A Nuclear Regulatory Commission hearing in Chadron last week, intended primarily to take public comment on a proposal for use of a generic Environmental Impact Statement in issuing permits for In-Situ Leach (ISL) mines such as the Crow Butte Resources mine near Crawford, provided a primer on the ISL process for an audience of about 35 people, and a discussion forum for several of those involved in challenges to Crow Butte’s proposed expansion project. All types of bellows and expansion joints to fit your piping systems including metal, fabric, rubber, thin wall, thick wall, slip type, rectangular, and stock bellows. www.usbellows.com Public Storage Official Site - $1 for First Month. 2000 Locations. Among the details to emerge from the meeting was acknowledgment by the NRC that, although ISL mine permits call for returning groundwater to its original condition when mining is done, some of the “baseline parameters” have proved unachievable by mining companies.

As the Maryland Public Service Commission began public hearings this week on a potential new nuclear reactor, the debate about nuclear energy's cost and effectiveness continues. The Maryland Public Interest Research Group released a report recently saying a new reactor at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant would lead to higher electric costs for Maryland ratepayers. The new plant's cost continues to escalate, and the project would likely receive substantial federal subsidies, the Baltimore organization says.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission last week held a public meeting in Crystal River, telling about 150 people that they could see the first Levy County reactor on line by 2016. TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- An Idaho nuclear watchdog group has asked the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct more environmental studies before going ahead with a plan that would increase the amount of nuclear waste being sent to eastern Idaho for processing. The Snake River Alliance, in a May 14 letter to U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, asked that more analysis be done before going through with the plan that makes the Idaho National Laboratory the nation's primary processing center for transuranic waste from nuclear sites that don't have their own processing capabilities.

WASHINGTON - The head of Utah-based EnergySolutions ripped open a tiny salt packet and poured it into a 2-foot-tall vase half filled with red sand. The salt, CEO Steve Creamer said, symbolizes the amount of Italian radioactive waste the company wants to store in Utah, and the leftover foot of space represents the amount of storage space remaining.

WASHINGTON — EnergySolutions would limit international low-level radioactive waste to 5 percent of its storage facility in Tooele County, company chairman R. Steve Creamer told a U.S. House panel Tuesday. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, and other opponents of the company's plan to bring Italian waste to the United States see a threat to the country's storage capacity for its own low-level waste. But Creamer tried to calm those fears by committing to a limit on the amount of foreign waste the company would take.
