    What exactly is Transmission?
    Transmissions change engine power into car movement. But they do much more. A transmission is not merely a mechanical device, nevertheless almost a "thinking" product. An engine runs best just a specific RPM range, obtaining optimum fuel economy and lower engine stress. The transmission must not only deliver power on the vehicle'™s wheels, but undertake it while keeping the engine running at the favorable RPM. Rather than engine power simply flowing to your wheels, the transmission first pulls it through finely tuned gearsets and measures factors including motor RPM level, driving direction and speed, and then sends the newly harnessed power in the drivetrain, turning the wheels.

    How do Transmissions Succeed?

    - Computer Controls

    Planetary gearsets could be the key to how the transmission works. The number of planetary gearsets within the transmission varies contingent on how many speeds it gives. Three components make up only one planetary gearset: the ring gear, the planet gears and also the sun gear. As this name suggests, the sun gear centers the gearset, along with the planet gears "revolving" around it. The ring gear wraps itself completely for the sun and planet gears, holding the entire process together. The ring gear also transfers the power from the engine in the planet gears, driving these, and in turn driving the sun gear.

    Things now complicated. The sun gear is not directly connected to the transmission's output shaft (if it were, the vehicle could not sit idle without going). Instead, a clutch pack forms a controllable bond relating to the planetary gearset and the output shaft. Highly pressurized transmission fluid activates this clutch pack, squeezing the clutch plates inside the pack together and allowing the shifting process. To enable engine idling, the clutch activates, or "tells" the clutch pack to push out a the sun gear, breaking the controllable bond between it along with the output shaft. Now the engine can turn the sun gear without propelling your vehicle.

    Today's six, seven and in many cases eight-speed automatic transmissions include a mind-boggling range of gearsets combined in various ways. Tracing the flow associated with engine power through that maze of moving parts and pressurized transmission fluid can baffle even the most seasoned mechanics.
