American experts are monitoring nuclear facilities in China's earthquake zone, officials said Friday, after France's nuclear watchdog reported that some had suffered minor damage. The French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety said Chinese authorities "reacted well" to the quake and immediately shut down nuclear sites for inspection.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has called a meeting regarding the GE Plant in Castle Hayne. The commission is concerned about an alert the global nuclear fuels facility issued in January when moisture may have leaked into a container of uranium dioxide powder. The executive director of the environmental watchdog group NC Warn said it was most likely a human error. However Jim Warren voiced his concern, saying, "That's the NRC's clever way of saying there was no risk."

OTTAWA — Canada’s nuclear safety watchdog warned last month that it was concerned about an "erosion of safety margins" at the Pickering B nuclear station near Toronto. A letter from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission surfaced Tuesday on the eve of a hearing in which Ontario Power Generation will make the case for renewing the station’s operating licence until 2014.

FOUR major public hospitals are being ordered to stop leaking radioactive waste into the sewerage system. The waste is mainly from the radioactive iodine used to treat thyroid cancer patients. Sydney Water has demanded that the hospitals -- Royal North Shore, Liverpool, Nepean and Concord -- install decay tanks to protect workers from exposure.

PARIS, May 12 (IPS) - Some international organisations and governments in industrialised countries are pushing for further development of nuclear power, but amidst growing doubts over the safety of several nuclear installations. Concerns have arisen particularly over nuclear power stations in France, Germany, and Bulgaria. Environmental organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth (FoE) are condemning the involvement of French bank BNP Paribas in construction of the nuclear power station at Belene near the Danube River in northern Bulgaria.

ALBUQUERQUE, May 4 (UPI) -- Research to create the first U.S. atomic bombs has caused cancer among people who grew up near where the research was conducted, a lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque this month, alleges children who lived Los Alamos, N.M., in the 1940s and '50s were poisoned by contaminated fish and water, and even by radiation brought into their homes on the clothes of their fathers, who worked on the research effort dubbed the Manhattan Project, The New Mexican reported Sunday.

If it could, she'd find a way to earn, beg, borrow or steal enough to see Fruitie Johnson and Deborah Lawhorn again. She'd love to know how good it would feel to talk to them once more, to laugh, to have a reason to cook a big meal and lay it out on the empty table in her wood-paneled dining room. The doctor who treated the “Atomic Man” contaminated at Hanford in the nation’s worst radiological accident speaks today in Richland about Harold McCluskey’s care. McCluskey was caught in the August 1976 explosion of a glove box at Hanford’s Plutonium Finishing Plant when nitric acid was added to a column containing resin and radioactive americium. McCluskey spent five months in a steel-and-concrete isolation tank at the Hanford Emergency Decontamination Facility in Richland.
