Comments:

ETC 677 L5 Discussion - Jane Chu

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Project-base

Could you elaborate why project-based learnign is related? Additionally, what technology is related to your project-based learning? Be specific on your justifications. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

I was considering the museum box as the project, creating an artifact. Do you think it is too small to be considered project-based? - johnacedo

Throughout the course participants will complete a project based LibGuide that will support their curriculum standards and enhance their instruction in all subject areas. Participants will compile online resources to create LibGuides, a tool for teachers to organize content and/or projects to target the most appropriate resources in all subject areas and publish as educator’s own webpage. Participants will use online resources including library catalogs, database, virtual libraries, and Web 2.0 to create a LibGuide. The activity will focus on providing teachers with technology tools to support educators and learners in an increasingly digital society. - Jane Chu

Using group collaboration, students will create a Youtube Video that instructs you how to use video as a teaching method.

How students will create teh YouTube video collaborativelly? Collaborate online? If yes, how? Be specific. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

Yes, students will be given an opportunity to collaborate online. A possibility could be the google doc chat as a meeting spot, then figuring out how to break up the assignment. Content, visuals, upload, audio, cameras, etc. are all options the students will want to consider in their meetings. The chats will be saved and posted, so that students in a group can go back and review what taks they are expected to contribute. Do you have any other suggestions other than google doc as a good meeting place for a chat? - Hassiba Boumerzoug

Discussion Board

Please more specific. Why discussion board is an assessment part? Why it is not part of your instructional activities? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

I think that the discussion board can be kind of a form of extra points/participation. Although one must consider the content they are posting on the discussion board, it isn't a very difficult assignment, as much at it is tedious. So I think extra points would help balance grades and everything. I was going off the model of how our class is run with the discussion being for points. Is that still appropriate? Can an instructional actiivty not have assessment incorporated into it? I think the discussion board is a great place to evaluate understanding and the mastery of the subject. - Hassiba Boumerzoug

In this activity, participants need to complete a WebQuest to compile online resources. Since this is a group project, and utilizing discussion board to share resources and brainstorming ideas can be a strategy to reach the goal of completing the group project. - Jane Chu

Discussion board is essential to online distributed learning environments. It offers an opportunity to enhance collaboration and interaction. - danielramos

Google Docs(Updated discussion and questions),

Why use Google Docs for discussions? Why not use other discussion tools? Please justify! - Chih-Hsiung Tu

The beauty of sharing resources with Google Docs is it lets you collaborate on various file formats such as documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Google Docs also enables participants in different locations to collaborate simultaneously on the same doc from any computer with Internet access. So it provides the convenience for people to share document with multiple e-mails attachment again. - Jane Chu

Students can use Google Docs to respond to their peers through email verses a designated system. This allows teachers who do not have access to LMS/CMS systems to be able to have their students discuss materials. They are also able to share documents versus just adding to a post. Finally, you can have instant conversations using Google Docs, which allows for better communication and collaboration. - Kim Weidner

Easy to share with classmates and instructors. Google has trutly changed online distributed learning environments by providing this FREE tools for us to use. It can be access from anywhere and make changes to it from anywhere as well. - danielramos

Discussion boardVoice Thread

Why use both? At the jr high that I teach at, core subject teachers are "teamed" together. Likewise, sharing with a peer is publishing, but it's limited to an additional viewer/commentator (the peer reviewer). I wanted to place the emphasis on the learner-learner as opposed to student publishing. - Christopher Van Dyke

Peer evaluation (peer review of portfolio before submission)

Since you integrate portfolio, any reason not to integrate online refelction? However, there is no group interaction built into this course. To be more effective as a strictly online course (currently it's a hybrid of online activities conducted face-to-face) there would need to be those synchronous and asynchronous group components. - Christopher Van Dyke

Peer evaluations

Please jsutify how and why peer evaluation is integrated. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

Peer evaluation is the most important part of the evaluation process. This training is meant as a professional development, giving many of our teachers some of their first views of online learning and Web 2.0 technologies. As they are working together, the peer evaluation is important so that they may assess each other as team members. Finally, the peer evaluations, from the other grade levels, will promote learning as ideas are shared through the presentation. The other participants will also be evaluating the other projects, giving them an increased opportunity to evaluate Web 2.0 technologies. - Eldon Ferguson

peer evaluation is integrated because I am able to determine accountability. I can also asses how well the group was able to collaborate and if there were any issues or problems i.e. was everyone participating equally and was everyone attending meetings on a regular basis. One group can also evaluate another groups work so that group can have another perspective the project that they have created. - Kim Weidner

Inquiry based learning

Please explain how and why inquiry-based learning is integrated into your design? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

The participants will be independently researching the necessary information. As all of the activities are online but the instruction is face-to-face, that hasn't been an issue... other than with poor attendance, for a significant number of students they don't get that modeling and direct instruction. So even though it's not a fully online class, it may make sense to treat it as one and include modeling as video tutorials. I do model a couple of tricky tasks (uploading and sharing links) but I should create a video to model each activity for students that miss the fact-to-face modeling.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Online Instructional strategies: Students will engage in online discussion, analyze in a collaborative nature wealth statistics, learner-learner interaction, learner-content interaction, Learner-interface interaction, and self reflection.

Agree! Online discussion activities could be effecitve way to engage learners in interactive communciation and learning. As we know, simply just ask students would be resolve in effective online discussions. What guidelines and designs would you have to enrue online discussions effective, particularly, learner-learner interaction and collaboration. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

I would suggest that the guidelines ensure nice discussion, not sarcastic or demeaning, that questions be encouraged or required to ensure dialogue and that a project be assigned to stimulate collaboration toward a designated goal. - Dennis Olson

Discussions should be guided with a set of questions appropriate to the content. The structure of student initial response should be defined in addition to the responses students give to other students. This will ensure that students stay on topic and make the appropriate number of responses to other students. There should also be some leeway for students to address additional topics, concerns, and/or issues. - Jeremy Ashely

The other class members ask & answer questions posed by the students in their presentation.

How? In what whay studnets will ask questions? Required? Be more specific. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

How could this part of the instructional strategies be worked into assessment? Peer evaluations? Could the learners contribute to the assessment process? - Michael Wolfe

One way to possibly tie the learners into the evaluation process would be have students write down presentation questions and have the presenters answer them using examples from their presentation information. Peer evaluations are great if they include both positives and constructive critisim. - Sarah Gagliardi

Students may be asked to produced a structured response to the overall topic of the discussion. Students can provide an initial response, respond to other students, and then generate one or two questions for other students. Students in there responses to other students might be asked to answer one of the student generated questions as well as respond to other students. - Jeremy Ashely

Online collaboration and Learner-Learner interaction.

Be more specific on how these two instrcutioanl strategies are integrated into your activities to help us understand your better. - Chih-Hsiung Tu

student to student interaction with collaboration through google docs.

Google docs offer great resources for students to collaborate together, what will they be doing with the google docs? - Beth Koepp

I recognize that collaboration on a document in Google Docs is quite easy but I prefer using email or group discussions to lay the ground work for the collaboration done in Google Docs. - Dennis Olson

Yes I agree Google Docs is an excellent source for provided documentation, background information, readings, and other forms that students can have joint access to. The CMS or LMS discussion tools, both live chat and asynchronous functions, are better tools for collaboration. Elluminate is another excellent option for facilitating discussion and other forms of collaboration. - Jeremy Ashely

Harder, Kirsten

Where is your contributions? Michael, this would be for an online class that does not meet face to face. I could use those tools you have listed if I had any idea what they were. If they are easier to use than Elluminate then I would actually prefer to use them. Unfortunately, I have never heard of them let alone used them.

I am using Elluminate for this project so that the other students in the class can actually view the full presentation made by each of the other groups. This allows all students to learn about the other disorders. - Ty Coulter

I know a teacher who used Elluminate for this type of project and it worked great and the students could refer back to it throughout the unit. Multiple learners are able to manipulate the presentation at one time, thus, creating synchronous communication and collaboration. Additionally, presentations are saved through Prezi and members are able to access the link to edit the presentation at their leisure, thus, making the communication and colalboration asynchronous. - Sarah Gagliardi

This sounds like an activity that you could use for a face-to-face class or an online class with just a few adjustments. - Kirsten Harder

In our group all communication was asychronous for this project which was blogger based. Yes, the Google Docs should be in the the delivery technology category. It is used for the other groups to respond to the Prezi. - anonymous

Great use of a delivery tool like Google Docs for feedback of the Prezi. - Dennis Olson

Students learn how to create a strategy and develop supporting tactics to effectively represent a business using social media such as Facebook or Twitter.

Interesting ideas! What you have here are activities? What are you online instructional strategies? Please identy them clearly. Much of what we learn and build upon in social media for business depends on past examples of successes and failures. There is no exact science involved, and we must continue to try and test new approaches to continue to build upon what successes others have demonstrated, making a better experience for all. This is truly an example of constructivist learning at its best. - Natalie Vaughn

Would this be another description of brainstorming? One of the best ways to learn something is to teach it is what I have always heard.

Comments:

Nancy,
I I like your assignment using the Newspaper. i find this is a great way for them to learn community and worldly events/news. I use to do something like this in the classroom, if they finish their assignment (instead of bugging other students) they write a summary of a newspaper article.
Your assignment is great because it involves research, technology, and writing skills. Do they research the newspaper sites as well or what its the objective on that? - Wendy Sue Grieg0

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

James,
At what level is this activity? Do they have access to the blog outside of school? Is this like a WebQuest with specific site they are to search? - Barbara Miroballi

Hi Ruth, I love the idea of creating a visual image of the newspaper article--so often expository writing is difficult to conceptualize for students. How do you plan to make the activity both asynchronous and synchronous? - Nancy Mitchell

Hi Nancy-

Thanks for the compliment. Expository writing is difficult to teach and write. I am a very visual person and doing activities like this always helps me process information easier. I planned to have students collbaorate on the newspaper component through a chat and discussion board. They will also be using those features in creating their presentation. Finally, they will publish their final project. - Ruthee John

Your assignment is great because it involves research, technology, and writing skills. Students locate the blog section, read the content, and choose one area to develop a mini-research activity. Once the content has been chosen, groups of five will collaborate on a mini-research project. They need to find a theme to research that correlates with the blog content and answer who, what, where, when, and why. After researching the content, they each write a one page mini research paper on their assigned section and post it to the blog. Students must then interact with other learners on the blog by commenting about similarities, differences, or new ideas they read.

Very godo design for online interactive instructions.

Is it a class blog or group blog? Any drawing program can be used but Sketch up is so user friendly my 9 year old uses it. The blog is intended to be an online journal for students to reflect on the process of building their dream house. The use of a blog allows other students and the instructor to comment on the posts and ask questions of the blogger. Other authoring tools can be used as the instructor sees fit. The discussion board is for students to ask questions and leave feedback or helpful links for other students and the teacher. The wiki is for organizing the research of the eco-friendly materials and energy efficient prodicts that can be used in the house. - Sammi Lindstrom

Ruth,
I find the 'who, what, where, when, & why' are good starting points for analysis of a subject/topic. Final product is to be a team paper with each member putting his conclusions regarding advantages and limitations of the tool from the team discussion in a team Google doc.

Why not ask groups to give online presentation engage them in more interactive peer evaluation? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

That would be an excellent strategy.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Hi Emily,
Great application. A good follow up might be to concentrate on a reflection of which questions worked best and have student generated questions shared amongst the class. The class can vote on the most effective ones and discuss why face to face or perhaps virtually. Do you think this would work? A collegues recently mentioned the following, if you have not seen it may be uesful:
http://www.bookglutton.com/ - stephenroth

I was also thinking this was a great project! I love skype! I like the reflection idea, that would add an even more interactive aspect- especially if you use a blog or something so that students from both schools can participate! - Erin Rain

Thanks, friends! It worked VERY well with my third graders especially. I like the bookglutton website...very helpful! It was a GREAT tool for differentiation! :) - Emily Stewart

Suzanne,

Simple WebQuest is not considered as "interactive" design. In fact, it is more in active or expository level. Could you justify on this? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

I think I was thinking that the students were working together to create a zoo and that would make it interactive? I might be confused though. I usually am.... - Suzanne Brazzell

Suzanne,
I think having the students prepare a presentation for the school board is an excellent idea. I believe their presentation would be more powerful than any higher level presenter. Just imagine the students creating a presentation about their school's current technology. They would support their request for more hardware/software and the training that goes with it for both the student and teachers. Just imagine! I may use this technique someday when I get in power. Maybe, I'll have the students prepare a video? Thanks for the idea. - Pat Agrait

Hi Suzanne!

Not sure the grade level, but it would take it to a synthesis level if the students had to create an environment for an animal that currently does not live at the zoo. That might make it a bit more interactive, if the students had to create some type of online diagram as a pair, and possibly get peer feedback. Just a thought...still unsure of the grade level though, and the standard/objective being addressed! :) - Emily Stewart

Michelle, Could you justify why your design is related online collaborative learning, project-based learning, and student publishing? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

The learning experience is collaborative (interactive) as there is continual interaction via Skype & Elluminate (synchronous) and email (asynchronous) throughout the semester. They were creating a script on Google Docs for their skit. - Pat Agrait

Pat,

Very interesting activity. I wonder your activity is more Constructivist or more Connectivism/ONLE/PLE?

How will distinguish both learning paradigm? - Chih-Hsiung Tu

I usually implement the Constructivist theory and their suggested strategies in my pedagogy. I can support the Constructionist strategies with Conectivistism strategies. I do not believe they are mutually exclusive. My intent is to make the content, or in this case, empower the learner to make the content more accessible to themselves and others. Am I wrong to use both theories and strategies when designing learning activities? - Pat Agrait

Steve,
Your activity really brings experiences to life for your students. I was brainstorming creative applications and came up with this activity. This reminds me of all the excitement surrounding video conferencing years back. There have been initiatives to create a gateway or portal of people that want to interact via this technology. To make this happen would require a similar type initiative to make it sustainable I suppose.

I think you are right though, it would be better in small groups as one to one may not lend itself to enough veterans able to participate. I will update my entry.
Thank you - stephenroth

This seems to be a great activity!!! - Ashley Romanoski

Synchronicity: asynchronous

I find for middle school students in particular this is a good scafold to help keep them on task.
The essay rubric can also be used in learner to learn activies by not having to reprint during peer edits. Projected it during class can be effective. - stephenroth

Could you explain more regarding, "The essay rubric can also be used in learner to learn activies by not having to reprint during peer edits." ? - Michelle Blunk

If your going to assess the essay, can you project the rubric and have students peer edit other class member essays? They can then add comments, plus gain a deeper understanding of your learner outcomes that can then be incoporated into their own essays. You coudl print the rubrics as well. I was reading this as a hybrid activity in which the actual class would not be virtual at some points. Hope that makes sense. - stephenroth

That makes sense - printing out the rubrics was in the plans....the visual helps the learner - tucsonshell

Laurel,

Which grade level would be doing this project? - kavitasmehta

Kavita,

Most of my lessons are for the 3rd grade level.
