Twenty two years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Plaid MEP Jill Evans says tomorrow's anniversary (Saturday) serves as a timely reminder of why nuclear power must be phased out. The radioactive cloud spread radiation from Chernobyl right across Europe, and more than 300 farms in the north of Wales are still affected by restrictions imposed in the aftermath of the disaster.

Residents living next to the grounds of University Hospital Galway have vowed to oppose plans to locate a new storage facility for radioactive waste within metres of their homes. The Newcastle Park residents have expressed alarm at plans to turn a disused pumphouse, just over their backwalls, into a 17.2 square metre storage facility.

BATTLE lines are being drawn up to stop a firm dumping waste in disused anhydrite mines running below a town. Patrick Jenkin, Margaret Thatcher's Environment Secretary in 1985, gave Billingham, near Stockton, an assurance that nuclear waste would not be tipped in the exhausted underground workings below the town, following a community battle.
