Georgia Power will pay approximately $6.4 billion to Westinghouse Electric to build its share of two proposed 1,100-megawatt nuclear reactors at the utility's Vogtle plant south of Augusta, the utility said Wednesday. If approved, the plants promise customers higher power bills starting in 2018 . Customers would pay an additional $12 a month on a typical 1,000 kilowatt-hour bill, the company said. In the wan light of a snowy spring morning, belongings scattered on the floor of an abandoned kindergarten speak of a time before the children of Pripyat lost their innocence. Musty sandals and ballet slippers for tiny feet. Cardboard pictures of Lenin as a young boy and as a youthful leader—the Soviet equivalent of baseball cards. In the next room, dolls in various states of dress and dismemberment, lolling on metal cots where the children once napped. Finally, on the gymnasium wall, photos of the children themselves—doing calisthenics, climbing monkey bars, balancing on boards.

Private and government officials responsible for the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s safety said they are gradually making progress. It’s been 22 years since the world’s worst nuclear accident occurred on April 26, and 200 tons of radioactive material remains entombed in the fourth reactor. Despite warnings from nuclear watchdogs that Chornobyl still poses an environmental hazard, officials said confidently the plant is secure from any further accidents.
