Well, you could be a little more elaborate with your questions or requests.

Anyway, I suppose what you mean is whether or how bookmarks (favorites) can be imported from Internet Explorer.

Importing bookmarks from Internet Explorer (IE) is possible in two ways:

1) If you don't have the Diigo toolbar for IE installed, you can export your favorites from IE as a bookmark.htm file (which is an older Netscape/Firefox format). Then, in Diigo go to "Import bookmarks" - > "Import from browser" and select the exported file for import.

2) If you have the Diigo toolbar for IE, it is even easier: In the toolbar, click on the Diigo button, in the appearing drop-down menu click on "Import Bookmarks ...", then just select all the favorites/bookmarks that you would like to import into Diigo and confirm. That's it.

Killer Feature Request: Import RSS Feeds as Bookmarks

Diigo is fantastic, but I wish Diigo could automatically "bookmark" (import rss feeds) my latest shared items from Google Reader, favorite YouTube videos, StumbleUpon items, etc. Then I wouldn't need FriendFeed and I would benefit from being able to tag and share those items just like I can with my regular Diigo bookmarks!

Down the road, it would be cool to have automatic semantic tagging of the bookmarked/imported content like Twine.com.

Could not agree more Matthew. I think this would be a killer feature for any bookmark service...

that said, I would hope that this functionality might be limited to a "pro" account. Spammers would have a field day with this easy method to dump links into a service like Diigo.

idea: "like last bookmark" button

I've just been adding a number of bookmarks, all of which are very similar topics, so using very similar tags and options. But every time i add one i have to type in all the tags and select the list, and other options.
(well, actually i soon figured out to copy and past the list of tags)

So, I was wondering, how about a little button on the "add bookmark" popup that repeats all the options, tags, etc.. of the last bookmark?

That way, if i'm adding a load of similar bookmarks at the same time (a likely scenario i'd think) I coudl just:
Click "add bookmark", click "as last bookmark", (optionally make any changes), and click "submit".

Just a thought.

Sounds like a great idea. I absolutely agree that this would be a very useful feature.

New bookmarks not being added within Firefox

I have FF set up so that my Diigo tags show in the sidebar when I hit ctrl-b.

It used to be that if I created a new tag/bookmark it would be automatically added within FF. Now they're not. I can still see all my old tags/bookmarks in the sidebar, but to access any new ones I need to go to the online list on the Diigo site.

How can I get Diigo and FF to synchronize like they used to?

My bookmark descriptions are all being cut off since the upgrade. This was never a problem before. No matter how many times I go back and correct the problem, it reappears. When you go to read the descriptions within a group, they are also being cut off mid-sentence!

I downloaded a newer version of the toolbar than I had and the button to search bookmarks from the toolbar is gone. Where did it go? it wasn't called search, I tried that one & it just searches, the one I am talking about is similar to the new (I guess) sidebar feature but it did the same thing in the toolbar. select a tag and it gave a list of those sites. Just wondering if was removed or what and if so can you put it back. I used it a lot.

Two issues:
1) On the "my book marks" page, the search box shows up only after quite a lag. THis is really confusing as you load up that page and you dont see the search box. Then it suddenly shows up!
2) Once it shows up if you enter a tag in it you see the drop down with dynamic suggestions show up. If you scroll down using your keyboard to one of these dynamic options and press enter, it does not auto fill the search box with what you selected but just goes ahead and searches with the partial text you entered.

I saw that some delay in importing bookmarks via HTML is to be expected but I was wondering what was the typical delay. I sent in the request about 24 hours ago. Did something go wrong and should I resubmit it, or is this not unusual?

Absolutely. It definitely shouldn't take that long. That is not normal. Something probably went wrong. Since Diigo prevents duplicate bookmarks, there is nothing to worry about when you resubmit.

I'm having the same problem. I exported from Flock browser as a HTML bookmark list. But cannot find anywhere on Diigo whether it even accepts HTML. Also, the Import form the Diigo toolbar doesn't recognize Flock bookmarks. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Well i have a work around... I imported my bookmarks/favorites into Firefox, then imported into Diigo via the toolbar, but it didn't keep the folder structure, so there will be hours and hours of organizing. Please let me know if there is a way to maintain the folder structure on import.

I am just a Diigo user myself, so I can't tell whether there are currently any technical problems.

Right now, I can't test Diigo but when I am back home I could try to reproduce your problem. It would help if you could tell me which web browser you use (including the version number).

Another thing: You probably tried to import your bookmarks in HTML format via the web interface.
Have you already tried to import your bookmarks with the Diigo toolbar?
If you don't like to permanently install the toolbar, you could use a portable version of Mozilla Firefox and install it there. It works with the portable version, too.
I know this would not be a solution to the original problem but it might do as a workaround for now.

I'm using FF 3.0.

You right about trying to import using the web interface and HTML, and I actually like the tool bar. The only problem is the import function toolbar only seems to be set up to import browser bookmarks. I'm just trying to bring in about 50 bookmarks I have in del.icio.us as a test run before I bring in about 500 from my browser.

Privacy for bookmarks and privacy for lists are separate things. One is independent from the other. Your bookmarks will always keep their privacy setting that you chose when you created (or imported) them. If a bookmark was public before, it will still be public when being saved to a private list. If a bookmark was private before, it will still be private when being saved to a private list. So, a private list can contain both private *and* public bookmarks, yet the list as a whole will remain private. In a list, you cannot see the privacy setting for bookmarks because the privacy setting applies to the list as a whole (but as individual bookmarks, public bookmarks will remain public as already mentioned above).

Hi there,

I've only just discovered diigo after spending years using a hybrid of:
Furl - for the cache, full-text search
del.icio.us - better functionality than furl, but no cache and a bit illogical at times
Digg - social, quirly stories, tech
Publish2 - a new bookmarking service for journalists (private beta atm)
Google Bookmarks - conveniently in toolbar
Google Notebook - for organising clippings and research for work (I edit a magazine, so I need to co-ordinate sections within sections within sections from web and email info).

You can see that managing online info is complicated to say the least. After just a day of using diigo, it looks like all my problems are solved.

I'm so impressed that I'm pretty close to ditching all of the above services in favour of diigo, but there is one function that diigo needs to add before I can dump Google Notebook and use it for professional workflow as well.

I think "My Lists" is a great idea, as is being able to create sections within each list. But I really need to create sections within sections (within sections, etc.)

Example: The are about 20 sections in each issue of our mag. Within each section, there is probably at least 10 sub sections (different stories, background research on people within each story, multimedia, website-related content, the trail of email admin for all of this, and so on).

I really need to be able to create as many folders/sections inside folders/sections as I need. And to be able to collapse/expand these as required and even move the order around, so I can go straight to the exact section I'm working on. Google Notebook does this, but it is quite rudimentary in terms of layout.

I'd love to see this feature added to Diigo. It's so close to perfect already. :-)

Thanks for getting back to me.

Links to other lists inside lists isn't that helpful. I'll end up with complete chaos in my link section and having to negotiate a real web of links to access relevant information.

If you haven't already, I urge you to look at the way Google Notebook works, in terms of being able to organise sections within sections and being able to expand or collapse them as required. Essentially, it's the way Windows folders work (tree hierarchy structure). I realise this is somewhat conventional in terms of "cloud" computing, but it is the most effective way to organise digital information into projects and sub-projects (and sub-sub-projects). Then you can always cross-search and associate via tags, etc.

Anyway, I'd love to see this function added. It looks like you already have the pieces in place, as you have expand and collapse options in the bookmarks section.

Forgive my newbieness but I didn't know a new release was near. When is it due for release?

PS - I discovered diigo on a few forums. I went googling for alternatives to furl and del.icio.us - looking for a bookmarking service that is both user-friendly and cache saving and full-text search. Can't believe you guys have been around for a couple of years and I had no idea.

"Unread" Bookmarks: Improved handling please!

Hello,

I really enjoy using the "unread" feature of Diigo - bookmarking something to check out later is one of my primary uses of bookmarks. However, I think this feature could be more cleanly handled. I have two suggestions that I feel would make this feature even more useful:

1) Toolbar improvement: Add a "Next Unread" button to the toolbar, preferably as a primary button or else as a link in the Diigo menu. Bonus points: If there are no more unread bookmarks, this could change to "Next Recommended". :) (or to put it a different way: right now the toolbar is very focused on bookmarking pages, it would be good to see a little focus on finding and reading bookmarks.)

2) Option to not share unread bookmarks: If this option is selected, then bookmarks won't show up in my public or friend bookmarks until they have been marked as read. Often I bookmark something just to check it out, and after reading it decide to delete the bookmark. This way, it never 'makes it to the surface' until I think it is good enough.

Even without this, Diigo is still a fantastic application in all regards. Thanks!!

Same for me. Even though Diigo supports a read/unread flag, I'm using the "ReadItLater" AddOn for Firefox because the handling in Diigo is too hidden. I'd like to have a "ReadItLater" button integrated in the Diigo toolbar, and also a tab for the unread bookmarks in the Diigo sidebar.

Otherwise, yes, Diigo is great.

I was just told that unread bookmarks are actually available via the Diigo menu. But I still find it confusing that they are missing in the sidebar and the Diigo toolbar button. Also, the "next unread" button in the toolbar would be handy.

You can access unread bookmark in Diigo top menu button ( the one between Bookmarks and Tools ). However, we will add an unread button on the toolbar according to the suggestion you and Chris made.

we are using Diigo in our enterprise, and we bookmark a lot of websites! but we have a lot of "dublons" (that is to say sometimes I bookmark a page already bookmarked by another member of my company).

Do you you if It's possible to be averted when a website is already bookmarked?? I'll be glad to know how you deal with this ? Glad to get some tips or advices! I'll be easier to manage our bookmarks

1 bug and 1 feature request - searching user's bookmarks

1. I guess it is standard to have search not case sensitive. And it is generally not.
Search Google with FileNameFixer, bookmark the page and try finding it with Diigo search. It finds the bookmark all right. Try renaming F with lowercase f. It fails to find the same bookmark. Try same with another F>f. It seems also to be case-sensitive. Try R>r. Works fine. This seems like a bug.
2. It is a standard that a search engine comes up with the result and also fills in the search field prompting the user for editing search query. That is how Google and other search engines do that. Please implement in Diigo.

BUMB. I agree.
the searchfunction related to e.g. diigo toolbar seems flawed as it doesn't report any instance of a "keyword" e.g. ToolKit whatever the upper- or lowercase spelling of the word in related bookmarks.

I image there's no "copy bookmark" button on search results because of bad tagging... or is there any other reason?
But still, could there not be a "copy" button.. with - I don't know - if tags are the problem : an obligation to input tags or something? with the possibility to batch copy ?
I often come across search results where I know the websites - but I had forgotten about them.
If i want it, I have to open the page ... bookmark, enter tags+description ... even if the bookmark I was in front of my eyes in the search result !

+Could this not be a good feature to fight spam ? ( instead of removing spam, increasing the amount of non-spam bookmarks ... or would spammers create multiple account and copy from themselves? )

I've tried a couple times importing my Ma.gnolia bookmarks, but everytime without any result.

I get the status of the import action, but it never goes father then the first bar you immediatly see.

after 10-15 minutes, I get a refresh of the page & I just see my bookmarks on diigo.

Is this a known issue ?

Is it because I want to import around 2000 bookmarks ?

is their another way to get my ma.gnolia bookmarks in here ?

Ma.gnolia.com may change its API.
You can work around by
1) Export ma.gnolia.com bookmarks and import them to your FF/IE
2) Go to Diigo toolar ===>Diigo button ===> Import my bookmarks.

I tried that, but it doesn't import bookmark tags in Firefox, neither IE.

now I have an html file, outputted from ma.gnolia that contains those tags

. Is there a way to directly get those bookmarks with tags into it.

I usually give +7 tags for each bookmark.

I really like this concept & site, but as long as I don't get all my hard work in it, I'll hardly use it.
One of the main advantages of this platform is that it simultaneously let's you save a bookmark to diig & magnolia. This really made me choose to try it out.

I just wanted to voice the statement that I desperately need my ma.gnolia info imported into diigo for there to be any real thought of switching services, I like the look of what you have done, however if I can't import I'll just continue to use what I have. I just sent an email on the Contact Page to the same effect, PLEASE FIX IMPORTING. Why for several days now there has been a "temporarily unavailable because of a problem with the delicious api" on the import page I don't know.

If you failed to import ma.gnolia.com bookmarks though API, you can do the following steps:
1) Export Ma.gnolia.com bookmarks to a file
2) Upload the file at the bottom part of this page http://www.diigo.com/tools/import_all

if you're talking about the plain 'export magnolia bookmarks' link on magnolia, then it would leave me with no tags and privacy settings, so that's not an option.

Just FYI: the import seems to have problems with " Perhaps some other entities too.

Joel, not anymore, but the " was in the title, I believe, not in the URL. And it was imported with " instead of ". So I'd guess any bookmark with " in title should do for reproducing.

I am wondering...if a new user signs up for my group, and they go to bookmark a page that has already been bookmarked, will the icon turn red like it does on the individual bookmarking basis? Or will the dialog box that opens indicate that someone in the group has already bookmarked the resource?

How do we tell, surely this must be a feature.

I knew to look for this from my own personal bookmarking, and I tried to reproduce this earlier in the day, but must have not seen it. I can reproduce it now.

Hi,

Among the many good Diigo features is the red icon that lets you know the page you are visiting is in your list somewhere.

Would it be possible to have perhaps one or more coloured options?
Like green perhaps for bookmarks that you have but are kept private.
Yellow for dead link. etc.

And your real name is what shows up--your screen name, I guess, in messages and such. Mostly, anyway.
