this video shows the black perspective of the black innercity. It almost gives their perspective to why they commit certain crimes or their mentality when doing certain things.
lol yea mojiti is kind of difficult to use. I like the selection. It raises several questions about race. The biggest thing for me was trying o decipher the different messges the group was trying to send. Should people feel bad for the individuals in situations similar to the girl in the video? Is her socioeconomic status being presented as a hindrance or a crutch? As te song progresses, the emphasis shifts towards the latter.
This is a really good video full of racial stereotypes, mainly negative ones about Blacks. I like how the song presents the problem/situation, provides possible ways to improve the situation, and makes it a little more hopeful. You might also want to consider how the attire, attitude, and location of the singers contribute to the message being sent. Are they examples of people who have successfully escaped that lifestyle? Are they examples of how other people can help those in this type of horrible situation? Good job though!
This should be an interesting essay because it seems to deal a lot with how this white rapper is viewed by others and by his black associates. I've always wondered how that goes over, like if he would be accepted if he was really good or something like that.
I think, in contrast to my video, this is a White man who has successfully adopted the culture/style of another race. You can probably mention the emphasis on the chains, his grill, the pimped out cars, etc. to show how this video perpetuates stereotypes of Blacks. Also, the women in the video are objectified and shown as symbols of sex and success. Paul Wall appears to have gained the respect of the Black people, including the more famous/successful ones.
I changed my video because I went to his concert (near Tommy Trojan) on Thursday and it reminded me of this song by Talib Kweli I used to listen to constantly. I think it has more meaning and more images to go off of. -- Alex
I really like Talib Kweli, and this is one of my favorite songs. The video accurately portrays the message of overcoming adversity that he writes about in this song.
Here is the original version (not chopped & screwed) of "Icy" by Gucci Mane. A good beat and catchy chorus, but when you listen to the content of the lyrics it is pretty bad.
Good choice of song and video. Definitely emphasizes a materialistic view on life. There are contrasting images of Gucci- one is that he is portrayed as somewhat of a role model in his community (children staring and wanting to be like him) and the other is that of him being wanted for dealing. Try tying this into your paper. Video includes common stereotypes such as blacks being concerned with what they wear, even the idea that blacks are better dancers than whites, mexicans, and asians (could be written in terms of female roles in the video). Aside from this, you did an excellent job of analyzing the video.
There is so much to work with in this video! I think you really got most of it though. I wonder if you could even work in colorblind theory since this guy is oblivious to what everyone else (particularly minorities) think of him. That would be a rather interesting spin...
