I think that is a great idea. I'll go add those names to our notes right now.

I found some good information on the locations of the biome and the types of terrain that can be found in the chaparral.

What is the Chaparral Biome? - 0 views

  • Chaparral lies 30-40 degrees above and below the Equator
  • Temperatures reach up to 100° F (38° C) and average 64° F (17° C), bringing fires in the driest months.
  • Over the winter, the temperature averages a balmy 50° F (10° C), and brings 15-25" (38-64 cm) of rain, which allows vegetation other than cactus to flourish.

  • summer it is very hot and dry
  • ...37 more annotations...
  • temperature range is between 30° and 100° F
  • 10-17 inches of rain all year,
  • long period of dryness in the summer
  • most of it comes in the winter
  • only plants with hard leaves can survive
  • Many leaves are also hairy so they can collect the moisture out of the air and use it
  • because of the heat and dryness.
  • many fires
  • Some plants have adapted even to the fires
  • seeds will lie dormant until there is a fire
  • eed casings will crack and the seed will sprout only then
  • exist in a mid-latitude climate
  • lie in a belt of prevailing westerly winds
  • average temperature of the coldest months is 64° F
  • 30° to 50° N and 30° to 40° S latitudes
  • has four seasons.
  • significantly hot and dry summers
  • Fog off the ocean is the only source of moisture during the summer

Does this mean it never rains in the summer???? I'd better check this out!
  • cool and moist winters
  • Spring and fall
  • tropical storms
  • moderate amount of rain and heat
  • vegetation is mostly made up of shrubs
  • Leaves and branches are usually hairy to trap moisture from fog and rain, and to insulate them from the high heat in the summer
  • fauna
  • don't need a lot of water
  • very little precipitation in the Mediterranean chaparral
  • annual precipitation is 10-20 inches
  • average rainfall for the entire winter is 6.8 inches.

Looking at the map, the chaparral biome occupies a very small part of the world. It's actually hard to see on some continents that are mentioned in the text. I wonder just how many interesting plants and animals might live in such a small area.
