Japan's Hitachi Ltd (6501.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Wednesday it will develop mid-size nuclear reactors together with General Electric Co (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to tap growing demand for smaller nuclear power plants in Southeast Asia and other emerging markets.

As the much-ballyhooed nuclear renaissance tries to get into gear, there’s growing interest in so-called “small nuclear” reactors. The idea is that small reactors—varying from a few megawatts to a few hundred megawatts—can sidestep some of the difficulties that threaten to derail the full-sized nuclear revival before it begins.

LONDON (Reuters) - Six of Europe's largest utilities are pushing for Westinghouse's (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) AP1000 reactor to be used to build the next generation of nuclear power plants in Britain, Westinghouse said on Friday.

PARIS, May 12 (IPS) - Some international organisations and governments in industrialised countries are pushing for further development of nuclear power, but amidst growing doubts over the safety of several nuclear installations. Concerns have arisen particularly over nuclear power stations in France, Germany, and Bulgaria. Environmental organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth (FoE) are condemning the involvement of French bank BNP Paribas in construction of the nuclear power station at Belene near the Danube River in northern Bulgaria.

URS has designed or built 49 nuclear power plants around the world. It expects most upcoming work of this type in the United States to be in the southeastern states.
