Editing tags on group posts

I'd like to suggest letting people edit tags on group posts other people have made. This would really make it easier to categorize posts, especially as most people just seem to leave it on no_tag.

If abuse is a problem, you could always make it a privilege for a certain few, such as the most active in a forum. But I don't think it would be.

Overwriting Forum Topics

I posted a reply to a forum topic that was already started, and my post overwrote the original post. Also, for that post, I assumed the identity (the username and the avatar) of the original person who posted the question. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I think what you're referring to is unique for a group owner only See a group owner has the right to edit and modify any post. So what you need to do is to click "Reply" and that will open up a new input window, but not '"Edit" --> which you will end up re-writing that post.

I accidentally made that mistake once in a long while. So you just need to be aware of how the system works and be careful not to make the same mistake :-)

I have three questions:

1. How can I search this forum? I wanted to ask the other questions, but search before it, but how?
This should be better visible!

2. I want to change my username, is(n't) this possible? (Can I use and "-" instead of an "_"?)

3. I want to have the URL & the title of the bookmarks changed @ the Diigo bookmarking assistant!
I often change the title (especially when there is only the URL instead of a title) and then I got the error message of course because I often mix it up. So why not having 1. the title and 2. the URL as normal? ;-)

Yes - full text search of forum forthcoming... Meanwhile, see http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/579 (Note: full text search of group bookmarks now available. (under more options in search)

There is no setting for allow you to do the username change yourself. It will need to be done manually by us in the backend. Let us know, but only when it's really, really essential to get changed...

You can change the title of each bookmark by going to each bookmark, and move your mouse over in "blank space" on the right-hand side -- > you will see a bunch of functions show up -- > click "edit" to edit the title.

However, we don't allow editing of URL for the following reason: although allowing changing URL is very simple, because of Diigo's unique ability to annotate on webpages and those are specific to URLs, offering the options to allow users to edit the URL will potentially lead to unexpected complication.

As we transition to tagging (very soon), that will also make it easy for you to pull up the keywords / topics.

Diigo tool bar itself is a great tool to do this:
1. mark whatever you want to full-text-search. For example [How to search Diigo group forum?]
Or mark anything instead, you can modify it and search again later.
2. Right click on your mark. (if necessary, up to your Diigo toolbar settings)
3. In the right click popup, a Diigo feature [Search bookmark for "How to search D..."]
4. submenu : Current Site
5. submenu : Google, Yahoo, MSN, ... <===== They all work !!
6. Modify the input for a more precisely search to improve your search results.

It would be practical to be able to follow up on exactly what we are looking for, so I suggest you make a short set of default categories for forum posts (in addition to the freetagging line), so that we also ensure that all get filed under either "feature" or "feature request", not some here and some there (similarly: "bug" or "bug report".).

Then make that a single-select, and give it a column in the forum overview, plus a way to select/filter so we only get a list of for example "feature requests". When viewing, it should be possible to click on "next" and "previous" to get move between those within that category.

Technically speaking, we are really talking about two beasts here: forum and "issue tracker". That is a practical separation, I think. Here you only have a partially working forum feature right now, and no issue tracking (at least not available to users).

So I suggest taking a look at how it is set up at Drupal.org:
Example taken from the issue tracker at Drupal.org:
(see http://drupal.org/project/issues/flickr , for example):

Categories: bug report, task, feature request, support request
Priority options: critical, normal, minor
Status options: active, fixed, wont fix, by design, closed, postponed

(Hm, I wonder if it would be practical for you to even consider integrating Drupal CMS here, then all such things would be readily available and you could concentrate on the development of the core Diigo community features.)

However, it would be great just to be able to select a default category per post, even with no issue tracking features: simply a drop down that we can choose either bug, feature, task, support or "open discussion" etc. from. And a way to filter on each of those.

Thanks for the post - agree that for a general site user forum, it'd be very desirable to have features as you suggested...

Please do note that this diigo group forum is "generic" and used in all of our group forums. Its primary purpose is not for bug / issues tracking, but rather a place for a group discussion (Diigo group forums can be structured with either tag or category... http://blog.diigo.com/2007/04/05/diigo-group-forums-is-here/) - so while the CMS suggested here is quite feature-rich, is that an overkill for most group forums?

Back to your post, we do use a similar system internally for bug tracking, so we do see the value of what you're suggesting here. So, I suppose the question is that should we or do we really need to consider offering a completely offtheshelves CMS system - for just the Diigo site user forum or for all Diigo group forums?

Although understanding the benefits of such feature-rich forums would bring, we still hesitate to throw a stand-along forum out as it is, since we have a lot more plans for the groups and everything requires tight integration.

Also, as you rightly point out, our efforts should be focused on the core Diigo platform features... afterall, user forum is a great "help" but not quite the core of Diigo - this wont' be the key contribution of user adoption. So, we must carefully balance out the nice-to-have wishlists vs. mission critical must-have's.

Cannot go into details of all our considerations here, but I think there are several things that can improve the userabilty of current forum:

A) here is a tip for searching http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/579.

B) two additional solutions will be available soon: 1) full text search that coupled with the existing tagging, 2) I will keep this one unwrapped for now :-)

I miss the old Diigo forums for at least one reason: There seems to be no way to do a full-text search of previous topics in Diigo forum! Maybe I missed it, but otherwise it's a step in the wrong direction IMHO--to rely only on tags for finding past posts.

On the bright side, the Email Notification feature is a beautiful thing!

By the way, it strikes me as funny that the "right" tags for this post are just about identical to the subject line. What's my point? I don't know. It's Friday.

As already mentioned the full-text searching is a feature to come. But for now, you could use this workaround:

1) Go to the Google homepage (http://www.google.com/ or your country's local version of Google)
2) Then use the following syntax to perform a full-text search in the new Diigo forum:
[enter search term here] site:http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/
For example: full-text site:http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/
This should find all pages with the term "full-text" in them.

Of course, you need to consider the inevitable delay that is caused by the time it takes till Google has indexed all newly added discussions/thread in the Diigo forum.

Inserting hyperlinks into forum posts is already possible as you can see for example here and here. But it requires using HTML code, so it is not very convenient.

And text formatting is possible too by using HTML code. Of course, rich text editing similar to the way it can be done within sticky notes would be better.

HI again, when this reply i had started I couldn't see yet the resolution. It would had been a really 'magick' although i haven't sent yet the reply in.situ i noticed the resolution. It would had happened also i was frightfully absent during the reading!

I meant, as ollitolli said above - allowing the reach text editing in adding a new forum post or replying to a forum post would be easier and better!

Would it be solved somehow?

Although my question seems to be scary, there i a little reason for putting it!
I'm a little familiar with the difference of goal of using a ticket sytem used for helpdesk and forum. I understand too, a normal forum thread not same as a ticket thread.
But, in connection with my ealier question about DiigoLab

If there is no strict distinguished possibility to handle a general discussion and the technical problems which latter would be solved by a tickect sytem feature which enable to close a thread when it is solved...the forum may become increasingly unembraceable as the topics grow.

suggestion: Probably, it would be applied a coloured or not or combo-dropdown + information field named 'ToDo' or 'Tasks' (chooseable: unanswered yet, hanging, on ToDo, solved...) put on to the forum header.

It can be also coupled with to help and improve the perspicuity of threading

We have an internal tracking system for feature / bugs, etc, but not in a forum env't. Will discuss more here.

However, while this is a very desirable feature, we need to carefully juggle our development priorities, given our limited resources. Do we spend our time on mission-critical features development, vs. a desirable enhancement but much less direct impact to Diigo growth? Good challenge to us :-)

My programmer mind went a little far, I understand your concepts.
Even so if you have sufficient capacity for it your system may be really more refined and truly in profession of using the best abilitiies of (Aadobe & Google NoteBook. etc) combined in one!

Sorting/ filtering the forum by author and/or author's last post

Hi!

Altough the group bookmarks may be filtered by the author, the forum post order can only be filtered by tags or category. In the forum view one can't see for example the joined user only the tags, also in the group bookmarks view one can't see the tags.

suggestion:
+ Could it be both the group bookmarks and forum posts filtered by both tags or category and user/author, too? Putting both the tagcloud and userscloud displayed.
+ Or at least in the forum view the forum topics could it be sorted somehow by user/author?
+ Somehow the Last Posts also filtered or sorted by a choosen author name?

This latter one would be quite impoving to ease following one's review his/her posted new or/and related topics.
For example i'm mainting now to follow my running new and related topics at Diigo in a local text file which is a little miserable to copy and paste topics headers & links....:(

suggestion: The ranking sytem would be allowed both for the user and censured over by the owner setting the priority order based on using a little examine pop-up window hovering the mouse over a topic's head which can bring forth the content of the topic without opening that. Both the ranking sytem and the pop-up would be useful overviewing of listed topics both for the owner and the group members before reacting.
