    Public Cloud Computing

It doesn't matter whether a public cloud or private cloud infastructure, everyone agrees that cloud computing enviroments key benefits include scalability, immediate provisioning, virtualized resources and the ability to expand the server resources quickly.

Be aware, "cloud computing" is nevertheless used to mean a lot of things to a lot of businesses. When it comes to slicing up the cloud computing taxonomy a little further, there's still quite a bit of confusion between the couple.

The public cloud consist of a multi-tenant environment, where you buy a "server slice" within a cloud infastructure environment that's shared with all kinds of other clients or tenants.

Public cloud infastructures which include Amazon EC2 and HP Cloud Services have a number of trade-offs:

    • Power Company Model - Public cloud infastructures typically deliver some sort of pay-as-you-go model, where you pay by the hour for the compute resources you use. This is an economical path to take if you're ramping up & tearing down development servers constantly.

    • No Contracts - With the utility model, you're only paying per hour - if you want to shut down your server when only 2 hours of usage, there is no contract requiring your ongoing entry to the server.

    • Shared Hardware - Because the public cloud infastructure is by definition a multi-tenant environment, your server shares the same hardware, storage and network devices just the same as other tenants in that cloud. Meeting compliance requirements, such as PCI and SOX, is not possible in the public cloud infastructure.

    • No Control of Hardware Performance - Inside public cloud, you can not choose the hardware, cache or storage space performance (SATA and SAS). Your cloud server is positioned on whatever hardware and network, the public cloud provider designates in your case.

    • Self Managed - while using the high volume, utility pricing model, self managed systems need for this business model to make sense. Advantage here for the technical buyers that wish to setup and manage the important points of their servers. Disadvantage for those that want a truly managed solution.

The majority of public cloud deployments are generally used for web servers or development systems where by security and compliance prerequisites of larger organizations and their customers is not an issue.

Private cloud infastructure, in contrast, by definition is a single-tenant environment where the hardware, storage and network specialize in a single client or company.

It also has a number of trade-offs:

    • Security - Because private clouds are dedicated to a single business, the hardware, data storage and network can be designed to assure high levels of security that cannot end up accessed by other clients in the same data center.

    • Complying - Sarbanes Oxley, PCI and HIPAA compliance can not be delivered through a public cloud deployment. Because this hardware, storage and network configuration is focused on a single client, compliance is notably easier to achieve.

    • Individualized - Hardware effectiveness, network effectiveness and storage effectiveness will be specified and customized inside private cloud infastructure.

    • Hybrid Deployments - If a dedicated server must run a high speed database application, that hardware can be integrated into a private cloud, in effect, hybridizing the perfect solution is between virtual servers together with dedicated servers. This can't be performed in a public cloud.

Compared to public clouds, private cloud infastructures may not be delivered through a power company model or pay-as-you-go basis because the hardware is dedicated. Private cloud infastructures usually are preferred by mid together with large size enterprises as they meet the security and compliance needs of these larger businesses and their clients.
