Cached pages with annotations?

It basically treats the cached page as a 'new' page.

Obviously, this defeats half the reason for having a cached version of a page. Is there any way that this can be fixed? I can't imagine it being too difficult, as the page is essentially identical, barring the URL...

fixing this would really make my day...
post by hilcoblok on 2008-09-29

Yes, I'm interested in such a feature as well. What I'd like is any way to share a page + all my annotations (highlighted sections) with someone else who does not use Diigo.
There is a website called Sharedcopy which has a similar function, you can see an example of how it works here: http://www.okfn.org.sharedcopy.com/wiki/f7e42dec6c6fc9217aa525868d9e18a9.html#shcp0
However the interface and other features are not as robust as Diigo, so it would be great to find a way to do this using Diigo.

Hilco Blok wrote:
> I've been messing around with the cache function and noticed that while diigo DOES cache pages, it does NOT show the annotations and comments. One nice thing about it is that they seem to be able to annotate pages that Diigo cannot. Some secured pages don't get captured and annotated by Diigo (I guess because the Diigo page grabber does not have access), but SharedCopy seems to work ok with the same sites. Maybe it pulls the page from the machines cache or something...not sure.

I would add a vote for annotated cached copies as well.

sean

Mike Chelen wrote:
> Yes, I'm interested in such a feature as well. The link you get when you click annotated link is a www.diigo.com link.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the page itself is stored on the diigo server.
Malfunction in caching?

I wonder if this is occuring only to me.
post by suikadorobo on 2007-11-25

No - it's not malfunction..

We're currently doing cache server /database migration in the backend for the next version. I have spent a long time looking at all the social BM'ing options, if everything were working, you have a very strong service.

But, everything does not work. One of the most important features, caching, has been broken for going on two months, with no indication of when it might be fixed. A full text search for "internet" across all member's bookmarks, unbelievably, returns zero results.

Why are you developing v3 beta when v2 is still in beta (but given the above it feels more like alpha). You are asking users to make a significant investment of their time by putting all their data on your site, but we as users must feel we can trust you with that data, or we won't bother. Allowing xml exports goes some way (but even this doesn't allow exporting the cached page). How many users are you turning away daily by breaking promises of certain features that they read about when signing up?

Your relatively low standing according to Alexa (which surprises me considering the features) amongst social BM'ing makes me worried about your future, all the more reason to allow proper export of data, to reduce my risk only to change over costs should you go bust, not data loss.

Should I continue to use your service? Are you a serious company?

Regards,
Fullness

Edit:
P.S. I just want to make it clear that I really, really want you to fix these problems. I wouldn't have bothered with such a long post if I didn't think you had a service with excellent potential.

lucite wrote:
> maggie_diigo wrote:
> >Don't worry. all pages will be cached soon.
>
> Any update on this - it's been over 1 month and it still doesn't seem like cache is working.
>
> Thanks
post by fullness on 2008-01-07

Hi fullness,
I am sorry some features in V2 is not stable enough, that's why we are developing V3 which is much stable than V2.
I checked my cache. Please let me know if you want to try out the V3.
post by joel on 2008-01-10

^ That's awesome ! :)

You guys rock. When the problem happened I started looking around at what other services/sites offered and I have to say that every time I thought: Diigo is better. Your interface and your features are just better. And I'm saying this as a die-hard Google user for other types of services. If I stick with Diigo over the benefits that Notebook integration has for me, it's really that I think your service is THAT much better!

I'd love to try v3 to see what else you've got in store for us :)
post by lucite on 2008-01-10

joel,
> I checked my cache. It works fine on V3, but it doesn't work on V2. Don't worry, your data is safe. ...

No, it's NOT always safe. I have checked the cached pages of my own as well, and have found out that many of the pages I bookmarked during the late November through the early December were not cached as expected. Go to my page and try viewing the cache for
http://www.asahi.com/paper/editorial20071121.html
for example. It says "the requested page is no longer available", which clearly shows that THE SOURCE PAGE HAD EXPIRED BEFORE DIIGO RESTARTED CACHING. Sticky notes for such pages have nothing left to "stick" to; likewise, highlighted texts are nothing more than odrinary comments now that they aren't associated to any particular portions of the original document. Things will be nearly the same for those pages which were modified during the downtime.

I am not asking you to recover such info now, since I know it's too late for anyone to do that. I just want you to make clear when your system's caching feature went down and when it was recovered, and let all the users (including ones who haven't tried V3 yet) know that their bookmarks created within that period may have lost part of their info.
post by suikadorobo on 2008-01-11

Cache pages on www.diigo.com is back now.
post by joel on 2008-01-11

Suikadorobo:
I am sorry for what happened to you. But before you do it - do I lose any data? This is very important when capturing newspaper articles since many papers make their current daily online available to the general public but limit access to back issues. If Diigo does not capture the page, having an option to do so, even if it's on the local hard drive, would be very useful.
post by swampy on 2007-08-30

Hi swampy,

Yes, all these data you mentioned persist, i.e. they will still be available even if the original web page has been deleted and is now inaccessible. I think that you people behind Diigo must understand that if you are demanded for better caching or anything else, it is because your product is better and we, the users, realize that things that other service can do very well must be implemented on Diigo, so we can make it the only tool we use to online research. This is a serious issue, I think, for researchers and anyone else who seriously uses the service.

Anything on the horizon in the way of an 'export' feature that will capture bookmarks, highlights, comments, everything, and let me save to my hard drive?

jeffreyjflim wrote:
> I would be interested (as an actual, real life user of the service) to be given an honest (and technically accurate) answer here - it isnt the best of impressions when a service drops your data..
post by davido on 2007-07-22

my solution to this problem (and i've definitely noticed it too) is to use Simultaneous Bookmark to Furl (and any other service you like). I just tested whether comments and
notes are already included in full-text searches and they actually are.
So, that can't be the advantage.

> Also, a couple of pages didn't cache: is there ever a delay? will they
> be cached eventually? If not, is there a way pages can be 're-cached'?

Here are two relevant threads:

Thread "Full Text Search doesn't work":
http://forum.diigo.com/topic/350#1216

Core message: There may a delay sometimes but it should be short. But I do not know the answer
to your question because I am just a Diigo user myself. Unless you have
put a lot of work into the page by higlighting sections and adding
comments/notes, you could try to delete that page from your personal
bookmark collection and add it again. Maybe that helps.
post by maggie_diigo on 2007-04-11

John,

Thanks for your input. Will consider offering that option. Meanwhile, try clicking on the "about" link for each bookmark - you will see lots of related stuff all nicely presented there.

Caching normally shouldn't take too long, but once in a while our servers get quite busy and some delay may occur. Also, once in a while, certain few pages have somewhat strange behaviors and are not being properly cached - we're looking into that as we're further optimizing our search capability now.
post by maggie_diigo on 2007-04-11

maggie_diigo wrote:
> John,
>
> Thanks for your input. Otherwise... what's the point of the cache?
