    If you have been considering converting your gas vehicle for an electric and have done a little shopping around on the subject, no doubt you've encounter the terms pot-box, relay and inertia switch. These parts are essential for safety and power over your electric vehicle and the following information will help you better understand all of their functions.

    • A Pot-box or potentiometer box is the device that will physically connect to your accelerator pedal through the accelerator pedal cable. It features a spring-loaded arm that is activated by stepping about the accelerator pedal allowing more or less current through to the motor controller and tells the motor controller just how much capacity to send for the motor for acceleration.
    • A relay is a device which uses a little control voltage for example 12 volts, to control a bigger system voltage including 120 volts. A relay (non solid state) features a magnetic coil that if activated pulls a set of contacts closed and allows current to flow on the larger voltage side of the relay. This makes it easy to have smaller control wires at the key switch to operate the automobile and a safe voltage in the cab from the electric vehicle. Relays would typically be used to control any of the high voltage systems from the vehicle such as the main contactor or heater core.
    • An inertia switch is a security switch built to cut capacity to the vehicle if it is involved in a collision. It's typically mounted close to the front of the vehicle and when impact occurs the shaking of the inertia switch releases a magnetically held set of contacts shutting from the chance to the car. In certain countries it is a requirement of any electric vehicle conversion.
