Cool idea. I use Moodle and encourage students to use Google Docs. If you could add a twitter function where members can opt in for a twitter update to their phone, you might have something competitive. My students rarely use e-mail and rely on texting and social network sites for communication.

They say they would love to get a tweet from me when I assign things, so it would make sense to do the same for student oriented sites like yours.
