RSS feed - even with the new release.

Hi,

Firstly, just want to say - fantastic product, and it's just getting better. So far, I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do, as I've only been using it for private bookmarking. But even there, it's way ahead, IMO.

I do have one question though. At the moment, it looks like I can either make the list private or public, but nothing in between. I'd really like to be able to make lists private/public at different levels, including:
- only me
- contact lists (this one would make a huge difference to me)
- groups
- all diigo users
- everyone

Is this something that's already possible, and I'm just missing it? If not, is it something you think you can/will include?

Thanks for your suggestion. You can send the secret web address which is below the title of a private list to others. All recipients can access your private list in this way.
It's an interesting idea to share lists with contact lists. We will give it more thoughts.

I was fooling around with lists last night, and discovered the same approach that you've suggested.

I did wonder, though - how private is a secret url? Might it be possible for someone to accidentally discover one of my private lists, without being invited? My partner mentioned search-bots (not something I know about), and I just thought I'd ask...

Don't worry, robots from google or other search engines can only access your public list. However, if your recipients post the secret url to public place, such as a blog, others may see your list content by clicking the link from the blog.

I was wondering why the rss of lists leaves out my comments, sticky notes and highlights.

For instance, my firefox list is here:

It's RSS feed is this:

Is this an item that may be fixed soon?

Feature Request:: Edit Function in Lists

Some requests for the lists feature:

1. The ability to edit the bookmark while under lists. If i want to change the tags, I have to search for the bookmark all over again in My bookmarks to edit it.

2. The ability to condense the view like it is under "public" view while in private view. If the list is over 6 bookmarks long, a lot of scrolling is necessary, making it harder to move the bookmarks around in order.

I have a couple of lists set up which I can no longer view. I keep getting the ole' "Sorry, the page you requested was not found." This shouldn't happen given that the link to the list is rendered by diigo. What's going on?

Your lists are private - you can only see it when you're login.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm not completely thick! Yes I am logged in and no I still can't see my lists.

Anyway, I logged out and logged back in again to see if that would resolve it. And then got reminded that I hadn't responded to the verification email yet. Which I then did. Then the lists started appearing again. Bit of a flaw in the workflow there I'd say.

Summary of 4 different problems (Lists - Multiple tagging - Tag confusion - Contact information)

Dear Diigo developers,

Thank-you for your work. So far, I have been very pleased with Diigo and believe it has great potential. Having used it for some time, I would like to point out a few issues which could enhance Diigo and allow it to become a more professional, powerful tool.

- Lists:
It is extremely frustrating that Lists do not prevent the creation of multiple copies of the same item. When a bookmark is (accidentally) added to the same List on two separate occasions, that List's item count goes up (eg. "Showing 20 of 20" becomes "Showing 20 of 21"), and the bookmark is displayed multiple times under the "By Time" tab. There is no intelligible reason as to why Lists should function this way. In fact, for people such as myself who use lists as a sort of "ordered checklist of sites to visit", it wastes my time by sending me to the same page repeatedly. Also, it causes the item count on my lists to grow incredibly daunting - even when I actually end up having few items. This makes me misjudge the amount of time needed to visit all the bookmarks on my List, and affects my overall time-management! Such duplication within Lists needs to be written out of the program so that Diigo can be put to professional use.

- Simultaneously adding a tag to multiple bookmarks:
If I want to add a specific tag(s) to two or more bookmarks, I have to either edit each bookmark separately, or check all the relevant ones, choose 'Edit' in the drop-down menu at the top of the page, and then manually type each tag for each bookmark into the textbox that appears. An example of a more desirable method can be found on Gmail, where I can "label" several messages simultaneously by checking all the relevant messages and choosing the desired label from a drop-down menu. Using the same method - just substituting messages for bookmarks and Labels for Tags - Diigo could instantly become a far more usable tool. My lengthy observation of the Diigo Forums shows that I am not the only user looking forward to this innovation. The user drojack has posted the same suggestion ( http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/2139).

- Different versions of the same tag:
When I search through my bookmarks by tags, I sometimes do not get all the results I want because some of the relevant bookmarks have accidentally been tagged under a slightly different version ( e.g. some relevant bookmarks are tagged "community", others are tagged "communities", others are tagged "comunity", etc.) It is difficult to remember the exact conjugations of words that already exist in your tagcloud, especially when you use Diigo a lot and have a great variety of tags. Furthermore, one can easily misspell a word and thereby accidentally create a new tag. To prevent this, I suggest that the Diigo form for creating new bookmarks should anticipate which tag the user is entering when creating a new bookmark. A wonderful example of this was the drop-down menu which used to be available on the form, but which is unfortunately no longer there (at least in my Firefox 2.0.0.11 browser). An alternative and even better system would the one used by the Firefox extension "Bookmark Tags". Let's say I want to create a new bookmark using Bookmark Tags, and I want to tag it 'french'. When I bookmark it and type 'f' into the 'Tags' text box, it alphabetically suggests the first tag that I already use beginning with 'f' (e.g. 'facebook'). When I continue typing, it automatically changes its suggestion, whilst still suggesting existing tags ( e.g. 'facebook', - 'free' - 'free' - 'french '). If 'french' is a tag I have not used before, it will stop making suggestions after I have typed 'frenc'. I then simply finish typing the word, and Bookmark Tags recognises it as a new tag. Using this kind of system, Diigo users can more efficiently create and retrieve both bookmarks and tags.

- Lack of means to contact the developers:
Last but not least, I am rather disconcerted by the fact that the users' only means of (perchance!) reaching the developers is through the Community Forum. I searched the entire site and was not able to find a single e-mail address for "User Support", "Helpline" or anything to that effect (instead, I found this info-email for people interested in "partnerships, investment, licensing, and career opportunities"). A more direct line of communication would benefit not only the users and the community, but also the developers and the program.

1. Lists. Could you tell me how to reproduce the bug? I can't reproduce it here.
2. Simultaneously adding a tag to multiple bookmarks: This feature was already implemented in diigo V3. You can use it soon.
3. Different versions of the same tag: What's browser you use? IE or FF? Diigo toolbar has a tag auto suggestion feature which works as you described. However, some users reported this feature didn't work recently. With the upcoming Diigo V3 toolbar, this problem can be fixed.

Hi Joel,

Lists - recreating the problem:
1) In My Diigo > My Bookmarks, click 'Create a List'. Name the list 'Test' (the rest is up to you). Then return to My Bookmarks.
2) Locate a bookmark that has two or more tags attached to it. Let's say it is called 'Fairtrade' and has been tagged 'shopping', 'politics' and 'educational'. Add Fairtrade to the Test list, using the drop-down 'Add to List ...' menu.
3) Once it has been "Added to List successfully!", take a look at Test by clicking on its link in the 'My Lists' box.
4) In Test, you will see that the main blue box is set to 'By position' and contains 'Fairtrade'. In the top-right corner of the blue box you will see "1-1 of 1". If you click on the 'By time' tab, you will see the same thing.
6) Return to My Bookmarks and find your 'My Tags' box. Click on the first tag associated with 'Fairtrade', in this case 'shopping'. This will show you all your bookmarks tagged 'shopping'.
7) Locate 'Fairtrade' and add it to Test using the drop-down menu again. Again, you will see a message saying it has been "Added to List successfully!".
8) Go My Bookmarks > Test. In the blue box, you will see that the 'By Position' tab still shows only one copy of 'Fairtrade', but the text in the top-right corner has changed to '1-2 of 2'. Click on the 'By time' tab and you will see Fairtrade has been added twice.
(If you repeat steps 6. - 8. for each of the other tags (i.e. 'politics' and 'educational'), then by the end, 'Fairtrade' will have been add to the 'By time' tab of Test a total of four times, and the text in the top-right corner of the blue box will read '1-4 of 4', even though it is all one and the same bookmark.)

Items duplicate in the "By Time" tab of Lists

Dear Diigo developers,

Thank-you for your work. So far, I have been very pleased with Diigo.
Until I began using Lists.

One of my favourite things about Diigo is that I never end up bookmarking the same site twice. If I have already bookmarked it, then this is shown on the Diigolet.

So I am extremely disappointed to find that, unlike the rest of the Diigo system, the Lists do not safeguard against having MULTIPLE COPIES of the SAME ITEM. When you add the same bookmark to a List twice, the List's item count goes up (eg. "Showing 1 of 1" - > "Showing 1 of 2"). And although that bookmark is shown only once under the "By Position" tab, it is shown multiple times under the "By Time" tab (once for each time you accidentally added it to that list)!

What is the purpose of this?! I certainly can think of none. For people such as myself, who use lists as a sort of "ordered checklist of sites to visit" on a given occasion, it does not help me make efficient use of my time - it WASTES it! I end up going to the same page twice, thrice, ... several times! Also, it causes the item count on my lists to grow incredibly daunting - even when I actually end up having few items. This makes me misjudge the amount of time needed, and affects my overall time-management! I would be very relieved and grateful for this bug/error to be fixed as soon as possible.

I agree. I have several lists and have plans for many more in the near future. The "My Lists" button would make it much easier to locate these lists.
It would also be helpful to be able to retrieve lists in the same manner you can retrieve tags in the toolbar.
