Typically, this involves copying new music or apps you have purchased on your computer to your device, making certain your calendars and tackle books match, and things like that. When iTunes syncs your device, it does not produce a backup -- this can be the surprise that bites many of us later.

    Backing up

Less frequently, iTunes will make a backup of ones device. You can tell it's happening because the iTunes status window (presents itself the iTunes window) might say "Backing up Name of your Device". This process actually tends to make a copy of your device's data from all of the apps (including your SMS app, Address Guide app, Visual Voicemail if you have it, and all of your other apps). Should you ever need to restore your device, the data out of this process is what is utilized, not syncing.

You can see when your last copy was by opening iTunes, cracking open Preferences (iTunes --> Preferences), and clicking over the devices tab. If you're unhappy with how old your backup is, you can force iTunes to generate a new backup in the main iTunes window by right-clicking to the device under "Devices" and clicking "Back Up".

    Switching Purchases

In that syncing description, I said that syncing copies music and apps that you've purchased on your hard drive to your device -- note that I didn't say a word regarding the other direction! If you purchase music and/or apps on your device, occasionally you'll want to verify these purchases are copied to iTunes on your hard drive in case something happens to your device. To copy ones purchases, right-click on the device under "Devices" in the main iTunes window and mouse click "Transfer Purchases". I just did that myself and had several songs and twelve apps that i needed to copy to iTunes.

    Backing up Your Texts/Voicemails

As i mentioned above, the iTunes backup (not necessarily sync) does back your SMS messages and unfortunately your voicemails (if you have visual voicemail enabled). However, there's not any wonderful way to view those messages with iTunes except to restore your phone from your backup. That's where Decipher TextMessage and Decipher VoiceMail are available in -- those tools, and similar software, reads the iTunes copy files and makes a unique history of your emails, including images, videos, and other files sent via MMS, so that you can view, save, copy, and print messages whenever you need them. I enjoy keeping my messages (especially my own SMS messages) backed-up in this way, because I can actually search through the history -- examine old messages between my husband and i when were dating, look at photos my friends directed me, and copy-out information that i realized I never did put to use.

I intend this little post on data protection has been helpful to you. If you have questions, we encourage want you to contact us.

If you accidentally deleted a significant text message or contact number out of your phone and need a way to ask them back then you've arrived at the right place. You see many people often ask me just how do i read deleted text messages from my phone. sms backup
