Q3 revenue was MYR18.9 million (US$5.5 million), down from MYR31.1 million (US$9.1 million) for the same period in the previous year. Net profit for the third quarter was MYR1.5 million (US$0.4 million), compared to MYR2.4 million (US$0.7 million) a year ago.

Japanese copper wire and cable shipments in October were down 14.3% y/y at 61,000 tonnes, but up 5.2% m/m from 57,984 tonnes in September, according to data provided by the Japanese Electric Wire and Cable Makers' Association on 20 November. Only the power and telecommunications sectors saw y/y rises in October shipments: power industry shipments rose 15.6% y/y to 8,100 tonnes, the largest volume since 8,427 tonnes in November 2001. But this was more than offset by declines in the construction, automobile, home appliance and export sectors.

This is a 68% y-o-y plunge. Net sales in Q3 2009 added up to US$1.08 billion, down by 25% y-o-y on a metal adjusted basis. In the same period, operating income plummeted by 59% y-o-y to US$49.4 million. The company expects that in Q4 markets in developing regions will perform relatively better compared with developed regions. This is partly attributed to infrastructure projects and better credit conditions.

Shipments in September amounted to an estimated 57,800t, a 14% m-o-m increase. The copper wire and cable sales forecast for FY2009 has been revised down to 648,000t compared to an earlier projection of 705,000t.

This compares with a 16% contraction experienced in H1 2009. Nexans said that lower building cable sales in Europe and Asia-Pacific as well as setbacks in the execution of high voltage contracts affected its sales figures. Energy cable revenues in Q3 were down by 13% y-o-y; those of telecom cables plunged by 19% y-o-y. In line with planned cutbacks in production capacity, electrical wire sales in Q3 were down by 35% y-o-y.

It really depends on when growth will pick up." Last month Nexans said it may reduce production capacity of basic copper wires in France by more than half.

Both companies had confirmed on 29 June this year that they were in preliminary talks to evaluate a merger, which would have created the largest cable company in the world.

Sales volumes this year are expected to be down 20-30% due to weaker capital spending in the private sector. But since the end of March 2009 three-month futures prices for copper on the London Metal Exchange have climbed nearly 60%, and the half year operating loss forecast has now shrunk from ¥1.9bn to ¥800m.

FDC describe the current situation as a difficult one, especially due to weak demand. The manufacturer, facing decreased inventory value due to falling copper prices, has to sell at relatively low prices reducing profit margins. FDC cable shipments fell by 8% in 2007 and the initial target for 2008 was to grow back to the 2006 level. However, this was revised down because of sales results. Overall profitability is also affected by rising prices of insulating and sheathing materials.

Hitachi Cable Ltd. announced on 29 July it plans to sell Hong Kong-based wire production subsidiary Huanan Wire & Cable Service Co., within the month, to 15% stake-holder Hayakawa Densen Kogyo Co. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Huanan Wire has a factory in Shenzhen which produces general-purpose wire used in electronic equipment. Hitachi Cable now intends to concentrate production in that region on high-value-added products such as cables for medical equipment.

<div class="cArrow"> </div><div class="cContentInner">Hitachi Cable Ltd. announced on 29 July it plans to sell Hong Kong-based wire production subsidiary Huanan Wire & Cable Service Co., within the month, to 15% stake-holder Hayakawa Densen Kogyo Co. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Huanan Wire has a factory in Shenzhen which produces general-purpose wire used in electronic equipment. Hitachi Cable now intends to concentrate production in that region on high-value-added products such as cables for medical equipment.</div>
