Konrath was a produced mid-list amazon self publishing author with several titles to his name in addition to a fair amount of success but no Nyc Times best-selling star.
How likely is it that you, a beginner, can duplicate John Locke's and Amanda Hocking's success?

Many aren't going to like this, but the likelihood involving duplicating their success is incredibly slim.

We hear regarding the success stories, we don't hear regarding the (countless) others who sell few copies or none whatsoever.

    Why is actually that?

Because there are pitfalls in self-publishing which Konrath and his writer friends tend to gloss over (inevitably because they were consequently successful and didn't fall in a pitfall themselves).

He's moving in a restricted circle with successful self-published writers and doesn't understand what the world looks like on the exterior - particularly if you will be a newcomer to the world of publishing. And I think that the kind of hype you find with his blog and on many others could be really dangerous and misleading with regard to aspiring writers. It's just the sort of message that may well mislead you into making life decisions that will really hurt you.

    Several Pitfalls in Self-Publishing

You're exclusively by yourself and you need to work as an entrepreneur in all areas of the publishing process with production to marketing. Just the thing that's easy? Getting an ISBN number: it's cheap and anyone can get it for you.

The others is full of dangers:

    1. MS Editing and File The conversion process:

Quite a bit less easy as you may realise. If you've been studying e-books lately, you must have come across scores of formatting errors (an excessive amount space, lack of it etc) and typos in abundance.

So you must find the best writers to assess book composition, language etc including not surprisingly proof-reading. And since it's an e-book, you need people technically able to convert your files inside e-books and upload them on all the major platforms (Kindle, Barnes & Noble, iBookstore, Sony Store etc). There's plenty of suggestions about Internet and you'll see other writers with self-publishing experience all ready to recommend you names. Fine and good, and I'm sure that many of these free-lance people you find available are excellent. The only trouble is you can't be sure... not until you've really tried them, and spent your money on them only to uncover you've wasted both profit and time!

How come? Because free-lance experts come and go; they don't work inside framework of a publisher's organization, with career prospects to appeal to. Those who work within such an institutional framework ought to be good to avoid a slowdown in their career or being dismissed. So when you hire a free-lance expert, you don't have the guarantee of work well-done that normally posseses an editing job done through the staff of a heritage publisher.

When it comes to file conversion, it's even more difficult and at times (judging from the errors in e-books) even legacy publishers manage to run out of capable staff.
