An outline to fund the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant was part of a funding package signed by President Bush Tuesday night, according to a news release from the office of Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. Article Launched: 10/01/2008 09:05:09 PM MDT WIPP is a U.S. Department of Energy facility designed to safely isolate defense-related transuranic waste from people and the environment. Waste temporarily stored at sites around the country is shipped to WIPP and permanently disposed of in rooms mined out of an ancient salt formation 2,150 feet below the surface. WIPP, which began waste disposal operations in 1999, is located 26 miles outside of Carlsbad.

New Mexico's longest-serving senator, Pete Domenici, talked of his work on nuclear power, the budget process and mental health parity as he reminisced about 36 years in Congress in a farewell speech on the Senate floor Saturday. Domenici decided not to seek re-election after being diagnosed with an incurable brain disease. Congressmen Tom Udall, a Democrat, and Steve Pearce, a Republican, are battling to replace him in the Nov. 4 election.

The Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe are tired of investigations of the Tuba City Open Dump. They want it cleaned up. Studies since 1999 have indicated the presence of uranium and other metals in the dump and shallow groundwater exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards. The tribes have repeatedly indicated that clean closure — or excavation, removal and off-site disposal of all buried wastes — is the only acceptable option to prevent future contamination.

Los Alamos National Laboratory has started sampling soil in the northern New Mexico community of Los Alamos under a consent order with the state Environment Department. The lab said the sampling effort is an environmental assessment of areas that have been or could have been affected by lab operations from the days of the Manhattan Project to the early 1970s.

The state of New Mexico House of Representatives earlier this week announced two public meetings to discuss environmental concerns and economic development in connection with uranium mining and milling. The Indian Affairs Committee and Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Committee will hold joint meetings in Crownpoint and Grants on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, respectively.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission came to town Monday to receive comments on its Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for proposed in-situ leach uranium milling facilities in northwest New Mexico, and it didn’t go away empty-handed. Cradling her infant daughter, Lynnea Smith of Crownpoint — who helped push the Navajo Nation’s ban on uranium mining and milling — tried to hold back her emotions as she spoke, but the tears of frustration came anyway.

Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ: URRE) ("URI" or the "Company") announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement with BHP Billiton to acquire 100% of the ownership of Rio Algom Mining LLC ("Rio Algom"). Under the agreement, URI will pay BHP Billiton $110 million in cash and assume certain retirement benefits and reclamation liabilities of which up to $35 million will be pre-funded at closing. URI will also pay BHP Billiton $16.5 million contingent upon the receipt of a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct and operate a conventional uranium mill. The transaction is expected to close on or before June 1, 2008 and is subject to customary closing conditions, financing and regulatory approvals.

Environmentalists and Navajo groups who have been fighting a proposed coal-fired plant on tribal land in northwestern New Mexico have appealed an air permit granted for the plant. The petition filed Thursday alleges the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency failed to complete required analyses of the project, and instead was stampeded into granting the permit because developers of the Desert Rock power plant filed a lawsuit contending the EPA was taking too long.

Tens of thousands were killed instantly, and by the end of 1945 another 200,000 had died from radiation-related ailments. Soil being used by the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise for construction of its Fire Rock Casino parking lot has been analyzed and shown to be free of any uranium radiation contamination. Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency Executive Director Stephen B. Etsitty said Friday that his agency’s Superfund Program conducted a surface radiological survey of the Becenti Trails Road borrow pit and determined the soil is safe to use.

The Environmental Protection Agency is still seeking more information related to the latest errant drum shipped from Los Alamos National Laboratory to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. In June, a drum of transuranic waste with an open non-conformance report was mistakenly shipped from Los Alamos to WIPP and emplaced in the underground repository near Carlsbad.

Birmingham is on a route for regular shipments of radioactive waste scheduled to begin this fall, with trucks moving from Oak Ridge, Tenn., along Interstates 59, 20 and 459 and on to Carlsbad, N.M. In Carlsbad, the estimated 60 to 120 truckloads a year of waste from Tennessee will be buried a half-mile deep in containers in an old salt mine. The transports to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad are expected to take three years, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

This project will involve a field assessment of more than a dozen abandoned uranium mines northwest of Grants followed by the development and implementation of plans for the cleanup of these sites.

(AP) - A Texas mining company - blaming sliding uranium prices and the difficulty of getting financing - on Thursday backed out of a deal that could have led to the first uranium mill in the Grants area in two decades. Uranium Resources Inc. agreed last Oct. 12 to buy Rio Algom Mining LLC, based in Oklahoma City, from Australian mining company BHP Billiton Ltd.

ALBUQUERQUE -- A state committee has approved a proposal from five American Indian tribes to give central New Mexico's Mount Taylor temporary protection as a cultural property at a contentious meeting. The state Cultural Properties Review Committee voted 4-2 Saturday in Grants for an emergency listing of more than 422,000 acres surrounding the mountain's summit on the state Register of Cultural Properties.
