This was more of a problem many years ago, but I can't tell you how often I have seen people pass up with appliances or things because they didn't have enough non-ferrous metals in them. For the love of that is sacred, do yourself a favor and grab whatever is metal! Steel is a peak prices. If you don't collect steel and iron right now, you are a severe fool, and Mr. T takes pity on the soul.
Acceptable, so now that you will have a truck full of crap that the neighbors, businesses, etc have given you, what does one do. If you have been following trick #2, then you definitely know that appliances are heavy and are mostly steel. But you would also know that several scrap metal appliances are extremely easy to take rip open, and you can make a few extra dollars in 5 minutes.
The friendlier you will be to the scrap yard, the friendlier they will be to you. The crew wants to have some donuts, trade jokes, etc. If you don't mind being a kiss-ass, you can easily see yourself making 5% more on every scrap run just in the man at the pounds table tipping things on your side!
If you don't want swat teams charging into your home during the night, scaring your sons or daughters and handcuffing you plus your wife, please, just don't steal metal. It is honestly probably the most idiotic, low, scum-of-the-earth version of thing you could at any time do. So, to save face for any scrapper who ever made a living from dealing scrap metals, please don't end up that guy.
The difference between getting $50 for a load of steel, and $350 to get a load of stainless material, is having a magnet handy. If you don't maintain a magnet on you constantly, you are not yet a true scrapper, IMHO. Sometimes a person will use one when they are clearing out a residence they are getting ready to sell. It's an easy way to take out tons of stuff that can be just thrown into it whenever. Roll off dumpsters are very convenient and many times it's wise to rent one.
1. Roll off dumpsters are helpful when you are cleaning out your car port, during bathroom remodeling, spring and coil cleaning and basement thoroughly clean outs. They are also useful during kitchen remodeling and ridding yourself of roofing debris. If you have your windows replaced they are often a huge help getting rid of scrap metal,. These dumpsters can be installed during renovation of some sort of basement, during deck building to take out debris, etc.
