AppleInsider | iPad now 97% of tablet traffic, eclipses iPhone, iOS remains mobile leader - 0 views

" iPad now 97% of tablet traffic, eclipses iPhone, iOS remains mobile leader By Daniel Eran Dilger Published: 04:27 PM EST (01:27 PM PST) A new market research report notes that mobile devices now amount to almost 7 percent of all US web traffic, with Apple's iOS representing a 58.5 percent slice of all mobile traffic and the iPad now accounting for more traffic than iPhones. The growth of mobile devices has claimed a 6.8 percent chunk of US web traffic from conventional PCs, according to a new report by comScore. Of that segment, about two thirds of the traffic is from mobile phones and a remaining third is being generated by tablet users. The group notes that Apple's iPad now accounts for 97.2 percent of all tablet-originating web traffic, driving home the reality that competitors have not yet released a significant tablet competitor. Among iOS users, iPad now accounts for 46.8 percent of all traffic generated, making it now a more prolific tool than the iPhone for mobile web use, which represents 42.6 percent of iOS traffic. An increasingly important market segment The firm also outlined why the growth of tablet traffic is significant, noting that almost half of tablet owners have completed purchases using their tablet. "Tablet owners exhibited significant use of their devices throughout the entire online shopping process," comScore reported, "from doing the initial planning, conducting product and store research, making price comparisons, to finally transacting. In the past month, more than half of tablet owners looked up product or price information for a specific store (56 percent) and read customer ratings and reviews while on a tablet (54 percent)." The group added, "the incremental reach through mobile and connected devices should not be underestimated," pointing out that, "in August 2011, the additional mobile and connected device audience for Pandora accounted for more than half of their total cross-platform audience." iPads in Primary Education: Independent Learning using iPods in Maths (iPodagogy) - 9 views

  •
"Since the beginning of September we have been trying to maximise the use of 1:1 iPods in year 6 in all areas of curriculum. The potential of enhancing teaching and learning in mathematics through the use of this technology has been particularly interesting. We have been developing the creative use of a range of Apps to support progress, engage children and add relevance to maths teaching with positive outcomes (10 Practical ways to use Apps in Maths) We have also explored a wide range of maths specific Apps which have helped pupils mainly in the areas of number fact and tables recall. (Apps for Maths) Recently we have extended the use of the iPods to allow them to support independent learning, and play a central role in effective formative assessment."

The Nerdy Teacher: Using My iPad in the Classroom This Year (Redux) #edchat - 12 views

  •
"Two years ago today, I wrote a post about how I was going to use my iPad in the classroom. It was simply titled "Using My iPad in the Classroom This Year". To my surprise, it is my most visited post of all time with over 37,000 page views. That is about 20,000 more than my second most read post. I thought it would be fun to do an updated post having used the iPad in my class for two years. Now that I have a class set of iPads, the number of apps that I use or will be using has changed and I thought I would share that with everyone."

iPhones and iPads Are Robbing Us Of Truly Work-Free Vacations | Cult of Mac - 0 views

  •
"Using personal iPhones and iPads in the office leads many people to work from them while on vacation. Our iPhones and iPads, which enable us to work and be on call virtually anywhere at any time, will lead to more than half of us working while on vacation. That's the result of a new study that looked at how technology impacts the work/life balance. iOS devices are common players in the bring your own device (BYOD) era. As BYOD programs lead many of us to use our personal iOS devices and other mobile technology for work-related tasks, they also encourage an "always on" attitude from employers and employees alike."

T-Mobile Germany Banning Skype for iPhone - PC World - 0 views

  •
Sure glad we aren't having the problems they are having in Germany! I love the Skype iPhone app!
  •
at least we're better off than the folks in Germany, where the country's official provider, T-Mobile, wants to ban use of the Skype app on both its 3G network and its extensive Wi-Fi hot spot network. Not only has T-Mobile said that the use of Skype is forbidden, but it's also declared its intent to cancel the contracts of any users who use workarounds to run the program anyway. The company's reasoning is that the program's high data use would choke the network infrastructure and that it violates the customer contract, prohibiting VoIP--a clause apparently used by all other German mobile service providers as well.

INFOGRAPHIC: The Health Hazards Of Tablet Use - 8 views

  •
"I've never really thought about this until now, but if you use a tablet extensively, you have to watch how you're seated when you're using it. Just like how you sit in front of a normal computer matters to your back and neck posture, the same rules equally apply to when you're using your iPad, Android tablet or Kindle Fire."

How is the iPad being used around the U.S.? | Nearpod - 12 views

"Technology is changing many of our everyday lives' aspects. It is almost impossible to find someone who does not have a technological device that they use daily. The iPad is undoubtedly the most popular among Americans. Its benefits (quick and easy access to the Internet, portability, and applications for almost anything that you can think of) are facilitating its adoption and integration into almost every field of study and work. This infographic shows the state of iPad usage in the U.S., focusing on the Educational field, which is currently the one who is adopting mobile devices at the fastest pace. It was made using statistics from a 3-month period ending June 2012. "

8 Studies Show iPads in the Classroom Improve Education - 31 views

  •
Yes, this is the article. But you know what - if you use the ipad as a doorstop - does it make the classroom better? iPads IN the classroom don't make it better, I would argue that technology, used properly, can improve achievement. But technology used improperly is like the human voice used improperly -it can harm. Anyway, since this is making the rounds, you might want to take a look.

Pain and Remedies of Sharing iPads in Schools - 17 views

  •
"There is no end to the uses of the iPad in education. I've discussed that ad nauseum on this blog. As a learning tool, it has the potential to make a great positive change to learning. The only problem is Apple designed it for individual use. Schools are designed for ( or budgeted for) shared use. Conventional wisdom is for iPad use to occur in a 1:1 or BYOD Environment. In the best case scenario, I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately, financial realities will often dictate that sharing is the only viable option if we want our students to enjoy the benefits of the iPad. It can be done effectively - I've shared my thoughts early in the year about the pros and cons of shared iPads - but doesn't happen without some time consuming workarounds. What follows is my take on the pains (and remedies) of sharing iPads in a rather large Primary (elementary) school."

Explain Everything App - A Teachers iPad App - 9 views

"It doesn't take more than a cursory exploration of the application Explain Everything for the iPad, to find out that it is an incredibly useful and versatile app. So what is Explain Everything, exactly and what does it do? Well the answer to that question is in the name of the application itself. You can use the app to explain and share tutorial videos, collaborate with others and develop ideas and you can also use it to do live interactive presentations, using an iPad in the classroom."

Learning and Teaching with iPads - Kevin's posterous - 14 views

"We have been using the iPads in our Year 6 classroom. The students were very excited at the prospect of using iPads in our day-to-day learning. Our aim with the iPad was to use them for as many hours in the school day as we could. We have found the iPads beneficial in English groups and Maths groups. I have downloaded many applications for the students to use. I have noticed that new apps are added each day so regularly checking the app store has been beneficial. "

This wiki is intended to be a clearinghouse of applications, lessons ideas and experiences using the iPad in the classroom. The intention is that all apps listed have been tested and recommended by teachers using them. The Apps pages are generally created using google docs spreadsheets, feel free to update the wiki or the spreadsheets. (A link is provided on each page for the spreadsheets... at least the ones I've started working on...) At this point, as a high school science teacher, most of the apps I've recommended and investigated are geared to this level. Some can be used at any level. I invite you to add pages dedicated to your areas of interest and expertise if they are not already listed here. I would love to see a section on Literature and Language and Elementary Skills added to the wiki along with additions to any of the currently developed spreadsheets. It would also be sweet to share specific lessons or ideas for applications and activities.
