Lockheed Martin Corp. has acknowledged it installed the wrong pipe in a water treatment system that leaked Aug. 3, spilling more than 5,000 gallons of contaminated water. Moreover, the spill penetrated soil up to 30 feet away from the treatment system used to clean toxic groundwater from the source of the Tallevast plume, according to an incident report Lockheed filed as required with state regulators on Friday.

Aftenposten has revealed that Norwegian fisheries minister Helga Pedersen admitted knowing that the Russian submarine wreck Murmansk likely contained radioactive chemicals, despite earlier claims to the contrary. She denies charges that she lied about her knowledge, even when shown a letter she received in 2005 warning her about the dangers.

A Boulder, Colo., laboratory says new tests show that more people were exposed to plutonium than originally thought after a June spill there. No one who was exposed is expected to have significant health effects. The National Institute of Standards and Technology said Thursday that about half the 29 people who have been tested showed signs of exposure. The specific number wasn't released.

Radioactive strontium 90 has been found in trace amounts in a monitoring well next to Indian Point for the second time in little more than a year. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission spoke with county officials and others in an afternoon conference call today with Entergy, so the company could detail the preliminary test results it found during routine well sampling on the property, according to NRC documents obtained by The Journal News.

A French nuclear monitoring body has expressed concern at the number of leaks from French nuclear power stations in recent weeks. The director of Criirad, an independent body, said the organisation was worried by the numbers of people contaminated by four separate incidents.

The Limerick Nuclear Power Plant wasn't the source of radioactive sludge that was to be sent to two local landfills from a Royersford sewage treatment plant. The Montgomery County power plant was one of about a dozen clients that sent radiation-tainted uniforms to a commercial laundry that serves nuclear plants and nuclear-medicine facilities throughout the region, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the state Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday.

The French government yesterday ordered an investigation into the water table around all of France's 58 nuclear reactors in an effort to dispel fears raised by a leak from a treatment plant run by Areva in southern France.

First, an overflowing tub at a French nuclear plant spilled uranium into the groundwater. Then a burst pipe leaked uranium at another nuclear site, raising an alert on Friday. The two accidents within two weeks, both at sites run by French nuclear giant Areva, have raised questions about safety and control measures in one of the world's most nuclear-dependent nations, and given fodder to anti-nuclear activists.

French nuclear safety authorities said Friday that a broken pipe at a nuclear fuel plant in southeast France had caused a radioactive leak but no damage to the environment. The latest uranium spill at the plant run by nuclear giant Areva in Romans-sur-Isere came amid much public concern over a leak at another facility last week that polluted the local water supply.

The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant is operating at half its power level while it investigates a leak in one of the plant's cooling towers. The cooling towers were the source of a problem last summer when one of them degraded so badly that it collapsed.

The consumption of well water in three towns in the Vaucluse region and the irrigation of crops using water from the Gaffiere and Lauzon rivers are also prohibited. France's nuclear safety agency said liquid containing traces of unenriched uranium leaked from the Tricastin nuclear site near Avignon and that uranium concentrations in the Gaffiere river were initially about 1,000 times the normal levels. The agency said the uranium is toxic but only slightly radioactive.

A small amount of uranium powder escaped from a machine at a Japanese nuclear fuel plant near Tokyo, slightly exposing a worker to radiation, the plant operator said Thursday. There was no health threat to the worker and the spill from Wednesday's incident was contained inside the plant in Yokosuka, about 30 miles southwest of Tokyo, according to Global Nuclear Fuel-Japan Co.

Confirmation that radioactive brine has been leaking for two decades from a German underground deposit for nuclear waste is yet another blow to the idea that nuclear power can safely increase electricity generation and simultaneously reduce emissions. Radioactive leaks from the nuclear waste deposit Asse II near Braunschweig in Lower Saxony, some 225 km southwest of Berlin, were first discovered in 1988. The state-owned Helmholtz Institute for Scientific Research, which operates the centre, officially admitted the leaks only Jun. 16, under pressure from the German press.

Residents in the Vaucluse, a popular southern French tourist destination, were banned yesterday from drinking well-water or swimming or fishing in two rivers after a uranium leak from one of France's nuclear power plants. Nuclear officials yesterday revised down the amount of untreated liquid uranium that spilled from the Tricastin nuclear power centre in Bollene, saying it was limited to 75kg and ranked grade one on the one-to-seven scale of nuclear accidents.

The acting director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology called the June 9 plutonium spill at the Boulder campus unacceptable and said Friday that the agency is strengthening its safety program. The statement by Dr. James Turner came hours after U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., called for a review of NIST safety practices, saying he is "seeking answers . . . as to how this situation could have been allowed to have occurred in the first place."
