Yes, students will be given an opportunity to collaborate online. A possibility could be the google doc chat as a meeting spot, then figuring out how to break up the assignment. Content, visuals, upload, audio, cameras, etc. are all options the students will want to consider in their meetings. The chats will be saved and posted, so that students in a group can go back and review what taks they are expected to contribute. I think that the discussion board can be kind of a form of extra points/participation. Although one must consider the content they are posting on the discussion board, it isn't a very difficult assignment, as much at it is tedious. So I think extra points would help balance grades and everything. I was going off the model of how our class is run with the discussion being for points. Is that still appropriate? Can an instructional actiivty not have assessment incorporated into it? I think the discussion board is a great place to evaluate understanding and the mastery of the subject. - Hassiba Boumerzoug

Peer evaluation is the most important part of the evaluation process. This training is meant as a professional development, giving many of our teachers some of their first views of online learning and Web 2.0 technologies. As they are working together, the peer evaluation is important so that they may assess each other as team members. Finally, the peer evaluations, from the other grade levels, will promote learning as ideas are shared through the presentation. I can also asses how well the group was able to collaborate and if there were any issues or problems i.e. was everyone participating equally and was everyone attending meetings on a regular basis. For the links, the district has developed a list of links for content areas that area available to teachers. I will also provide the learners with a list of links that they may find useful. As for the videos they can search Discovery Education, TeacherTube, or other ones that they find. Students will need to be able to cite for Copyright where they found the video. That's a really good point. As all of the activities are online but the instruction is face-to-face, that hasn't been an issue... other than with poor attendance, for a significant number of students they don't get that modeling and direct instruction. So even though it's not a fully online class, it may make sense to treat it as one and include modeling as video tutorials. I do model a couple of tricky tasks (uploading and sharing links) but I should create a video to model each activity for students that miss the fact-to-face modeling. Thanks. - Christopher Van Dyke

I would suggest that the guidelines ensure nice discussion, not sarcastic or demeaning, that questions be encouraged or required to ensure dialogue and that a project be assigned to stimulate collaboration toward a designated goal. - Dennis Olson
Discussions should be guided with a set of questions appropriate to the content. The structure of student initial response should be defined in addition to the responses students give to other students. This will ensure that students stay on topic and make the appropriate number of responses to other students. Students can provide an initial response, respond to other students, and then generate one or two questions for other students. Yes I agree Google Docs is an excellent source for provided documentation, background information, readings, and other forms that students can have joint access to. The CMS or LMS discussion tools, both live chat and asynchronous functions, are better tools for collaboration. This would be a required portion of the assignment that would be outlined on the response rubric. Students would need to participate in the discussion a specific amount of times either though responses or original posts. - Stacie Georgen
I've done rubrics of what I how many points can be earned depending on number of posts and quality of posts. I found this to be helpful when I was giving them scores. The kids were positive about what I was doing and so were parents. It eliminated a lot of questions. - Kirsten Harder

Elluminate is a tool for recording presentations Beth. Michael, this would be for an online class that does not meet face to face. I could use those tools you have listed if I had any idea what they were. If they are easier to use than Elluminate then I would actually prefer to use them. Unfortunately, I have never heard of them let alone used them.

I am using Elluminate for this project so that the other students in the class can actually view the full presentation made by each of the other groups. This allows all students to learn about the other disorders. - Ty Coulter

I really like Wikis and think it is great way to encourage collaboration and interactions. How would you manage the roles in assigning the students to "write group paper on Wiki pages..."? One of the difficulties that can occur when grouping is one student takes over and does most of the work. What would you do to avoid this? - anonymous
Wikis are good for many activities but I'm not sure how effective they would be for writing a paper. Google docs might be more effective for this type of assignment. - Ty Coulter
Wikis might be combined with other multimedia activities that allow students to integrate video, audio, and other web 2.0 tools right into the wiki. Students might also collaborate on the construction of such an assignment. - Jeremy Ashely

Collaboration through Prezi can be synchronous or asynchronous depending on the activity and the groups need. Multiple learners are able to manipulate the presentation at one time, thus, creating synchronous communication and collaboration. Additionally, presentations are saved through Prezi and members are able to access the link to edit the presentation at their leisure, thus, making the communication and colalboration asynchronous. - Sarah Gagliardi

Learner-learner interaction is the primary instructional strategy. Much of what we learn and build upon in social media for business depends on past examples of successes and failures. There is no exact science involved, and we must continue to try and test new approaches to continue to build upon what successes others have demonstrated, making a better experience for all. The use of a blog allows other students and the instructor to comment on the posts and ask questions of the blogger. Other authoring tools can be used as the instructor sees fit. The discussion board is for students to ask questions and leave feedback or helpful links for other students and the teacher. Students (individually) read a preselected selections of blogs, choose one blog topic and form a small group with others who chose the same selection. Students then research the topic of that blog, finding primary and secondary sources, to determine the validity of the blog (how much is fact and how much is opinion). The student's then create their own wiki page on the topic, addressing the pro's and cons, facts vs rumors and opinions, insert relevant photos or diagrams, and formulate their own conclusions on the topic.

I think having the students prepare a presentation for the school board is an excellent idea. I believe their presentation would be more powerful than any higher level presenter. Just imagine the students creating a presentation about their school's current technology. They would support their request for more hardware/software and the training that goes with it for both the student and teachers. Just imagine! I may use this technique someday when I get in power. Not sure the grade level, but it would take it to a synthesis level if the students had to create an environment for an animal that currently does not live at the zoo. That might make it a bit more interactive, if the students had to create some type of online diagram as a pair, and possibly get peer feedback. I did not know they had be activities we actually did. I was brainstorming creative applications and came up with this activity. This reminds me of all the excitement surrounding video conferencing years back. There have been initiatives to create a gateway or portal of people that want to interact via this technology. To make this happen would require a similar type initiative to make it sustainable I suppose.

I think you are right though, it would be better in small groups as one to one may not lend itself to enough veterans able to participate. I will update my entry.
