The Genocide in Darfur - Briefing Paper |Save Darfur - 0 views

  • Humanitarian assistance in Darfur continues to be at risk of collapse, in part because of sustained harassment by the Sudanese government, and in part because of the government’s militia allies and common criminals
  • September 2006, the United Nations estimated that such a collapse would cause up to 100,000 civilian deaths every month.(2) Troublesome developments suggest that such a failure is becoming more likely: the World Food Program’s Humanitarian Air Service received no funding in the first three months of 2008.(3) Last-minute donations totaling six million dollars funded it through the beginning of May. (4
  • In the second half of 2007, the Sudanese government’s divide-and-conquer strategy, described by Human Rights Watch as “chaos by design,”(5) caused an increasingly frenzied free-for-all in Darfur. Rebel groups fragmented further and criminal activity as well as intertribal fighting increased exponentially.(6) Still, the effects of tribal fighting should not be overemphasized. Of the eight largest displacements between January and November 2007, seven resulted from government or Janjaweed attacks. Only one was the result of intertribal fighting.(7) In early 2008, deaths and displacements from military operations by the government, its allied militias and rebels were even more common relative to those caused by tribal conflicts.

  • President Barack Obama nominated Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday (May 26, 2009) to replace retiring Justice David Souter. Supreme Court justices serve for life, but their nomination must be approved by the U.S. Senate, where Obama's fellow Democrats have a majority. If approved, the 54-year-old Sotomayor could become the court's first Latino Supreme Court Justice.
  • Barack Hussein Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barack Obama, Sr., was born of Luo ethnicity in Nyanza Province, Kenya. He grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British. Although reared among Muslims, Obama, Sr., became an atheist at some point.

President-elect Barack Obama lays out key parts of Economic Recovery Plan | Change.gov:... - 0 views

  • Yesterday we learned that our economy has lost 2 million jobs since the recession began 11 months ago. That's why, in today's weekly address, President-elect Barack Obama explains the key parts of his Economic Recovery Plan -- which will save or create 2.5 million jobs in the next two years. Watch Your Weekly Address now -- then send us your questions or ideas about how to fix the economy:
  • Yesterday, we received another painful reminder of the serious economic challenge our country is facing when we learned that 533,000 jobs were lost in November alone, the single worst month of job loss in over three decades. That puts the total number of jobs lost in this recession at nearly 2 million
  • But we need action – and action now. That is why I have asked my economic team to develop an economic recovery plan for both Wall Street and Main Street that will help save or create at least two and a half million jobs, while rebuilding our infrastructure, improving our schools, reducing our dependence on oil, and saving billions of dollars.

US economy: Fuel prices | Business | The Observer - 0 views

  • Donald Nolen, a 39-year-old independent driver from Rhome, Texas, spends $2,000 a week on diesel. 'This time a year ago, I guess it would have cost $1,500,' he says.
  • With the price of crude oil soaring towards $105 a barrel, the average price of diesel fuel reached a record high of $4.037 a gallon in the US last week, according to the AAA motor club - a 45 per cent price increase in 12 months
  • Every 5 cent fuel price hike increases a trucker's annual expenses by about $1,000, says the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), the trade group that represents 160,000 self-employed US truckers

FOXNews.com - Truckers to Strike Over Record Diesel Prices, Some Paying Up to $1,200 to... - 0 views

  • Diesel this week was at an average of more than $4 a gallon in Oregon and Washington and nearly $4.12 in California, according to the American Trucking Association. If a trucker is filling up a 300-gallon semi, that bill could top $1,200.
  • Mike Card, president of Combined Transport in Medford, has 388 tractor-trailers in the company. He says the company is spending $2 million a month on fuel
  • More than 100 truckers and others rallied on the steps of the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg Monday, asking lawmakers to cut state taxes on their fuel.

  • Prices for diesel fuel have been lifted in the last few months by a wave of higher crude oil prices. Although oil has dropped from its March 13 closing high of $109.17, it is still trading above $100 per barrel and keeping gasoline and diesel prices at or near record levels. The U.S. retail price for gasoline set a new high of $3.29 a gallon after rising 3.1 cents over the last week, the federal Energy Information Administration said on Monday. The national price for regular, self-service gasoline is up 58 cents from a year ago as expensive crude oil continued to be passed on to consumers at the pump, the Energy Department's analytical arm said in its weekly survey of service stations. In the EIA's latest weekly survey, gasoline was the most expensive on the West Coast at $3.52 a gallon, up 0.6 cent. San Francisco had the highest city price at $3.65, down a penny. The Gulf Coast states had the cheapest regional price at $3.21 a gallon, up 4 cents. Boston had the lowest city price, up 0.7 cent to $3.11.

Obama elected 44th president - Decision '08- msnbc.com - 0 views

  • Obama congratulated his opponent, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, for his “unimaginable” service to the United States, first as a prisoner of war for 5½ years in North Vietnam and then for nearly three decades in Congress.
  • A crowd of nearly a quarter-million jammed Grant Park and the surrounding area in Chicago, where Obama addressed the nation for the first time as its president-elect at midnight ET.
  • Obama beat McCain by 52 percent to 46 percent, and he could realistically claim a mandate with nearly two-thirds of the Electoral College. As of Wednesday afternoon, he had 349 electoral votes compared to 173 for McCain, with only North Carolina and Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District left to declare.

Truckers 'going broke' and threatening to strike - 0 views

  • Dan Little, the owner/operator of a livestock hauling company in Carrollton, Mo., estimated Tuesday that at least 1,000 other truckers from across the United States have committed so far to joining him in a strike on April 1
  • “The fuel is too high, and there’s no reason for it
  • At issue is the rising cost of diesel fuel, which has reached or exceeded $4 per gallon in at least 17 states. But Little does not expect his strike to bring down the per-gallon price of gas, nor does he expect to have any effect on the oil companies
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The average owner/operator is paying $600 to $800 a month for truck insurance. It’s based on personal credit, which means the monthly cost is going up for a lot of truckers because their credit is going down
  • Everything in the world is going up (in price), except for what we do. I lose money if I start my truck, and that truck is paid for — free and clear.”
  • Hills then removed his wristwatch, using it to explain his point of view: “Every piece of this watch was trucked from somewhere. If you can’t keep up with the trucks, we’re all screwed — not just this country, but the world.”

Trucker strike on April 1? Or April 3? Or not at all? | Third Party Logistics News - 3P... - 0 views

  • common complaint is the spiraling costs of diesel fuel, which has spiked to $4 a gallon in some parts of the country. Truckers who drive as part of company fleets have all their fuel costs covered by their employer, but independent drivers get reimbursed for their gas costs through a fuel surcharge
  • But the truckers have their complaints. Besides the fuel costs, the credit crunch is putting pressure on insurance companies to increase their premiums. Bad credit makes a trucker a higher risk for insurers
