The leader of a local group opposing uranium mining in Pittsylvania County disputed several claims made by mining supporters during a forum Thursday night in Danville. Gregg Vickrey, of Southside Concerned Citizens, took statements made by supporters of uranium and held them up to scrutiny for about 60 attendees at the Stratford Inn Conference Center. Uranium mining has been banned in Virginia since the early 1980s, but Virginia Uranium Inc. seeks to mine and mill a uranium deposit at Coles Hill about six miles northeast of Chatham.

Dominion Virginia Power is seeking a federal loan guarantee for the construction of a third nuclear reactor at the North Anna Power Station. The company announced yesterday that it had filed an application with the U.S. Department of Energy. The DOE loan guarantee program was created in 2005 to help finance the first wave of new commercial reactors in the United States.

Six anti-nuclear power protesters were arrested at the North Anna power plant's visitor center yesterday after refusing to leave at its closing time. Richard Zuercher, a spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power, said about 25 protesters showed up at the visitor's center near Mineral in Louisa County at about 2:30 p.m.

For the sixth year in a row, Areva’s nuclear fuel processing and equipment work in Lynchburg has won the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval. “No specific areas needing improvement were identified,” said Charles Payne, the NRC’s chief of an Atlanta inspection branch that oversees Areva and two other nuclear-fuel plants.

State, local and Dominion Virginia Power officials will test their ability next week to handle a nuclear emergency at the utility's North Anna Power Station. Localities within 50 miles of the Louisa County plant, including Richmond and neighboring counties, will participate in the drill Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting in Lynchburg on July 24 to discuss Areva NP’s safety record. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Areva’s headquarters at 3315 Old Forest Road. According to a letter posted on the commission’s Web site, the public meeting will focus on a performance review that occurred at Areva’s Mt. Athos Road plant in April.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission should revisit some of the environmental aspects of Dominion's plan for a third reactor at North Anna Power Station.
