Mljet, often referred to as the most beautiful island in the Adriatic, offers some truly incredible attractions, such as a two gorgeous saltwater lakes - one of which has a tiny island housing a 14th century Benedictine monastery. Holidays are a time to relax and recharge your batteries but for some people, the prospect of two weeks lying on a beach is the stuff of nightmares. If you enjoy the sun but feel that a fortnight sunbathing isn't much of a challenge, try something a bit different.

Spain with its warm climate is the perfect place to enjoy an activity holiday. Activity holidays don't have to involve physical exertion, you can still chill out but at the same time be doing something you enjoy. There are activity holidays covering everything from horse riding to painting, yoga, photography, cooking, walking, cycling and much more.

The region of Andalucia in the south of Spain is known for its vibrant colour and light and is the ideal place to learn how to paint or to improve your artistic skills. There are various painting holidays available in the area ranging from beginners courses to advanced. The holidays are for small groups of people and include full board and excursions but exclude flights. These Andalucian painting holidays are a great way of meeting other like minded people and friendships develop quickly in the informal atmosphere.

If you prefer something a bit more physical, take your pick from a wide variety of Spanish walking holidays. The region of Aragon in northern Spain is an area of outstanding natural beauty with mountains, rivers, forests and meadows. This area is extremely popular with hikers and horse riders and there are a number of companies specialising in these and other activities. Other popular regions for walkers are Andalucia and Catalonia but if you're looking for the ultimate challenge, its hard to beat the Camino Frances, the ancient pilgrims route which terminates in the medieval city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Today, there are Pilgrim's walking holidays available on many of the routes which meander across Spain including the Camino Portuguese which starts on the border of Portugal and the northern way which follows coastal paths through some stunning scenery.

Another fascinating way to see parts of Spain which are off the beaten track are railway holidays. Great Railway Journeys is one company specialising in railway holidays across Europe. They have a number of holidays available in Spain which include the La Robla express which travels from Gijon to the coast of Galicia, an excellent way to take in the rugged scenery of northern Spain from the comfort of a train. For something exotic, try the Marrakech Express which takes in some of Spain's most important historic cities on the way to Morocco.

Interest in Spanish food has taken off in the past five years with tapas bars springing up all over the world. Holidays teaching authentic Spanish cooking in Spain are gaining in popularity and there are a number of excellent cooking holidays available. Amongst the ones we looked at, were a well established cooking holiday based in Extremadura, one of Spain's most remote regions which features cooking from, Portugal and North Africa as well as Spain. These holidays are for small groups of people and take place in an informal atmosphere, prices usually include full board.
