  I just shared mpeg streamclip http://www.squared5.com/
  I think it is great and pretty fast. Better than Handbrake.

  Two ways you can use this.
  
  - give students direct access to manage their own conversions (useful if they are learning about codecs)
  
  - script a batch processing interface that automatically converts files dropped into a shared folder

  I use Any Video Converter and it works just fine...
  In my opinion, for schools it's the best and free...
