The Teacher Challenge is made up of free 30 day professional development challenges where participants are stepped through weekly tasks that increase their skills while working together as part of a global community.

The Challenge is open to anyone who wants to increase their skills - blogs will be used for reflecting your progress while learning and connecting with each other. We've observed success of any use of online technology is strongly related to the teacher's abilities. BuddyPress.org - A WordPress MU Based Social Network Platform - 3 views

  •
BuddyPress is a suite of WordPress plugins and themes, each adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you'd expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact.
BuddyPress is built to bring people together. It works well to enable people with similar interests to connect and communicate. Some of the fantastic uses might be:

    * A campus wide social network for your university, school or college.
    * An internal communication tool for your company.
    * A niche social network for your interest topic.
    * A focused social network for your new product.

Protecting Kids Online - 7 views

This is a link to the site for The Center for Schools and Communities. I am linking this site to our district web site. the video "Protecting Kids Online" has some really good information for parents to be aware of and think about with regard to their child's use of the Internet. In addition, the video has kids sharing real life situations that they found themselves in with regard to the Internet. If you have trouble getting parents to come to you, maybe you would be interested and taking this to the community like we are. We are posting questions that came with the copy of the video. If you would like to see the video user's guide that goes with the video, let me know and I can sent it to you.

Study: Children Who Blog Or Use Facebook Have Higher Literacy Levels - 8 views

  • 57 per cent of those who used text-based web applications such as blogs, said they generally enjoyed writing compared to 40 per cent who did not.
  • Pupils who write online are more likely to write short stories, letters, song lyrics or a diary, the research revealed.
  • Even social websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo are causing alarming changes in the brains of young users too, claimed neuroscientist Susan Greenfield. “My fear is that these technologies are infantilising the brain into the state of small children who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment.

Interesting, too, is the fact that the author is just 15 yrs old.

"A research by The National Literacy Trust on 3,001 children from England and Scotland showed that schoolchildren who blog or own social networking profiles on Facebook have higher literacy levels and greater confidence in writing."
