Internet Inquiry: Conversations ... - Google boksökning - 0 views

  • This collection of dialogues is the only textbook of its kind. Internet Inquiry: Conversations About Method takes students into the minds of top internet researchers as they discuss how they have worked through critical challenges as they research online social environments. Editors Annette N. Markham and Nancy K. Baym illustrate that good research choices are not random but are deliberate, studied, and internally consistent. Rather than providing single "how to" answers, this book presents distinctive and divergent viewpoints on how to think about and conduct qualitative internet studies. Key Features and Benefits Presents each chapter in the form of a question in order to provoke explicit consideration of key issues Illustrates choices made within larger disciplinary contexts to help students blend approaches, think broadly, and conduct internet research with the benefit of multiplicity Offers a range of perspectives in each chapter to vividly demonstrate that there are many ways to answer methodological challenges well Includes contributors from multiple disciplines and across the globe Provides a highly reflexive writing style that allows readers to see processes that are rarely visible in finished research reports Intended Audience This edited volume is an excellent supplementary text for a variety of advanced undergraduate and graduate courses such as Internet Research, Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods, and Computer-Mediated Communication in the departments of communication, media studies, sociology, and anthropology. It will assist new scholars as well as seasoned practitioners in this arena make informed choices in how they conduct inquiry.

  • The general aim of the course is to address new social media as means of self-creation, peer-to-peer production and social networking. The more particular aims are 1) to discuss conceptual and theoretical tools to analyse the intersections of identity formation, community building and content creation in online networked environments 2) to strengthen the participants’ analytical skills when dealing with complex and multimodal empirical data 3) to enhance analytical reflexivity when studying the everyday uses of social media.

An introduction to existing frameworks for theorizing or conceptualizing the role of technology in creating, transforming or resisting culture. The course applies elements of critical theory to explore how technology shapes and is mutually shaped by ways of thinking about the self and the world. The course also looks at how artists, feminists and non-Western thinkers have provided alternative models for theorizing the relationship between culture and technology.

Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives: John Palfrey, Urs Gass... - 0 views

  • The first generation of digital natives - children who were born into and raised in the digital world - are coming of age, and soon our world will be reshaped in their image. Our economy, our cultural life, even the shape of our family life will be forever transformed. But who are these digital natives? How are they different from older generations - or digital immigrants - and what is the world theyre creating going to look like? In Born Digital, leading internet and technology experts John Palfrey and Urs Gasser offer a sociological portrait of this exotic tribe of young people who can seem, even to those merely a generation older, both extraordinarily sophisticated and strangely narrow. Based on original research, Born Digital explores a broad range of issues, from the highly philosophical to the purely practical: What does identity mean for young people who have dozens of online profiles and avatars? Should we worry about privacy issues - or is privacy even a relevant concern for digital natives? How does the concept of safety translate into an increasingly virtual world? Is stranger-danger a real problem, or a red herring? What lies ahead - socially, professionally, and psychologically - for this generation? A smart, practical guide to a brave new world and its complex inhabitants, Born Digital will be essential reading for parents, teachers, and the myriad of confused adults who want to understand the digital present - and shape the digital future.

Amazon.com: The Internet in Everyday Life (Information Age Series): Caroline Haythornthwait... - 0 views

_The Internet in Everyday Life_ is about the second age of the Internet as it descends from the firmament and becomes embedded in everyday life. The first age of the Internet was a bright light shining above everyday concerns. In the euphoria, many analysts lost their perspective. The rapid contraction of the dot.com economy has brought down to earth the once-euphoric belief in the infinite possibility of Internet life.

It is not as if the Internet disappeared. Instead, the light that dazzled overhead has become embedded in everyday things. A reality check is now underway about where the Internet fits into the ways in which people behave offline as well as online. We are moving from a world of Internet wizards to a world of ordinary people routinely using the Internet as an embedded part of their lives. It has become clear that the Internet is a very important thing, but not a special thing. It is being used more -by more people, in more countries, in more ways.

This book is a harbinger of a new way of thinking about the Internet: not as a special system but as routinely incorporated into everyday life. The studies presented here begin the tasks of broadening our focus from the Internet to the social worlds in which it is embroiled.

The research in this book focuses on the relationship between the Internet and interpersonal relationships. It speaks to issues about the social consequences of adding the Internet to our daily lives. It explores how the Internet affects social and communal behaviors. The studies address key questions about the impact of the Internet on friendships, civic involvement, and time spent with others.
Who is online and who is coming online (and not coming)?
How much time do they spend online?
How does the Internet affect relationships within households, and with amily, friends, voluntary organizations, schoolmates, and workmates?

The research presented suggests that the Internet has accentuated a change towards a networked society: a turn

What do we mean by "community?" How do we encourage, discuss, analyze, understand, design, and participate in healthy communities in the age of many-to-many media?

With the advent of virtual communities, smart mobs, and online social networks, old questions about the meaning of human social behavior have taken on renewed significance. Although this course is grounded in theory, it is equally rooted in practice, and much of the class discussion takes place in social cyberspaces. This course requires active participation of students and a willingness to immerse in social media practuces -- mailing lists, web forums, blogs, wikis, chat, instant messaging, virtual worlds -- for a part of every weekday during the quarter. Individuals will develop personal multimedia learning journals, and small groups will use social media to produce and present projects at the end of the quarter.
