You can't expect, though, for the person to stop all friendly contact with the people they worked with before getting promoted. The worst thing is if the manager makes it obvious that there is a barrier between them. Everybody understands the new dynamic, but just be careful that you do not alienate your friends or yourself.

    There is the principle that 20% of the people in a group will do 80% of the work. That is true in just about all situations, and you can use that to your advantage. Identify these 20% within your department but don't saddle them with all of the work. Just figure out who they are so that you can give them more responsibility. But you should make those additional responsibilities important and within their capabilities. In time people will figure out what is going on, and you can help others to elevate themselves on their own accord.

It's why you need to be as flexible as you can and learn how to change gears quickly if you need to. You also need to figure out how to prove that you are managerial in both your style and your presence. What matters is that you are as consistent as possible as you go about your daily duties.
