    Kazakh copper giant Kazakhmys plans within the next five to six years to invest $4bn in its copper deposits at Bozshakol and Aktogai - which will allow an average 30% increase in capacity - and a further $1bn in refining facilities. Kazakh state welfare fund Samruk-Kazyna, a Kazakhmys shareholder, said in October that China's Development Bank could lend Kazakhmys between $1.5bn and $2bn to finance the Bozshakol project.

    China's imports of unwrought copper and semi-finished copper products are unlikely to recover in November, according to Zhu Yanzhong, an analyst at Jinrui Futures, a subsidiary of top smelter Jiangxi Copper. Imports are expected to be flat, or fall slightly from the previous month, limited by strong LME prices and abundant domestic supplies. Traders estimate refined copper imports (the most popular) will be 150,000-160,000t in November (against 169,374t in October).

    J-Power Systems, the high-voltage cables jv between Japan's Sumitomo Electric Industries and Hitachi Cable, is currently preparing to manufacture cables abroad in India and Saudi Arabia and says its new mid-term plan for fiscal 2010-2015 will increase the ratio of overseas sales from 40% to 50%. It is also considering adding two more overseas production factories.

    Japan's SWCC Showa Holdings says its domestic wire harness production subsidiary, Daiji, will close its Itami plant in Japan, to integrate the operation into its Okayama plant. In October, two wire harness production subsidiaries in Dongguan, China, were integrated into a single plant (Dongguan Showa Interconnect Products). The ongoing reorganisation is a response to the trend in recent years for Showa's main wire harness customers - Japanese electric appliance makers - to transfer operations to China and Southeast Asia.

Chile - Cochilco warns copper sector carbon dioxide emissions may double by 2020 - 0 views

    Cochilco, Chile's state copper commission, forecasts that CO2 emissions from the country's copper sector will rise from 18Mt predicted for 2009 to 36Mt in 2020, if copper output grows as forecast from the 5.38Mt expected this year to 7.38Mt in 2020, and if the copper mining industry continues with current methods. Speaking at a conference on 2 November, Cochilco's director of public policies and research said mitigation measures to increase energy efficiency must be implemented.

    Yunnan Copper Co. Ltd., China's third-largest copper producer, is considering acquiring a copper mine in Kazakhstan in 2010. Projects are also being developed in Laos, Indonesia, and Tibet. The company's general manager, Yang Chao, said copper demand will increase in 2010 and predicted prices might surpass 70,000 yuan/t next year.

    Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), South Korea's state power company, said on 30 November it will join forces with local cable makers LS Cable and Taihan Electric Wire, and transformer manufacturer LS Industrial System Co., to develop core technologies for a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system. KEPCO predicts a global HVDC market of US$20bn in 2019.

    Italian cable maker Prysmian said it has won a strategic first contract in China in the sector of extra high voltage (EHV) power transmission links - to supply a 500kV underground cable system to Anhui Xiangshuijian Pumped Storage Co. Ltd (a China State Grid affiliate company) - and at the same time announced it plans a new €20m (US$29.8m) investment to increase production capacity at its HV and EHV cables manufacturing unit in Baoying.

    U.S. imports and exports of all brass mill products fell in September, according to data from the Copper and Brass Fabricators Council: imports fell 21.7% y/y to 37m lbs (from 47.3m lbs), exports fell 21% y/y to 19.7m lbs (from 25m lbs). Mexico was both leading supplier of imports (7m lbs) and top export destination (6.7m lbs). Imports/exports breakdown was: sheet, strip, plate and foil products 10.5m lbs/ 8.1m lbs; pipe and tube products 18.1m lbs/5.9m lbs; profiles, rods and bars 6.5m lbs/3.6m lbs; copper alloy wire 1.9m lbs/2.1m lbs.

    The Japan Copper and Brass Association said on 24 November preliminary data shows Japan's output of copper and copper alloy fabricated products, including sheets and tubes, dropped 12% y/y in October, to 69,218 tonnes. This is the 15th consecutive month of decline, but October production was the highest level and the slowest drop since last November. Demand for pipes for air conditioners remains subdued, but there is some recovery in the semiconductor, auto and electronics sectors.

    Japanese copper wire and cable shipments in October were down 14.3% y/y at 61,000 tonnes, but up 5.2% m/m from 57,984 tonnes in September, according to data provided by the Japanese Electric Wire and Cable Makers' Association on 20 November. Only the power and telecommunications sectors saw y/y rises in October shipments: power industry shipments rose 15.6% y/y to 8,100 tonnes, the largest volume since 8,427 tonnes in November 2001. But this was more than offset by declines in the construction, automobile, home appliance and export sectors.

    The global copper market was in a deficit of 58,000 tonnes in January-September 2009, compared with a surplus of 27,000 tonnes in the same period last year, according to the World Bureau of Metal Statistics (WBMS) report released on 18 November. Global consumption rose fractionally to 13.87 million tonnes while Chinese apparent consumption increased 47% to 5.47 million tonnes. The British-based consultancy said this masks a build up of unreported stocks, since output of semi manufactures increased only 16.67%.

    Jinlong Seamless Copper Pipe Co. and Hailiang, China's top two producers of seamless refined copper pipe and tube, are both included in the current US anti-dumping investigations into imports from China and Mexico. Jinlong (which exports to the US, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa) last month opened a new plant in Mexico (annual production capacity 60,000 tonnes), designed to supply demand in North and South America. Hailiang's exports of pipe and tubes to the US in 2008 were15,479 tonnes (10.5% of total sales), and in 1H09 5,622 tonnes (7.9% of total). In total China exported 50,000 tonnes in 2008, and 30,000 tonnes in 1H09.

    The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on 13 November took a unanimous vote to continue its anti-dumping duty investigations into imports of seamless refined copper pipe and tube from China and Mexico. Preliminary determinations are due 9 March 2010. On 21 October, the U.S. Commerce Department formally initiated anti-dumping investigations (petitioned by domestic manufacturers Cerro Flow Products Inc, KobeWieland Copper Products LLC and two divisions of Mueller Industries Inc), finding estimated dumping margins of 60.5% for China and 76.5% to 85.7% for Mexico.

    The world's biggest copper producer, Chile's Codelco, expects an economic rebound in the US and Europe will help support demand for copper next year with China maintaining its growth. Codelco's copper output for the first nine months this year was up 16% y/y at 1.21 million tonnes, and it expects output of 1.7 million tonnes for the full year and slightly more next year. Economic recovery will support copper prices.

    Chinese imports of copper and copper semis products tumbled in October to reach 263,109 tonnes, down 34% from September (when imports unexpectedly surged to 399,052 tonnes), according to data released by the Chinese customs office on 11 November. This is the lowest monthly total since January's 232,700 tonnes. The market had expected a decline, due to prices, but not such a big one. China's scrap copper imports were 260,000 tons in October, down 36% from 411,696 tonnes in September.

China - Daye Nonferrous to double refined & semi-finished copper output by 2015 - 0 views

    Daye Nonferrous Metals Co. Ltd, the fifth-biggest copper smelter in China, plans to double refined copper production to 500,000 tonnes by 2015. Daye also has 160,000 tonnes of annual capacity to turn refined copper into semi-finished copper products, and plans to boost this output to 400,000 tonnes by 2015. The company (which also has a stake in products producer Chinalco Central China Copper Co - annual capacity 130,000 tonnes) is planning an IPO for an initial public listing, but has given no timeframe for this.

    Nissan Copper Ltd. plans to commence commercial production at its new tube plant in Silvassa in June. The plant has a total installed capacity of 12,000tonnes per year. The company plans to export around 60% of its production to the United Arab Emirates and the rest will be sold domestically.

Italy - Prysmian improves organic sales decline in Q3 - 0 views

    Italy's Prysmian, leading energy and telecom cables and systems manufacturer, reported the first signs of market stabilisation in its third quarter 2009 results, with organic sales decline improved to -16% in Q3 (from -18.3% in H1) and adjusted ebitda margins stable at 10.7% (10.5% in H1). 9-month sales revenues were €2.78bn (compared to €3.95bn a year ago); EMEA region's organic sales (70.2% of total) were down 16% while N.America (9.7% of total) was down 43%. The strategic high voltage power transmission cables sector saw Q2's orders intake recovery confirmed in Q3, with order backlogs through 2010. The company is co-operating with anti-trust investigations into this sector in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, US and Japan.

    The China Nonferrous Metals Association (CNIA) reports that in October the operating rate of Chinese copper wire and rod enterprises was 78.3%, up 2.8% y/y, and that of copper tube enterprises (previously down 59.2% y/y in September ) was 73.3%, up 22.8% y/y and 14.1% m/m. Copper semis output Jan-Sep was 6.27mt, up 18% y/y. The fourth quarter is the traditional peak production season, driven by the growth of end use industries such as home appliances and automobiles etc, and CNIA expects to see continued growth in consumption.
