Now I assume anyone reading this article is doing so because they are getting married. First off I should congratulate you, it's a huge event in one's life and a really special day. I guess the issue with getting married is that being such a big day there is lots of pressure placed on you to get it right, to have the day run without any major hiccups, this pressure can make organising your wedding a nightmare, yet shouldn't it be fun?

One major organisational component of any wedding is choosing a wedding photographer. When going to all the trouble of putting together your dream wedding you want to be able to remember it forever right? to be able show grand kids? to look back in ten years time and reminisce about the biggest day of your life? It is for such reasons that hiring a professional wedding photographer should be considered an integral part of any wedding. Yet when faced with having to find a photographer that is right for you many couples have no idea where to begin.

I think it is important to first outline some different styles of wedding photography, in doing so you will consciously be able to select a photographer that works in a style you personally connect with. After all, not all wedding photography is created equal and everyone has a different taste.

    Traditional Wedding Photography

Traditional wedding photography generally involves lots of heavily posed photographs, strong importance is placed on posing entire family groups in very specific arrangements, creating an almost "formal" photo kind of look. This same concept tends to carry over to the bride and groom portraits whereby the photographer will generally run the couple through a series of poses in a set number of locations. Such poses may include traditional staples like a kiss and a dip. This style of wedding photography is perhaps what most people think of when one mentions wedding photographs, it tends to appeal to couples who value very traditional weddings with cream puff dresses and a convoy of Rolls Royce wedding cars. These days however it is not the only option.

    Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

Photojournalistic somekeyword is increasing in popularity and is gaining a strong following amongst younger, trendier couples who are shying away from traditional wedding dresses and formal weddings. This of course does not mean a traditional wedding can't be photographed in a photojournalistic manner.

Essentially, photojournalistic wedding photography is about telling a story, in this case the story of your wedding day. The photographer will generally start shooting in the morning when you begin getting ready and will continue to travel with you throughout the day photographing the events as they happen. Such a style of shooting is generally about obtaining relaxed and candid photographs, as such for the most part there will be much less posing involved than traditional wedding photography.

Whilst these styles represent two distinct approaches to wedding photography it is important to understand that many wedding photographers combine aspects of both styles, such as shooting in a candid manner for the majority of the day but allocating a small amount of time for some posed photographs. Now that you understand the difference between the two approaches you should be in a better position to view a photographer style critically and ask yourself if it appeals to the outcome you desire.
