Japan's SWCC Showa Holdings says its domestic wire harness production subsidiary, Daiji, will close its Itami plant in Japan, to integrate the operation into its Okayama plant. In October, two wire harness production subsidiaries in Dongguan, China, were integrated into a single plant (Dongguan Showa Interconnect Products). The ongoing reorganisation is a response to the trend in recent years for Showa's main wire harness customers - Japanese electric appliance makers - to transfer operations to China and Southeast Asia.

Japan - Smelters plan cautious H2 copper output rise - 1 views

  • Caroline Millar

But several will stop short of restoring full production and Pan Pacific Copper (Japan's top copper smelter) will produce 1.6% less than a year ago, citing tight raw material supplies. Sumitomo Metal Mining's H2 output will be 0.9% down y/y, Mitsubishi Materials' 20% up (last H2's output was affected by repairs at its Naoshima smelter), Dowa Holdings' 13% up, Furukawa's 0.9%. up, and Nittetsu Mining's 0.9% down.

Japan - Pan Pacific Copper sees domestic demand improvement - 0 views

  • Caroline Millar

Pan Pacific Copper Co Ltd, Japan's top copper smelter, says its sees domestic demand improving with each month and the company has produced more copper in the first half of the fiscal year than it planned. Earlier this year demand had plunged to half the usual levels, forcing the company to cut output by 10% in Jan-March. It had planned a 7% cut for the year to the end of next March, but with the domestic recovery and robust exports to China it has only had to cut output by 4-5% in April-September. However, disruption of raw material supplies by recent force majeure problems at mines will make a return to full production difficult.

Japan - Fujikura's cable business recovers with copper price rise - 0 views

  • Caroline Millar

After initially forecasting a ¥1.1bn operating loss for the fiscal year ending March 2010, Japan's Fujikura Ltd says it now expects its cable and systems business will recover to the break-even point on an operating basis, thanks to a recovery in copper prices. The cable and systems business handles many products whose prices are linked to copper, such as power cables, communications cables and coated wires. Sales volumes this year are expected to be down 20-30% due to weaker capital spending in the private sector. But since the end of March 2009 three-month futures prices for copper on the London Metal Exchange have climbed nearly 60%, and the half year operating loss forecast has now shrunk from ¥1.9bn to ¥800m.

Japan - Fujikura announced first quarter sales declined 28.7% - 0 views

Fujikura Dia Cable (FDC), the joint venture of Fujikura and Mitsubishi Cable Industries, announced a 14% year-on-year decline in their building cables shipment for the period April-September 2008. FDC describe the current situation as a difficult one, especially due to weak demand. The manufacturer, facing decreased inventory value due to falling copper prices, has to sell at relatively low prices reducing profit margins. FDC cable shipments fell by 8% in 2007 and the initial target for 2008 was to grow back to the 2006 level. However, this was revised down because of sales results. Overall profitability is also affected by rising prices of insulating and sheathing materials.
