The old version of diigo toolbar in firefox supported hiding unwanted comments and highlight of other users. It is very useful since sometimes you are not want to be annoyed by some of other user's footprints. I remember the function is designed as let go of some of the group selected by you. And it worked quite well. I like it very much and it really help me to improve my reading efficiency.

So I strongly suggest to re-add this function in diigo toolbar. Thank you!

Q: Highlighting and privacy?

I was using diigo purely as a bookmarker, but i've recently discovered how useful the highlighting is (in particular with regard to notes to access from a mobile).

However I'm wondering about the privacy settings. When I highlight something it says "private highlight by soulgrind r", but even if i'm not logged in, those highlights show up under the "expand" link on my user page. That seems confusing to me, as they aren't really private (though i guess it refers to actually seeing the highlights "in page". )

Also, I'd like the default setting of HIGHLIGHTS (as opposed to bookmarks) to be private. If I bookmark a page, and tag it, etc.. then I probably am happy for it to be public (or at least I have the option to choose).

If I highlight something then its often just a reminder, or a quick bit of temporary information for me (how it get to a place, how to beat a level in a game, etc..).
So, ideally, I'd like to be able to set the default privacy for Bookmarks (tagged), Quick Bookmarks, AND Highlights (no_tag).

If I decide to tag it later then I'll probably make it a pubic bookmark, and its probably worth sharing.. but if it's "no_tag" then its probably not worth sharing (at least not yet).

Highlighter not working on mobile devices. Why?

Hi there,

I found out that the current "diigolets" do work on some mobile browsers (like Opera 8.65), but for some reason, the "highlight" feature does not work. My mobile diigolet shows "Bookmarks" and "Sticky note", but "Highlight" doesn´t even show.

I´m trying to use Diigo precisely to highlight and save web pages, and doing so from my mobile device would be tremendously useful.

Could anybody please tell me if there's any workaround for this? (I´ve tried this feature with several mobile devices, and none of them work). If the answer is no, are you expecting to make this feature available any time soon?

Sorry, not color change, but there are several highlighting style options.

Go to toolbar >> Options >> Bookmark tab >> Highlighting Style to set your preference.

Should there really be very strong demand for this feature, we may consider it as part of the premium features.

differ color option is really helpful if diigo launch this feature, since what we highlight might belong to different sorts. But I think this feature might course chaos if it goes to public. I think we can use it in private way.

I have been introduced by the diigo utility by accident and it is really a very good tool. I have also recommended to many colleagues and they all loved it.

However, here we all agree that different colors will be an incredible tool because we can have color codes :

for example :
yellow = action
green = question / notice
blue = pending
purple = read / review

and the list goes on depending on the needs.

It will be for sure very useful in a private way.
However, I strongly disagree that it will cause chaos if it goes to public. If you agree with your colleagues that specific colors mean specific things and you write down in a list, even print that list for each colleague, then it will enhance for sure the cooperation and the productivity.

I would also really appreciate being able to change the highlight color. Sometimes I want to highlight different parts for different reasons, and being able to differentiate without having to write sticky notes would be really useful.

Yep, more colors is a big one for me, as a student(computer programmer), as well.
I use different underlining and colors all of the time for things. Shouldn't be too difficult
to add those options since you already have the code in place.

Just wanted to add on here with some more thoughts--I think the most useful way to implement this would be to add a little square button next to the bookmark button, which would either show a color swatch or the name of the color you are highlighting with. the color you were highlighting with would be constant, until you clicked on this button to change it (either through a color palette or a box where you could enter the hex code), at which point it could stay that way until you changed it again. Of course, a color palette would be preferable for ease of use, since this feature is requested so that you can use multiple colors, not just change the default color.

You could have this button disabled by default for the beginner's mode of the toolbar, and if you feel it would cause chaos, you could make it so that the colors you chose are only visible on the client end--ie, everyone sees their own colors, no matter who highlighted it, and not the colors of the one doing the highlighting.

I find this whole idea to be much preferable to the scheme we have now, especially since all it takes is a mouseover to see who has made a note, whether it is public or private, and whether or what groups it is shared to.

how 'bout just having it flip out as an option on the context menu when you highlight something? (on 'highlight' an arrow is also present that you mouse to the color swatches). In the meantime I'm working on a work-around.

Ellen, I've got something that is 'sort of ' working for now. I didn't need to program anything actually.
There is a firefox extension that you can use for your private highlights called 'LineMarker'. It uses XML
(diigo developers, using XML would be an easy and fast way for you to implement this at least for now )

Just an additional comment, maybe something could be done about highlighting on text with dark backgrounds -- the current color scheme makes it difficult to see the highlighted text. Here's a sample screenshot (the comment has typo, argh!):

Highlighting a character could bring many other problems, such as all occurrences of the character will be highlighted.

BTW, maybe it's a good idea to study other languages though sentences.

Why on earth would all the occurrences of that character be highlighted? When I highlight a word, not all occurrences of that word are highlighted--why would a character be any different?

BTW, there was no need to be rude. And when you are learning a language, generally the meaning of words is what you are interested in--not learning wrote sentences for certain situations.

Finally, I second the suggestion to change the character limits on highlighting. I, too, have problems with the character limits on clippings--though mine are generally that I can't go over a certain limit, rather that under.

I don't know about the second question, but as to the first, I think I can help. Warning: I have not yet tried this with sticky notes, merely clipping text. You have to highlight and clip the smaller sections (inside the bigger section) first. After that, you just highlight the whole block. When you go to your my bookmarks page, you will see it as two separate clippings. Very useful!

Now that I think of it, if nothing else, you should be able to add sticky notes separately from your my bookmarks page. Or you can try adding the sticky note to the small bit before clipping the large bit and seeing if that works as well.

"Failed", Autocomplete, Highlighting gone

When clicking diigolet link, it tries to login, displays "Failed" and then says "welcome, manny c"

Also, when I highlight text, post comments &c none of this is saved when i return to the article

In addition, the tag autocomplete that used to appear when typing in tags via diigolet is not working anymore.

I presume these latter problems are because of failed authentication?

solved by clearing safari cookies, signing back in at diigo.com (sign in link on diigolet didn't work).

Diigolet has been quite buggy recently.

Sorry, it was not the "fault" of diigolet itself, but we had changed the configuration and didn't make the proper switch in time. It should be ok now.

It should auto-update itself. However, anyone with any problem, please just delete your diigolet and re drag and drop another one to your browser.

FF Toolbar: Highlight Button & Pop-up Menu Disappeared

Weirdness.

Here are the symptoms:

1. As soon as you select text, the highlight button greys itself out before you even get a chance to click it.
2. Not that you could click it.
3. Search for a tag and click the search highlight button, and then hit highlight, and it will highlight that. but highlighting selected text is completely impossible.
4. No popup menu anymore. Nada. when i select text, the popup menu doesnt work anymore. I miss it.
5. Can only highlight if I select text and hit the bookmarking button. over and over.

no new installs, nothing different. just stopped! I did reinstall it - no luck.

The highlight button works fine in IE7.

Opera diigolet - highlight problems

Yes, this is a slightly tricky problem in Diigolet. We have some thought on how to improve it - will add to our To-Do list. However, will not likely to be a high priority since its occurrence is not frequent.

Lars, I can reproduce your problem with both the Diigolet and the Diigo toolbar. So, it is obviously not restricted to the Diigolet.
I have never noticed this problem before because my highlights have always been longer and never occurred more than once in the texts.

However, it is not always the very first appearance of a marked word/text passage but the first appearance within text sections/paragraphs (the borders of which may be URL code related, I don't know).

Here are some examples:
1) http://www.hipcal.com Within the sentence "you can continue to use your HipCal calendar", highlight the word "HipCal". As a result, the word "HipCal" will be highlighted within the heading "Important update from the HipCal team".
2) http://www.grisoft.com/ Within the second paragraph of "News", highlight the word "Security". As a result, the word "Security" will be highlighted within the heading "AVG Internet Security Now Fully Protects Windows Vista". However, this is not the very first appearance of "Security", which you can find before under "Why AVG".
3) http://www.diigo.com Highlight the word "webpage" within the sentence "Interact on any webpage!". As a result, the word "webpage" will be highlighted within the sentence "Write on any webpage!" one line above.

BTW, I think it is always a good idea to give some specific examples when describing a problem/bug. This makes it easier for the people at Diigo to reproduce, locate and solve the problem.

Thanks for giving examples ollitolli. I get the same problems in firefox when I tried the links. So I guess you're right that it's not an Opera related problem.

Maggie,

I work for a website development company. We would love to use Diigo for our prototyping process as a way to easily communicate with our clients, but the highlighting issue is too large a problem for us to do so. I have run into the same problem as Lars has with this.

Because highlighting is one of Diigo's main features, this bug seems to indicate a core problem in how the software works. Please make this a higher priority in your to-do list. We look forward to using future Diigo releases in our company once these issues have been resolved.

Yes, prototyping website is a great application of Diigo.

Are you and your clients also use Opera exclusively? Have you ever tried out Diigo diigolet or toolbar in any other browser?

By the way, a brand new toolbar is coming soon (FF, IE & Flock) - it's going to be really awesome.

PS. Webslides will be another great way for a website development company to showcase their portfolio to potential clients or do quick guided tour on a subject ... Currently Webslides supports Firefox, IE, Flock and Opera 9.5 - check it out

Thanks for the quick response! No, we and our clients do not use Opera exclusively. Not much at all, actually.

I have tried both the Diigo diigolet and toolbar in IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.6. There are some fundamental problems across all three browsers mentioned:
1) The ability to highlight only the first instance of a repeated word/phrase (mentioned above in this thread)
2) Sticky notes not appearing in the same place on different browsers (see my post, Sticky note location in different browsers). This seems to be a problem with other applets out there, as well (e.g., Stickis).
3) A bit of difficulty permanently deleting comments...I haven't experimented with this one as thoroughly as the first two problems, though.

I don't think the issue that Ollitolli had earlier has been resolved yet.

Let's look at an example at the page he cited, http://www.grisoft.com. I'm using Firefox 2 and IE7 on Windows XP Professional, SP2. With both browsers, I'm using the Diigo toolbar.

In Firefox, I double-clicked last instance of "AVG" in the News section. This is in the sentence, "A one-year license for AVG Anti-Virus Professional 7.5 ...." When the Diigo box appeared, I selected "Highlight and Sticky note." I shared the comment (the text of the comment was "a") with "all groups listed" in order to allow my second Diigo account to have access to the highlight/sticky note.

Instead of highlighting this instance of "AVG," the "AVG" in the news title, "AVG Internet Security Products To Protect HP Gaming PC," was highlighted.

When I opened the page in IE7 under a different Diigo account, the "AVG" in the sentence "GRISOFT today announced that its award-winning AVG Internet security ..." was selected instead of the "AVG" I had originally intended to select in Firefox.

I have experimented with the highlighting functionality on other pages, too. This highlighting bug doesn't seem to be limited to one element. For example, highlighting a word/phrase in one can make the same word/phrase appear in another . The same is true for
s--highlighting/adding notes in one
can attach the highlight/note to text in another
.

highlight the wrong text

Not a helpful title, I know. But diigo has become less than helpful recently, so the title reflects that condition.

I have been using diigo for a few months to highlight phrases within a document I am editing. I work by reading the text and adding sticky notes as I go, then coming back for a second pass to make changes. Two months ago that system worked really well. But now diigo only highlights the text it wants to rather than the text I specify.

When I have a paragraph with two instances of a phrase, and want to bookmark/stickynote the second instance, diigo consistently highlights and bookmarks the first instance. I have not found a way to stop it from making this mistake.

For example, let's say I write 'New York City' twice in one paragraph, and decide that the second instance needs deleting. I want to add a sticky note to the 2nd instance that says 'delete this'. Two months ago I could do it, no trouble. Today, diigo ALWAYS chooses the first instance. That makes diigo useless. If I cannot bookmark/stickynote the phrase that needs work, why bother to use the service?

Any workarounds for this?

This very URL provides an example. (http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/837) I used the phrase 'sticky notes' twice in my message. I selected the 2nd instance and requested that diigo highlight and bookmark it. What's the result? It highlighted the 1st instance.

As for tags, one never knows how many are needed, so I use the method pioneered here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tetheredto/315058545/

I can always whittle the number down once I know the best tag to use.

Thanks for letting us know.

Just checked - we found out the problem -it's caused by the latest toolbar change that does numbering... We have some other issues to consider - will get them resolved soon.

Meanwhile, you can use Diigolet before the toolbar fix. (I really like the new Diigolet now - give it a try!)

Note: Diigo is undergoing very rapid changes now (a ton load of stuff are being worked on under the hood....) Thank you again for the prompt response. It's good to know that the change was accidental rather than deliberate. I hope to continue using diigo, looking forward to the fix.

I have just tried my existing Diigo toolbar with similar results: it highlighted the first instance, and won't let me make a sticky note at all. This is version 1.0.2007061900. So should I be downloading a new version, or doing something else?

Trying... have copied it to my browser toolbar, selected a bit of text, then sticky note. That works. But it won't let me use the highlight function. Is that the way it's meant to be?

The Diigolet functions in a different way to the toolbar? Can I highlight words and paragraphs with it?

yes you can highlight and add sticky note with diigolet.

After you drag and drop the new diigolet to your bookmark bar, go to any webpage, click Diigolet. A Diigolet menu will automatically appear.

Then, use your mouse to select a block of text, either you can use the "highlight" menu that pops up, or after you made the selection, click the "highlight" icon in the diigolet menu to highlight.

You can either add an in-situ sticky note, or a floating note not attached to any highlight via diigolet as well.

Okay, I think I'm going to have the original difficulty regardless of whether I use the toolbar, the diigolet, or the pop-up menu. None of them highlight the 2nd instance of a phrase, but all of them work okay with non-identical text. So I will just have to get by without the full functionality until you revise the software. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

I think this is an example of the same bug.

Go to

Scroll down a bit until you see "{type definition}" in the "Property" column.

Highlight the last bit of the corresponding paragraph, specifically
"otherwise the ·ur-type definition·."

You'll see a different "otherwise the" and "·" highlighted.

I'm using firefox and the toolbar 1.0.2007072200.

I'm getting the same problem. Nabolo's right--the bug happens with either the Diigolet or the Diigo toolbar.

My Clips Are Gone!!!

Recently I've faced the frustration knowing that a number of my highlights or clips are gone (from Diigo database?)! I need to describe this situation I'm facing as follows:

1. Quite a number of my clips, especially the old ones, simply disappear, leaving only the number(s) of the clips for each of my bookmark (the orange number that appears on the top right corner of each bookmark) and two features/commands/buttons that always appear at the bottom of each clip: 1. Add Sticky Note and 2. Remove. And that's all it shows to me; no content of the clips!

2. Some clips only show texts but not its accompanying images. Please understand that this happens after some time when I revisit the clips (a few months later) because by the time I clipped, Diigo could capture both texts and images.

3. In a rare case, Diigo would not completely capture the highlighted paragraphs.

4. Previously, my bookmarks and hightlights I just clipped would only appear after a few hours. This is acceptable, though. I guess this also still happens from time to time.

But the first item above really frustrates me and drives me to report this. I just want to know those disappearing clips could be restored and retrieved. I really want everything to get back to normal as I love Diigo. Please reply.

The way I see it, diigo only saves highlights for a constant URL. But many dynamic web applications add parameters to their URLs which are often only valuable for the server (sometimes as a replacement for cookies), but not for the client, because exactly the same content is returned.

To illustrate:
When we surf diigo's homepage, we discover the link
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-9239_7-6654999-1.html
On this page we underline the paragraph about diigo.
However, when we search CNET for the "Top ten research tools", the link suddenly is slightly modified:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-9239_7-6654999-1.html?tag=feat.1
We will discover that all our highlights have vanished, although it's still the same contents.

How can this problem be countered?
I suggest that every user gets the option to maintain a list of such links. I believe that Regular Expressions would be suitable, but too complicated for most and probably to difficult to implement.
I think it would suffice, if one simple writes the beginning of the URL and then lists parameters for in-/exclusion.

The status quo is:
for all "" method=exclude params="". // include every parameter except for 'none'

For the example URL, it could be like this:
for all "http://reviews.cnet.com/" method=include params="". // only include 'none' <=> exclude all <=> ignore all parameters

For a Google search with the following URL:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=diigo&btnG=Search
for all "http://www.google.com/search" method=include params="q". // only include parameter "q"

What do you think about that?

BTW, if a page is bookmarked, there will be a “red book” icon on the Diigo button. According this indicator, we can know whether the page is bookmarked before when we visit it. In your case, when you visit http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-9239_7-6654999-1.html?tag=feat.1, you will not see the "red book" icon on the diigo button, it indicates that you never bookmarked this page before. It may not a big problem for users.

outlook failed but also through their gmail account. Had to use alternastivr collaboration method , diigo is so great when it works , but designer getting short tempered.....
ALSO, FYI: when delleting highlights cursor apparently has to be in the exact same cursor page position as when the highlight was created, NOT just within the highlted area?????...... When is "later" for solving the forwarding problem? Any chance the screen appearance time of stickys is going to be speeded up? Also the sticky symbol does not always show up when choosing "highlight & sticky note" right mouse choice yet there is a sticky there.......

The diigo forward feature is mainly designed for scenaria in which people can share some texts easier. For the scenaria in your case, debugging is not enough and we may need some different solutions. Could you post your requirement in detail ? If enough users require the same feature, we will put it in a high priority to do list.

Highlights and bookmars disappearing

A couple of days ago I spent four hours searching and browsing the net, did some highlights and research, and so on.
Later I noticed, that no one of these bookmarks appeared in my Diigo. I had already such problems sometimes, but after some time, maybe a day, bookmarks was there.
But now new, fresh, bookmarks are seen, and those — aren`t.
Also I didn`t care very much then, because highlighted text was in my cache, or something, at least I could see it on those pages. But now all this also disappeared.
That`s the trouble.

===>This may due to some temp connection error. Diigo has a feature named "submit and forget". After you submit a bookmark, if it can't be saved due to the connection error or due to servers in maintenance /heave load, the Diigo toolbar will do it sometime later untill it is saved. But this shouldn't be a normal case. Please let me know directly when you find the problem again ( joel 【at 】 diigo dot com)

No, sorry for my rush, I haven`t seen it there.
The pages were marked on the toolbar ( the book was here: http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9843/diigojh3.jpg ), highlights were seen, but no one of them were in www.diigo.com/user/altergrin. And I was definitely logged in.

I had a similar problem - bookmarked pages would not appear in the bookmarks list. I did quite a few of them using Firefox toolbar.
Cannot replicate at this stage but will let you know when it happens again - but it's definitely something you should investigate further, guys!

I had this start to happen with FireFox, so I switched to Flock, which was fine. Now it's happening with Flock.

What happens is, I highlight the material, right click to get the Diigo menu, choose highlight and save, add my tags etc. and click submit and close. I look at the upper left corner of the browser where Diigo used to say something about saving the bookmark - but nothing is there. Nothing happens. The bookmarks do not appear in my Diigo store.

I have not found a way to get them to actually save the bookmarklet now. not sure why.

Latest version of Flock. Latest version of FireFox. Latest version of Diigo.

If you are using the toolbar, wheneve you bookmark or highlight, you should get a message in the upper left corner of your screen as to whether the submission is successful.

Along with new sticky note UI, we have also changed the following colors to our annotation notations:

New: Group annotation: now has its own color: pink #ffc4d8 / #990033

Changes:

Private highlight (yellow) - #ffff99
Private annotation (blue) - #abd5ff
Public annotation (green) - #b2e57e

The new color schemes are lighter than previous version. Like to have your feedback on whether you like the new changes or not, and if not, specifically what shades of color are good.

The new yellow is too light. After a while, it just blends in with the white and is hard on the eyes. A darker shade would be nice.

P.S. THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING RESEARCH TOOL EVER! I just love the highlight tool. I used to have dreams of creating an interface that would allow me manually highlight webpages, and you've done it. Keep it up.

Could somebody, e.g. Maggie, provide me a HTML example of how the code for Public Annotation (the green ones) looks like when a page gets rendered... I can't find a green annotation right now anywhere.

I need to know the whole HTML code for the layer-tag so i can identify them in my Stylish script, and that way be able to change the colors however i want... (Stylish is a Firefox extension...)

You can't insert html-code here, so if you just shoot me an URL that contains a green annotation. I have only been able to find the purple ones, i.e. group annotations...

ps. I tried creating a public annotation myself, but i can't because i have no friends (2 required). (And Diigo didn't let me make them even after i had invited and registered two of my imaginary friends.. smart Diigo...)

pps. Sure i will release the Stylish script, if it starts working. Nothing fancy though.

I think i got the Stylish script working now.
You can change the colors of highlights and annotations with it. (I'm only changing the background-color so it won't work with the underlining option in Diigo...)
You can specify a color for a specific user's highlights.
You can also specify the colors of the search-term-highlighting.

I think this colour-coded scheme is really misguided, as it is not based in any way on either:

1. the way people use multiple colours of highlighter on paper
2. any of our intuitions about what various colours 'mean'.

On paper and in Acrobat Professional, for many years i have used a system something like:

Yellow - generic highlight--something 'important'
Green - I Agree!
Red - I Disagree!
Orange - I find this dubious... (orange is 'close' to red qualitatively)
Ice Blue - I don't understand this, or I'll read it later (you're putting the passage 'on ice' for now)

this is the core of the system, and is what i advocate to others. I sometimes also use:
Pale Green - i'm *inclined* to agree
Pale Red - i'm *inclined* to disagree
Purple - this is really unusual/cool/exceptional
Black (with the inner text turned grey), or Grey - to visually mark 'structural' phrases such as "Firstly," or "My second point is as follows:"

I *don't* think that diigo shoudl force users to use one colour system, but shoudl allow them to control colours separately from the 'tag' applied to the annotation (i.e. agreement or disagreement)--i.e. certain highlight would enter diigo's system with the tag 'agreement' or 'disagreement' highlights, and the local user could control what colour highlights with the tag 'disgareement' highlights are displayed as, and if they change this setting, all of their previous disagreement highlights would change colour. This woudl be EXTREMELY useful as it would allow users to evolve their highlight system over time, as they discover what colour patterns aid the perceptual process of working with a document. (Note that tags shoudl be free-form as well, imo, a la many features of google, or how last.fm, the social music site, works.)

However, although no system of colorus should be imposed, one such as the one outlined above shoudl be configured by default for new users, as it is really the best way to use colour in the user experience.

PLEASE don't start using up colours for other purposes (such as pink for group annotation) while i am waiting patiently for you to implement multicolour highlight at the user's discretion for the sort of purposes i've just outlined here--half the point of highlight is to manipulate the salience of the page, so that later you can glance at the page and the pattern of colours in the highlight conveys aspects of the document to you the way a painting does, rather than having to read through every highlight and figure out why you highlighted it, etc.

Not to mention that, using colour both to indicate whether there is an annotation, and whether it's public or group or private is overloading colour too much, imo. Colour should be used for one purpose, and that is to demonstrate at a glance why the user highlighted it--this is how students have highlighted textbooks for years, because obviously there is no analogue to "group" or "public" highlighting on a paper text. Therefore, it's ill-advised to now attempt to use colour for and aspect of highlighting which didn't exist in the paper experience--indicate new aspects, such as public/group highlighting, with something *new*. I would suggest a small icon in the corner of the highlight, or pehraps just a pop-up when you mouse over the highlight, although come to think of it, if you really want to use colours for this purpose, you could make it fully customizble, so that a user could have public disagreement highlights as 'green' or whatever they want, and private agreement highlights as 'olive' or whatever.

However, default color schemes not only make it easy for us to implement (I'd imagine there might be some performance issues if we allow users to dynamically customize the display - performance is something critical that we are unwilling to compromise), it also applies some consistency throughout the site when one is viewing the public annotations. Without a default color scheme, it will also make explaining to the new users how our system works even a lot more complex. But still, thanks for bringing this up. We will discuss more in our team to see if there might be a better way of doing this.

Meanwhile, the new toolbar is up, and the highlight are shown in brighter sets of colors.

hi maggie, i think you misunderstand my suggestion. I suggested that:

1. highlights be of different types, including a 'normal' hihglight, and things like agreement or disagreement

2. there be a default colour for each highlight type

3. users be able to change the local mapping between colours and highlight types

So, when a user viewed public highlights, the default would be, for instance, that all public generic highlights are yellow, all public agreement highlights are green, etc. So even if user A highlighted a passage as 'agreement' and they had their agreement colour set to 'brown', if user B came a long and viewed user A's public highlight, the colour they woudl be see woudl be whatever they have set locally to be the colour for 'agreement' highlights, which would have a reasonable default which most users wouldn't touch. The display of public highlight would be very consitent this way, and in explaing it to new users, the distinction between the tag and the corresponding colour need not even be mentioned--just give them the defaults and perhaps mention briefly that they can change the default colour. I should say this clearly: it's not defaults that are the problem--defaults are *very good*--it's having *unalterable* defaults here. And i say this not just in worship of customizability for customizability's sake--this is a very real part of how people interact with paper documents, and the whole point of electronic annotation ought to be to offer *more* functionality than you have on paper, in every way possible, so that it's less of an uncomfortable trade-off.

You could simplify all this for the user int he following way:

1. by default, only one highlighting type is enabled, and by default it displays as yellow
2. factors such as whether the highlight is public or private, and whether there is a pop-up are NOT indicated by colour, but by other graphical elements, as in Acrobat Professional, for instance
3. users could turn on the 'meaningful colours' option or some such, which would add a few other highlighters to the toolbar, clearly indicated as 'agreement', 'disagreement', etc. and displayed int heir default colours
4. buried much deeper, in 'advanced options' could be the ability to change what colours the highlights display as. this option is less important if a good colour scheme is chosen in advance, but a bad colour scheme could easily displease exactly the sort of annotation-happy user to which this product ought to appeal

The basic idea is that tagging should be more fundamental than the colour of the highlight--at base, users are selecting a passage and identifying it as generically 'important', or 'dubious', or what have you. Then a local setting in the diigo toolbar controls which colours each tag is displayed in, and this would be set to a reasonable default, and most users would never need to touch it. moreover, new users would only be presented with a single highlighter which just tags things as generically 'important' (although of course other tags could be added using the existing interface). This would appeal to the casual users of diigo, as well as the intense annotators who would be the product's greatest proselytes.

as for performance, enlighter and gibeo both offer multicolour highlighting without being slow even on my archaic machine. enlighter's big downfall, other than it appears to be somewhat abandoned now, was that it didnt' allow the reassignment of the colours you have for each tagging category, and so the user documentation urged the user to think carefully about how the set up their colour scheme before they began highlight doccuments--not a good system, as no one wants to have to commit themselves to a system upfront like that--it's time consuming, and guaranteed to disappoint down the road whent he user gradually gets used to the annotation experience adn realizes they'd like to do it a slightly better way. having customizability here allows diigo to evolve to meet various user's needs without additional development.

the 'reassigning' of colours also wouldn't be any more performance intensive than having fixed multiple colours, if the colour reassignment required a reboot of the browser anyway.

Save or print with highlights and stickies visible

Hi ,

Diigo is a wonderful tool. Is there a way to print or save annotated webpages so that the stickies and highlights are visible? It seems that this would be a pretty common need for people using diigo for reserach, and who want to look at their work offline or on paper.

On a related note, any plans to put stickies and highlights in the cache? It's a real shame to lose annotations just because a webpage changes.

1) Extract (we will also further enhance more features here...)
2) Use search to pull out what you need, and use expand to display and print them
2) Export as CSV format

Annotation in cache - sometimes that will require more work - but it's on our agenda to discuss more here.

Ever since we added the new Video / Flash support, we notice it's causing some highlight display issues in the feed. We've temporarily turned it off while figuring out a better solution.

Also, due to some new features that are under development, there are also some other feed display issues that will require some codes changes - we'd also like to take the opportunity to solve it once for all.

Sorry for the temporary inconvenience / interruption - we're trying to make it better.

Many people must know about Google notebook. I think diigo is greater than Google notebook but has not a function that Google notebook already have. Here is the thing.

By using Google notebook, I can edit highlighted text easily and freely. But diigo is unable to edit highlighted text. I strongly suggest that diigo add edit feature on highlighted text. If this feature is added, maybe diigo will be the best bookmarking tool in technical sense.

Hi!

I agree, about there would be some improvement in Diigo similarly as made in Google Notebook=GNB. For example a draggable arranging of the highlights + making them collapsible and expandable and even the bookmarked pages order too. I put some topics of suggestion also regarding to it.

But, consider a difference of the funcionality of highlighting in GNB and Diigo.
Although, you are in right that the edit highlight feature is big in GNB, but i feel it functions as a contracted highlight and sticky two-in one.
As you can make it similarly with a + manipulation in DIIGO! Highlight any text in DIIGO copy that to the clipboard invoke a sticky, paste the higlighted text into the sticky and do any modification on the text with the rich text editing feature of the sticky.

suggestion: it would be at best improving to allow a + sticky action or putting a plus command to the floating right menu of diigo or diigo menu in the context menu when higlighting which picks up the higlighted text immediately to the sticky in one-step without + user action to copy&paste ( as it would be preferenced for example in the Adobe commenting system)

Actually, I also wish that there were a way to clip highlights that are unformatted. I'm still bouncing between Google Notebook, Diigo, Del.icio.us, and Google Bookmarks. They all have their strengths. I like the simplicity of the Google products. Some of these newer solutions seem to just make things sluggish. I mean how often do most researchers need to clip videos? I don't see the video clippers to be a large segment of web researchers...

1) We don't allow highlight editing now because otherwise the in-situ highlight won't match up properly. Considering the pros and cons, we think it's important to have the highlighting overlaying and showing up when viewing the original webpage.

if editing is really necessary now, you can always copy it into a in-situ sticky note to that highlight and edit it there for your own consumption.

Having said all that, we will have some alternative solution and pretty cool related features coming up (sorry, cannot reveal the details yet.) So Diigo is easily your best choice to stay with, IMHO :-) So, stay tuned!

2) JMresearch - do you know we offer "Copy - with or without format" in our content selection menu? that's a pretty handy feature - one that few realize but quite useful. Please give that a try.

Video clipping - different users have different needs, and research comes in various forms. For example, when a marketing person doing research, the ability to save and share this type of media becomes useful. Another example, I sometimes see some funny clips that I'd like to save and share with others :-) I'm the one that nags our team to get this feature implemented, haha!

Now we make that into an optional On / Off feature , it should not be disturb users' normal browsing activities. A new toolbar will soon be released that will allow you to tag your video clipping as well. Our goal is to make Diigo a very versatile platform / service that can be easily customizable to suit your needs.

Tthis had escaped from my detection until, owing to i was not curious about the editing highliight, much rather the dragging & collapse/expand feature which is really cool in GNB. And it would be really considered in the MyBookmarks Expanded view in Diigo.
In case of you had read my post #2 if the Copy command are allowed why not the Paste also would be? Although, it is also just an + opreration as a CTRL-V (Paste). It would be replaced by a more complex command copy+paste the highlighted text intu the sticky immediately under the right Diigo menu "Highlight & Sticky & Picp up the text" as I considered.

I can already copy with Firefox w/o formatting. What I actually wanted was for my highlights to not be styled when I go to the "expanded" view in My Bookmarks. In the end, I don't want styled text, I just want pure information w/o the original styling. does this make sense? I do trends research and copying the styles over just becomes visually distracting when studying what I've clipped over a given week.

To make it optional (styled or not) is probably doable (nearly anything is possible). Question is how much demand, and is it worthwhile our extra engineering effort. I'd imagine majority users don't mind (and in fact, desire) having the highlight styled as the original site, and this particular feature request is probably only for very small niche of users.

Just curious, would you and a segment of users be willing for pay a fee for this premium feature, and if so, what kind of fee structure would make sense to you all as users and for us to consider offering premium services? Not trying to put anyone on the spot here, but rather to collect some marketing data for us...
