In 1958, Troy Wade worked at the Nevada Test Site. His knowledge of that era comes in handy as president of the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas. "The Soviet Union tested their own atomic bomb, and suddenly this country was faced with a very different problem. Instead of developing weapons to be used against another country, suddenly this country had to defend itself against nuclear weapons developed by somebody else. That led to the establishment of the Nevada Test Site in 1950," he said.

If it hasn’t been clear that the cost of building a nuclear waste dump 90 miles from Las Vegas at Yucca Mountain far outweighs any benefit, a congressional hearing Tuesday made it crystal clear. Ward Sproat, the Energy Department official overseeing the project, told members of Congress that the startup cost of building and initially operating it will be about $90 billion. That’s a significant increase over the last estimate, which put the cost at $58 billion.

The new price tag for building and operating Yucca Mountain is estimated to be $90 billion, the Energy Department said today, providing the first real snapshot of lifespan costs after Congress has repeatedly pleaded for an updated financial picture. The estimate is $19 billion higher than previous rough estimates provided last year for the nation's nuclear waste dump about a 1 1/2-hour drive outside of Las Vegas.

It hit 117 degrees here in Las Vegas, but what's heating up longer term is another kind of heat -- radiation. The Department of Energy applied for its long-sought permit to open a permanent nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. DOE proceeded, as it always has on this project, with reckless disregard of the fact that isn't nearly ready to answer the questions that will arise. Just before the filing, the State of Nevada revealed that it had identified between 250 and 500 legal flaws in the permit process, any one of which could be the basis for a legal challenge.

A Senate spending panel has cut President Bush's 2009 budget request for Yucca Mountain by more than $100 million. Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota says that instead of the $494.7 million Bush proposed, the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water agreed Tuesday to $386.5 million.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Monday that Republican presidential candidate John McCain is saying the same things about Yucca Mountain that President Bush once did, and Nevadans should not be fooled. "That's what George Bush said, remember, and he'd been president for a couple of weeks when he decided science wasn't so important and jammed it down our throat," the Senate majority leader said in an interview.

The Bush administration submitted its formal application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license to build a nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada but failed to include a critical public safety standard for radiation exposure. The application lacks a plan to safeguard the public from certain dangerous isotopes in the radioactive waste that remain dangerous for 1 million years.

A day after the Bush administration dropped its 17-volume Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository application at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's door, Nevada challenged the bid to build at the site 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said today the Energy Department submitted "an unauthorized and legally deficient" license application. She asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in a 36-page brief, not to schedule the license application for a hearing that could last four years.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Bush administration bid to win approval for a national nuclear waste dump outside Las Vegas was challenged Wednesday by the state as too little and six years too late. State Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission not to register the license application or schedule it for hearings, calling it "legally deficient."

LAS VEGAS, May 19 (UPI) -- A Nevada woman says her long-running battle for compensation for her husband's death has become a crusade to expose U.S. Department of Labor intransigence. Bonnie Mattick told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the agency has refused to authorize the $150,000 in she feels she is owed after her husband died of cancer she says was caused by his work with toxic and radioactive materials at the Nevada Test Site.

A former Energy Department contract employee has been denied an illness compensation claim solely because he worked at Area 51, though federal officials years ago told base contract workers they would receive the same consideration as Nevada Test Site workers who became ill. And that makes Fred Dunham think the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program should be scrapped for a more fair system that follows a course Congress intended.

It's hard to find Nevada residents who still think Yucca Mountain is the biggest issue in the state, but this election year might just put it back on the map. After all, Sen. John McCain is solidly behind the proposed nuclear waste dump, even though he sometimes wears an environmentalist hat and at other times a fiscal conservative hat. Yucca Mountain could be a huge environmental disaster -- and it's already cost enough billions of dollars to actually deserve the honor of federal government boondoggle.
