  • Lately, I feel as though I have been learning without thinking.

In contrast, I feel like I have been thinking so much that there is danger of pieces of my skull being extracted as shrapnel from some unsuspecting student who just happened to be sitting next to me in our New Media class!

The Shield of Faith - 0 views

  • I believe that the appearance of God the Father and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, in 1820 to Joseph Smith unlocked the heavens not only to the great spiritual knowledge revealed in this dispensation but also to secular knowledge. "Anthropologists inform us that for thousands of years the average human being could expect to live about 25 to 30 years."7 But since the late 19th century, life expectancy worldwide has risen to 64 years.8 New ideas, including scientific inventions and discoveries of better ways of doing things, were being produced annually at 39 a year from 4,000 B.C. to A.D. 1, contrasted to 3,840 new ideas a year in the 19th century, while today they are created at the rate of 110,000 a year.9 Now comes the challenge to prevent the scientific, technical, and intellectual from stifling the spiritual enlightenment in our lives. As someone once said, "The greatest of undeveloped resources [in our country] is faith; the greatest of unused power is prayer."10 Technology may help us communicate with each other and the world, but not with God.

  • The value of this blog post is in the comment section below the article
    • David Wiley

Very interesting! Intuitively you would think that the post itself would have to be valuable to garner / stimulate valuable comments... I love that you found these comments more valuable than the post itself, it says something very interesting about blogging...

boyceducation: Blogs in Education- A try in an institute class. - 0 views

  • however, I thought if this class (Dr. Wiley's) is going to study this idea of religion and new media, why not try it for my class (institute).

I hope I don't indirectly lead your students astray!
  • the obvious 'assessment' faux pas religion teachers face
    • David Wiley

I'm not sure I know exactly what you're talking about, but I've often wondered what it might do to a student's testimony to tell them they had failed Book of Mormon. I'd be curious to hear more about your experiences / feeelings with assessment.
  • I did ask permission from my direct supervisor.

Awesome question! What are the differences (if they exist) between blogging and writing?
  • students are educational clients, and hopefully consumers
    • David Wiley

Is the customer always right? Do customers have more influence on business practives than students have classroom practices? How much give and take, or collaboration on teaching and assessment strategies, is appropriate?
  • how NOT to use blogs
    • David Wiley

Maybe even more useful than a list of what you should do!
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • it still seems to be a sweeping (and misled) generalization.
    • David Wiley

I think most generalizations are sweeping and misled. =)
  • using something for which it was not initially intended* is how many great ideas are generated
    • David Wiley

In fact, I would say that this is how most of the best ideas are generated. Particularly in our field - did people design the internet, or email, or any technology ever with education in mind?

Yep! This never happens... Gotta just get moving today.
  • That's something I could become (over?)zealous about, because it adds passion and purpose to my natural interest
    • David Wiley

Try to protect this passion, interest, and excitement. If you ever loose that, you'll need to consider finding another field of endeavor.
