Skin care products today are more diverse, complex and confusing than ever before. New companies and new products are popping up every day it seems, all trying to cash in on our desire to retain or regain a youthful appearance. With promises of amazing results, before and after pictures, and countless advertising ploys, they lure us into their web. Concerned mostly with the bottom line, many large beauty companies care little about the actual effectiveness or safety of their products. They hope that we will be gullible and naïve and that all the wrinkle free faces on their ads will have us lining up to put our money in their pockets. And we do.
It works because few of us ever take the time to investigate a company or find out exactly what that "miracle" ingredient does. The skin care products we buy are full of ingredients we cannot even pronounce, let alone do we know what purpose they actually serve. Beauty companies tend to list ingredients that only a chemist could decipher. For example, on the label of a product, the label may say it contains teinol, retinol, and retinyl palmitate. These are all just different forms of vitamin A.
We need to educate ourselves before we go out and purchase the latest and greatest skin care products. There is a popular commercial for ice cream that has young children trying to pronounce the ingredients in other brands of ice cream, which even an adult, could likely not do. Then the child reads that brand's ingredients and says, "Milk, cream, sugar…" Wouldn't it be wonderful if skin care was the same way? If a label read "antioxidants, phyto-nutrients, essential oils, plant proteins…" we would all be able to make better decisions on the beauty aisle.
There are some companies, like the DNA Health Institute, that create 100% all-natural, all-organic, hollistic skin care products. They do not use any synthetic (man-made) ingredients, so their labels are much easier for the average consumer to understand. How many of us have unknowingly used products that contain chemicals that can be toxic? If a toxic ingredient is applied to the skin, it can get into the bloodstream and over time, cause damage to other organs. DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) is a very popular skin care ingredient because it has proven abilities to tighten skin. However, one study revealed that it actually has the potential to cause cell damage.
It is important for us to protect ourselves by researching a product, and the company that makes that product, before we buy it. Look for ingredients that make sense to you, ingredients that the body actually needs. Skin care products made by companies with a holistic approach will provide you with products that show impressive results, without saturating your skin with potentially harmful chemicals, preservatives, additives or binders. Wouldn't you rather get rid of those crow's feet, frown lines, age spots, and sagging skin with natural ingredients that will not harm your body, but instead, increase your overall health?
