A traditional white board, flip chart or chalk board only allows the source of information to be the teacher. Though the teacher can integrate the ideas of others, the content is mediated by the teacher's hand. An interactive whiteboard system allows for the integration of sources, pulling related material from the web, and "layering" content in order to highlight relationships. This is still mediated by the teacher, but the breadth of sources is dramatically increased, and thus the potential for knowledge building.

You are assuming that the person at the IWB or the traditional whiteboard/flip chart/chalk board is a teacher - the "sage on the stage". On the other hand, what if the user was a learner or a group of learners? Furthermore, what if the material these learners were working with was initiated by the teacher, but the learners have been instructed to "work through" what is there? Or, what if the learners where the ones who were creating the material and the teacher had nothing to do with the creation at all? Do any of these scenarios have certain implications for the potential of knowledge building?

Whereas traditional methods can be seen as more monologic, the layers allow for a dialogic approach - that is, the content is in conversation with a much wider range of ideas, it is contextualized, disrupted and examined by new sets of data and new circumstances.

Although the layered content is set up to make relationships, careful guidance through this process needs the strong presence of an educator. The tool simply allows the teacher to shift the focus of learning to the much-needed skill of making connections/knowledge building, leaving smaller lessons like the use and navigation of web technology or the manipulation of software a side-effect of the main learning.

I think you're onto something bigger here Denise! Some education researchers (Garrison, Anderson & Archer; 2000) have come up with a "Community of Inquiry" model and they say that the interrelationships between: (1) technology, (2) pedagogy of teaching/learning, and (3) content subject-matter are key to the successful and meaningful integration of technology in learning. KMD2003 Question: What do you think is the most crucial characteristics or power of Diigo that makes it a potential "game changer"?

Surely the degree of convenient collaboration is impressive. But are we moving toward a "wisdom of the crowds" phenomenon in our interpretation of everything we read. Will this approach thoroughly homogenize our interpretation of literature? Will this be a sort of "Coles notes" for high school students, who may take the short cut of reading these comments rather than forming their own opinions? Are we making access to opinions far too easy?

I share the concerns of you, Andrea. But I see the power of Diigo from the point that we can be more exposed to other people's ideas when we are reading which might be helpful in constructing our own understanding, although it comes with the possibilities of being annoyed by nonsense or unexpected notes. If we are really annoyed by those public notes, we can definitely turn them off. Also, since online reading seems to change people's reading habit, I really have no idea whether future people will like this social way of reading or not.

I agree with both of you that the sticky notes could both be a help and a hinderance but overall I like the idea of Diigo and all the layers it offers. I think it adds to our learning and knowledge. Often I'll read articles and wonder other peoples opinions and if I want to get them I have to e-mail the article to a friend and wait for a response but this way on Diigo and I can find out what others thought almost instantly. On the flip side I agree with Andrea, it might make things just a little too easy for accessing information and opinions.

As you read, you will know that at any given moment, a conversation is available about the paragraph or even sentence you are reading. Nobody will read alone anymore. Reading books will go from being a fundamentally private activity — a direct exchange between author and reader — to a community event, with every isolated paragraph the launching pad for a conversation with strangers around the world.

My concern with this idea that "nobody will read alone anymore" is the possibility that we will not be able to read thoughtfully, carefully and insightfully, because we'll be so curious to impress, or hear other opinions before we've fully cooked our own. Not sure reading needs to be such a public exercise always.

I agree with you Andrea but also think it lends people the opportunity to do what we've been doing in classrooms for years. It enables people to discuss books with others as they are reading it. I mean most often when I read, I read with a pencil in my hand, I view this as not that different for me personally. I guess though the difference is that other will be ableto read my comments and as you say I might think more about what I am writing in my book if others are reading it in order to impress them... pros and cons, as always!!

I think, aside from just reading and posting on articles Diigo could be good for posting on interesting pictures or videos to provide extra information. I think it would also be good in virtual tours to add an element to the tour the viewer might not get from the images alone. It would also be handy on any "how to" tool to add an extra element such as in a recipe it could advise that the actual recipe actually calls for way too much flour and a little sticky note could tell you that and a better measurement to add.

Diigo will allow many functions to remain online, without the trouble of printing and editing. Diigo affords the online space much greater interactivity.

I think Diigo will help to expand peoples learning opportunities. I introduced Diigo to my Dad and he fell in love. He is a huge fan of watching TV with his laptop so he can look up anything and everything he might have a question about and then share the information with my mom and I. With Diigo he gets this added layer of information or opinion he now shares with us too!

I think a "pop-up" feature might be neat. Like if you're reading along and at the end of the sentence there is a pop-up button to click on if you want more information or even to take you to the source, like an active footnote.

I think these highlights sum it up: LIS (or specifically GIS in our case) is a technological tool for comprehending geography and making intelligent decisions. It is very interactive in that you can add layers, and select certain layers that you wish to view, and it mashes real world information with various criteria in order to explore the complexities of our world.

#1: mashups bring together seemingly disperate sources to encourage the viewer to make connections across data sources. For the most part, they are very unassuming about the knowledge they guarantee the learner will go away with, so they force the learner to make conclusions on their own. This can be good if the learner is curious, has enough background with the topic to make inferences or even ask questions; but problematic if the relationship is not clear or the presentation is overwhelming or the learner simply doesn't know enough to make the connections on her own. #2: I can imagine reading a historical piece of literature, for example, and having wikipedia links to keywords or events, data pulled in from critics digitally (much like traditional literary reviews/annotations) and or even a map on the side of the page of where events are happening in the novel (assuming it is a historical piece). Adding in these additional layers will give the literature more depth and make reading it more interesting, perhaps, instead of reading the text in a vaccuum.

The different layers in web mashup technologies are combined to create a new service or source of information that otherwise would not be available to users/learners. As the mashup combines typically unrelated layers, I think it can also enable thinking/learning that expands across multiple disciplines and fosters deeper, more sophisticated understandings and more innovative approaches to problem-solving. Question #2 What new web mashup designs can you conceive of, that could facilitate learning? Need to think a bit more on this one, but in the meantime...the links I included in the sticky note below offer different examples.
