Lots of people enjoy cooking as a fun, creative, relaxing hobby. Maintaining an atmospheric kitchen with well-stocked shelves, fresh ingredients and delightful smells can put anyone into a positive frame of mind. Yet, finding the right tips and recipes to prepare a perfect meal might be difficult. The insights here will give you some tried-and-true tips for creating that masterpiece in your kitchen.

You can add a little ketchup to the batter you use to fry foods in. Ketchup isn't simply a condiment! Use it to dip your food into, prior to covering it in breadcrumbs. The ketchup imparts an unexpected, but delicious tang to your fried foods, and will have all your friends asking for your secret.

Fresh fruits, including bananas, apples and peaches will quickly turn brown if left exposed to the air after being cut open. Using lemon mixed with salt water is the common way to stop this, but pineapple juice does a better job overall. Just briefly dipping it will work, so you don't need to let the fruit soak.

Try to add some broths or other ingredients to recipes that call for liquid in place of what it asks for. As a substitute for water, try broth. Juice can work as well. Some people use the water left over from boiling vegetables. If your favorite recipes call for milk, try substituting with buttermilk, yogurt or sour cream. A simple switch like changing a liquid in a recipe can improve the nutritional quality while giving the dish a whole new spin in taste.

Make sure to include winter greens in your diet. Winter greens become sweeter tasting once the first frost is over, so indulge in collards, broccoli rabe and kale. Steer clear of greens that appear to be yellowing or limp. Instead, pick out greens that have a deep and vibrant color. Wash them carefully because greens tend to hold on to dirt easily. Lower the trimmed greens into a bowl of cold water, gently swish them in the water, and rinse them thoroughly.

When you are faced with cooking a difficult meal, prepping the night before will really reduce your stress. Always look at the recipe and do the menial tasks such as chopping and measuring in advance. Verify that you have all ingredients. When the time comes to make the meal, all you need to do is put it all together and cook it!

Don't completely drain the water after cooking pasta, save some to add to the pasta sauce. Save about one quarter cup of this water. When you are getting ready to mix the pasta and sauce together, pour in some of the water. Residual starch in the water adds volume and creaminess to the sauce of your choice.

If you're feeling stressed at the idea of making dinner for the family, consider doing much of the prep work the evening before cooking. Try preparing any required sauces, prepping vegetables, or marinating meats the evening before the meal will be cooked. You will have fewer tasks to complete when it's time to put the meal together, making it less stressful.

Do all the prep work ahead of time. This will simplify matters when you are cooking your meals. However, when you are ready to start cooking and have a deadline for when your meal needs to be finished, it can be a bit stressful. Prep work helps take the stress out of meal planning and preparing.

Cooking for a family can be more than a little overwhelming. Fortunately, there are many shortcuts and tricks to make cooking for a family quick and easy. With these tips, you can make fixing a good meal a snap.
