More people will see your website than will see you business card. Ten years ago most businesses had a website as more of an after thought. Today for a business to succeed a website is paramount to your success. When was the last time you did business with a company that did not have a website? The internet has become the biggest word of mouth advertising. You can reach more potential customers on the internet for the least amount money. When you compare the cost of advertising to radio, television or print, the internet wins hands down. One of the biggest mistakes that business owners make when approaching their online efforts is thinking that it should be free. While it is true that there is no money to submit your website to Google, getting it to to rank well for your keywords is anything but free. It needs to have a budget just like any other type of advertising. Very seldom is anything that is worthwhile comes at zero cost. So what are the cost of establishing an online presence? Could you do it for free? Yes you could do it for "free" if you do not factor in your time and the tools that are required to make a good looking website. An analogy that I like to use is family photos. You might have a million of them. There photos that you post on facebook, share with friends, etc. People will look at them say 'ohh' and 'ahhh', but no one thinks that you had a professional photographer following you around on your vacation. In short the photos are good for what they are. Don't feel bad everyone's photos are like that. When you decided to have a family portrait done that you could place on the coffee table, you most likely hired a professional photographer. You got dressed up, had your hair done, made sure you had a good shave, etc. That picture probably looks fantastic! Could you have dressed up, posed the family and set your camera on auto timer? Absolutely. Would it had turned out just as good? Most likely not. Why? For starters equipment plays a role. The camera that you bought is probably not professional grade. Why would you pay $2,500 for a camera unless you are a professional who makes his living taking pictures. So you think to yourself, I will go out and buy a professional camera and take our family photo, all of my friend's family photos, now the cost per photo is going down. Not so fast. I am willing to bet that most people would take the same old photos that they always take. Why? Well, to be honest you are not trained as a photographer. Most people would be confused by all the dials and buttons. Keep in mind also you have not purchased a trip, a backdrop, lights, etc. As you start to do the math you realize that you are not saving any money by taking this portrait yourself. The biggest reason that it is better to hire the professional is experience. Between the two of you who do you you think has more real world knowledge of what works and what does not, you are the photographer. Web designer
