    Cochilco, Chile's state copper commission, forecasts that CO2 emissions from the country's copper sector will rise from 18Mt predicted for 2009 to 36Mt in 2020, if copper output grows as forecast from the 5.38Mt expected this year to 7.38Mt in 2020, and if the copper mining industry continues with current methods. Speaking at a conference on 2 November, Cochilco's director of public policies and research said mitigation measures to increase energy efficiency must be implemented.

    The world's biggest copper producer, Chile's Codelco, expects an economic rebound in the US and Europe will help support demand for copper next year with China maintaining its growth. Codelco's copper output for the first nine months this year was up 16% y/y at 1.21 million tonnes, and it expects output of 1.7 million tonnes for the full year and slightly more next year. Economic recovery will support copper prices.

This follows a 7.8% y/y rise in August but the country's 9-month copper production is down 1.1% y/y at 3.94 million tonnes.

    Chile's Mining Minister Santiago Gonzalez said on 13 July that world copper prices could average about $2 per pound in 2009. He said there have been no changes in copper demand from top buyers like China and India, and he sees world copper inventories stabilizing. Chile's copper output could rise by as much as 4% this year, from 5.33 million tonnes produced in 2008 (which was 4.1% less than in 2007).

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Copper futures jumped Wednesday after news that a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit Chile, the world's top copper producer. Copper futures for December delivery rose 3.6 cents, or 1.2%, to $3.12 a pound. Copper fell in morning trading. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake hit 63 miles east of Iquique, Chile, a major copper mining area.
