  • Generally, children with TS prefer to print because it's easier and faster for them. When they do attempt cursive writing, they often forget how to form letters or string them together.
  • Kinaesthesia is the body's perception of movement; in order to write a child needs to be able to "feel" where and how his shoulder, arm, and hand is moving.
  • Parents have reported to me that their child's handwriting deteriorates despite all efforts on behalf of the child, teacher and parent. At this point C or even earlier C the best direction is to encourage the development of keyboarding skills and implement other adaptations. The most obvious adaptation is to try to convince teachers to decrease expectations for written work.

  • Researchers have hypothesized that this is because the hands are not receiving proper feedback from the skin and/or joints. As a result, the child misjudges the pressure required to write.
  • Visual memory is required for spelling and for remembering how to form letters. Children with attention difficulties have the most difficulty with visual memory... and just plain memory!
  • For children with TS, motor and vocal tics and obsessions and compulsions interfere with attention. Some children have a need to do things "just right" so they spend more of their time erasing than producing.

  • The reasons are complex but can include hand cramping, or finger, wrist, arm, neck, shoulder, head and eye tics

  • Occupation therapy support for young students sometimes can be helpful. However, for the most part, practice and specialized pens/pencils will not have a positive outcome. Extra practice or rewriting typically will not result in better penmanship.  Frequently the best use of time and energy is to teach the child keyboarding skills at as early an age as possible.
  • It is important to note that for some students, handwriting is sometimes fine and other times messy. Remember that all symptoms are inconsistent, they wax and wane and are affected by stress and other environmental factors. Some students are able to write neatly for a short time but with longer assignments the dysgraphia becomes more of an issue.
