The Kübler-Ross grief cycle - 0 views

  • A common problem with the above cycle is that people get stuck in one phase.
Thus a person may become stuck in denial, never moving on from the position of
not accepting the inevitable future. When it happens, they still keep on denying
it, such as the person who has lost their job still going into the city only to
sit on a park bench all day.

    • Jim Brinling

I've know some people who were not able to overcome the initial denial. Do you know of someone who cannot get over their loss?
  • Jim Brinling

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross was a doctor in Switzerland who railed against this unkindness and spent a lot of time with dying people, both comforting and studying them. She wrote a book, called 'On Death and Dying' which included a cycle of emotional states that is often referred to (but not exclusively called) the Grief Cycle.

  • Many of our greatest poets and orators have been Artisans, from Lord Byron to
Dylan Thomas to Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan. Why? Why not the Idealists
in the forefront, instead of only a few, along with but a handful of Rationals?
It has to be conceded that the Artisans have captured most of the top spots in
this domain because of their sensitivity to harmonic coherence, or what sounds
good. The Artisans' ear for sound is incomparable.

"My concern has always been for the people who are victimized, unable to
speak for themselves and who need outside help."

"Instead of getting hard ourselves and trying to compete, women should try
and give their best qualities to men - bring them softness, teach them how to
    cry."

  • Looking back as he reflected about his life, Dylan explains himself in his own
words: "An artist has to be careful to never really arrive at a place where he
thinks he's at, somewhere. You always have to realize you are constantly in a
state of becoming, as long as you can stay in that realm, you will sort of be
alright. I can't self-analyze my own work, and I wasn't going to cater to the
crowd because I knew certain people like it or didn't like it. I got in the door
when nobody was looking. I was in there now, and there was nothing anybody from
then on could ever do about it."
    • Gindy J

Bob Dylan was an oddist and an artist as well. you could give him anything and he could make something out of it. it might not have been very useful but it would have a subliminal or very clear message intwined in it. he and i have very common ideals and thoughts. the universe and its actions tend to unfold as it shoud in the end. good or bad it always leaves an impact on the people it targets.

    • Jim Brinling

This is important because it identifies characteristics of the idealist.
  • Idealists are sure that friendly cooperation is the best way for people to
achieve their goals. Conflict and confrontation upset them because they seem to
put up angry barriers between people. Idealists dream of creating harmonious,
even caring personal relations, and they have a unique talent for helping people
get along with each other and work together for the good of all.

  • While some games have educational content, many of the most popular games

    • the killing of people or animals
    • the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol
    • criminal behavior, disrespect for authority and the law

Talks about video games that arent educational and may corrupt
  • Children and adolescents can become overly involved and even obsessed with
videogames. Spending large amounts of time playing these games can create
    problems and lead to:

    • poor social skills
    • time away from family time, school-work, and other hobbies
    • lower grades and reading less
    • exercising less, and becoming overweight
    • aggressive thoughts and behaviors
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Parents can help their children enjoy these games and avoid problems by:

    • checking the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings to learn
      about the game’s content.
    • selecting appropriate games—both in content and level of development.
    • playing videogames with their children to experience the game’s content.
    • setting clear rules about game content and playing time, both in and outside
      of your home.
    • strongly warning children about potential serious dangers of Internet
contacts and relationships while playing games online.

Violent Video Games - Psychologists Help Protect Children from Harmful Effects - 0 views

  • Drs. Anderson and Gentile's research shows
    that children are spending increasing

    amounts
of time playing video games - 13 hours per week for boys, on average,

and 5 hours per week for girls
    (
Anderson, Gentile, & Buckley, under review; Gentile, Lynch, Linder,
& Walsh, 2004). A 2001 content analyses by the research organization
Children Now shows that a majority of video games include violence, about half
of which would result in serious injuries or death in the 'real' world. Children
often say their favorite video games are violent. What is the result of all this
    video game mayhem?
  • Parents have an important role to play.
    Psychologists have found that when

    parents
limit the amount of time as well as the types of games their children

play, children are less likely to show
    aggressive behaviors (Anderson et al.,

    under
    review; Gentile et al., 2004).
    Other research suggests that active
parental involvement in children's media usage-including discussing the
inappropriateness of violent solutions to real life conflicts, reducing time
spent on violent media, and generating alternative nonviolent solutions to
problems-all can reduce the impact of media violence on children and youth
