Different gladiators specialized in a variety of weapons and tactics and get different armours. According on the weapons they use, there were several types (classes)of gladiators. The Samnites fought which has a short sword, a square shield, a sallet, an arm prorector over the right arm and a greave relating to the left leg. The Secutores (chasers) and the Murmillones were also applying rectangular shields, sallets together with short swords; they differ mainly in the shape of the motorcycle helmet (Murmillones, for case, have high crest of the helmet with the form of a fish). Samnites, Secutors and Murmillones never fought with each other. Their opponents were usually the Retiarii who fought with weighted nets, tridents and daggers and Tertiarii (Substitutes).

The first role of the Tertiarius was as a substitute, taking the place of gladiators who had been billed to fight but were unable to accomplish this. The second role of the Tertiarius was to participate in a fight requiring a few gladiators. The first two gladiators would fight until one was defeated along with the winner would then have to fight with the third man who was simply called Tertiarius. The Tertiarii usually fight which includes a round shields and steep swords. Thracians were with a broad-rimmed helmet, smallish round shields (parma) and Thracian curved swords termed sicca. They usually fought Murmillones or Hoplomachi. The Hoplomachi (heavily armed) were fully armored and influenced by Greek hoplites. They wore helmets with stylized griffins over the crest, leg wrappings and shin-guards. They fight with Hoplite spears and small round shields. They were paired against Murmillones and also Thracians. Dimachaeri (showing two knives). These gladiators used two-swords, an individual in each hand. Gauls (Gali) : fought with lances, helmets together with Gallic shields. Velites had spears with a thong attached so they could retrieve them after some sort of throw.

Laquerii (lasso fighters) Laqueatores made use of ropes and nooses. Provocatores (challengers)- they fought with helmets without crests, large, curved rectangular shields together with swords with straight knives. They were only used against other Provocatores. The provocator was the only real gladiator to have effective protection for any upper body - some sort of rectangular breastplate. Sectur had a leather covering on his left arm and then a metal covering on his right leg and fought using a rectangular shield and a brief sword. Rudiarius was a gladiator who had won his mobility (received his wooden sword or rudis) but chooses to be able to a gladiator. Some of Rudiarii became trainers, helpers, referees, fighters or anything else. They were very favored by the public as they were experienced fabulous fighters and could be relied on to provide a good show. Scissores (carvers)used wonderful short swords called scissores. The swords had a couple blades and looked like a set of open scissors but without the need of hinge. Noxi: Criminals who fought the other, often one was blindfolded and armed against an unarmed opponent. There were also gladiators on horses like Andabatae (ascensores) which wore visored helmets without eye holes. They charged blindly at eath other on horseback. They possessed full body armour together with their only weakness have been their joints. Their weapons were round shields together with spears. Equites (horsemen) fought on horseback with a spear and gladius (small sword). They were called horsemen probably for the reason that began the fight and also entered the arena with horsebacks. However, they finished their fight by walking. Generally, the Eques only fought gladiators of his well-known type. They fought using lances. Saggitarii were mounted bowmen armed with bows together with arrows. Paegniarius Used some sort of whip, club and a cover fixed with straps to the left arm. Praegenarii used wooden swords (Rudis) together with wore wrappings around their bodies. As they fought, they were accompanied by light hearted new music using cymbals, trumpets, and a water organ (hydraulis). Essedari (war-charriot fighters) fought by walking and probably used the chariot to brew a spectacular entrance to that arena. There was also a unique group of gladiators that fought with animals. Bestiarii (animal fighters) were constantly armed with spears or even knives. They were condemned to fight beasts using a high probability of death. Venatores were specialized within wild animal hunts. Technically, they were not exactly gladiators.
