Any enterprise that suffers a significant data loss has a 70% chance of closing within a year.
The primary largest cause of computer data loss is due to hardware failure
The second largest cause is human error 29%
It costs little to have a good back-up and costs so much if you don't.
The Strategies.
What you will need
One machine running Windows Vista or 7 (if you run XP I'd suggest for you to download a free back up program since the backup program in XP is difficult to use)
One USB hard disk the bigger the better, try not to purchase something really pricey. Western Digital make good drives.
An online back up product. Live Mesh, Dropbox[SteelSky|Steel Sky|Steel Sky Hardened Online|SteelSky Hardened Backup|Steel Sky Online]or anything else will do. Look for security if at all possible.
The actual Instructions
Main backup
Initially we put in place our local hard disk drive back up. This really is your major backup for any kind of data loss.
Connect your USB hard drive drive to your system.
Open the Windows Backup and Restore application in Windows Control Panel.
Click "Set a Backup" and go through on-screen prompts Your machine will now search for the USB hard drive. Find the hard drive in the next window, highlight it and click Next.
Allow Windows to set the backup automatically.
Check through your settings and set up a schedule. Choose once per day at a time you won't be likely to be using the system.
Save settings and you can now run your backup.
The first backup will be the longest so run it through the night.. Later backups will be a few minutes only in most cases.

Next we put in place a back up to cloud. We cannot include all the steps as every service is different, but what we are looking to do here is to protect your most crucial computer data. Most people will be able to select all My Documents and leave it at that but you could have things in other locations so have a look through My Computer. If My Documents is extremely large, you should be able to choose individual folders within to limit the quantity of computer data you have to pay for. Set the schedule to back up each day unless you hardly ever modify anything. You're now good to go and your data will survive even the worst possible catastrophe.
Get it done today - do not wait until it's too late
Well ok, maybe tomorrow if you need to buy the USB hard drive drive, but take action as quickly as possible after you have made the purchase, this is not something to put on your "someday, maybe" list. A computer backup is the next most important thing to do. Anti-virus needs to be the first thing you set up on a new machine.

Don't ever break these rules.
Never, ever allow essential data to exist on only one hard disk drive drive.
Backup everything important once per week at least.
